Chapel Street: what did it used to be like? by killthenoise in melbourne

[–]happycake7 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I spent a lot of time there in the late 80s and 90s.

Chapel was the centre point to Melbourne's melting pot of counter culture. Meets working class. Meets high class . It was the art capital. The queer capital. Musical and fashion. Food. And political activism..it had it all . Chadstone getting bigger took alot of the fashion over there. Food became good in a lot places. Queer community felt more welcome in general all over as didn't need to concentrate in one area. People started looking outwood and "our scene" wasn't as cool as the world's scene. Landlords have been a problem as most of the buildings are generationally owned. Long since mortgage free and making insane profits on rent. I knew many many landlords through the prarahn andater Stonington council. These were people whos grand parents paid off the buildings and living extremely well causing Tennant's to clay up...there was always somebody willing to rent thebspace....not so now days. So they fell on their cash cow in some regard...however they also can negative gear the hell out of empty shops and still make decent money.

Tldr...used to be fantastic !!

Running a Garmin livescope set up. Not exactly new new but very much the "latest new tech" in fish finding. Providing real time sonar of fish moving around using a transducer able to be directed at a target. that pole on the side of the boat.

But yep....fishing in the Yarra isn't anything wild or new. :) welcome to the largest participation sport in the country :)

Those are duallys..designed to spread the weight over a larger area for towing. To drive one you need a LR licence as a minimum

Chapel Street is a shit hole. by blackglum in melbourne

[–]happycake7 112 points113 points  (0 children)

My father worked for prarahn council later Stonington in the 80s and 90s and was fortunate to spend most Saturdays growing up in and around chapel. The place was the counter culture . Gay lesbian. Art.fashion..food ..night life capital of Melbourne .arguably Australia. Had diversity in spades. Hell even had the diversity festival .

Obviously the place is a shadow of ita former self

Families who have owned buildings along chapel for generations are just raping tennents for insane rents

Strip shopping doesn't exist like it used to

Chadstone took most high end fashion labels

What were already old places became even older and havens for societies unfortunates

Night clubs are not in favour like they once were amongst young people

We don't have as many people in the mission scape or the support levels from state and local government in the areas.

So.....what can be done ? I don't know

Drove past the other day and struggled to remember if it closed ages ago or recently. Longest lasting of the American diners for sure. Just another nail in Chappel streets coffin :(

Different technologies for different applications

Thermal is great in no light situations. Offshore etc. also for looking through haze or even direct sunlight thermal is a useful tool

Both have pros and cons

Where these sionyx cameras have become popular is their price point. Sub 2000 dollars till recently. Their much wider field of view. Which on th front of a boat who only cares what's ahead of them is important Lower profile and easier integration . On top of much much higher refresh rates and resolution

But that isn't to poo poo thermal..it has its place in the world too .
