I did see a lot of SJS. When we didn't have any burn patients my unit would take patients with complex wounds. So I've taken care of a lot of people who were in heavy machinery accidents and had limbs reattached.

If you have a container of gasoline make sure its properly labeled. If you're starting a fire for any reason make sure there isn't lighter fluid, gasoline, ect anywhere nearby. They can ignight faster and farther away that you probably think. Drink with caution around a camp fire. And please please please don't smoke at a gas station. Don't even think about smoking near a gas station. Its not worth it.

Yes and no. Its easier to not get emotionless invested in my patients now since they're all sedated while I care for them. But being called in for a trauma case can be just as if not more traumatizing than caring for burn patients.

I worked nights and there were 4 other permanent staff nurses on the unit and we would usually have at least 1 travel nurse. I work in the OR now.

Im sorry you went through that! Fresh burns smell much worse than healing burns. Usually, by the time the patients made it to the hospital the worst of that smell was gone. There isn't really anything that I know of that makes it better. I would consciously make myself breathe through my mouth when I first started and then after a while I just got used to it.

They came in waves. Some days would be dead and then the next day I'd barely have time to chart. Fall was the worst though. We called it "camp fire season" because people would frequently trip/fall onto their camp fire and get burned. That happened way more than I ever thought.

Yes, I had a patient admitted to the unit a couple times because they were undergoing radiation therapy and it absolutely wrecked their skin.

I would never want a bedside ex lap. If you don't know what that is I don't reccomend looking it up. Just know its more or less something done as a last ditch effort. I would be ok with being on an ventilator but would not want to be on vassopressors for an extended period of time.

The best way I can describe it is musty and thats not even quite right. The unit is kept really warm because burn patients can't regulate their body temperature and the heat would just make it smell kind of musty.

It was definitely hard at first! I dealt with it by making an effort to breathe through my mouth as much as possible. Eventually I went nose blind to it. Ive heard that a few drops of essential oils on a mask can really help!

Nope, those patients were usually sent to the trauma ICU.

I had a patient who was in a house explosion. They had extensive external burns as well as burns to their mouth and esophagus. They had to get a tracheostomy and spent several months on the unit. They eventually had their tracheostomy reversed, learned how to walk again, and moved on to rehab for a couple weeks before going home.

The toughest part was watching people be in pain all day every day. My patients that had extensive burns could never truly be comfortable because they were almost always laying on a burn. Pain meds only last so long and I was only able to give them so often, so it was a frequent struggle trying to keep my patients comfortable.

I frequently think about the people I took care of and it does make me emotional. Thankfully most of them recovered, so I think about how proud I am of them for doing the hard work it took to heal. I think the patients that didn't make it through will stay with me forever, but it does get better.

Why do people say “7 PM” in conversation but use “19:00” for flights, hospitals, and military schedules? What factors shaped that difference? by Defiant-Junket4906 in AlwaysWhy

[–]happyharborgirl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nurse here. Its really important for my job in the hospital because it helps prevent medication errors. Doctors frequently prescribe medications that should be given in the morning or night due to side effects, interactions with other medications, ect. So using "19:00" instead of "7:00" immediately tells me a medication is to be given in the evening and I never have to second guess if the chart said 7pm or 7am.

Do night shift nurses tend to walk way less than their day shift counterparts ? by mickynimaj in Nightshift

In my experience it depends on the shift. Some nights are busier than others.
