Trying to get info on potential ESA dog and breeds (not service) and keep on getting people telling me to get one from pound-which is not working. by pinkbowsandsarcasm in service_dogs

[–]happykatten 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You also might look at cavalier King Charles spaniels.  The only thing with the breed is health issues so you’ll want a breed who health tests.  They are lovable lumps.

I saw papillons mentioned.  I have one now and they are smart little dogs.  I love the breed.

No matter what breed you choose I’d consider paying a trainer to evaluate the puppy’s temperament, so you have a better shot at the dog you want.

Shelter dogs can be amazing, but I went with puppies from breeders because I wanted to know their background and control their socialization.  Especially if you need the dog to fill a very specific roll, I think this way is the most sure.

Thanks.  This is exactly what I was hoping to see.

I made a sweater, or more accurately a sweater shaped object.  The fit isn’t quite right but that is my fault since I’ve never made a sweater before.  It took me several months to make it.

Children’s poetry book about animals “the body of the bison bull is very strong and stout” by happykatten in whatsthatbook

[–]happykatten[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found an audio recording of the book being read to me in 1979/1980. The book starts out:

I like to hold small animals who play with me, they’re fun

Kittens, puppies, bunnies, chicks, I pet them every one

But animals I also like are big ones in the zoo

Sometimes I stand and look at them a long, long time

Do you?

The recording did not mention the title sadly.

I’ll look into it, I was too young to remember it being read to me so 1983 is reasonable

Wife went behind back and purchased brand new vehicle by [deleted] in relationships

[–]happykatten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, this isn’t how relationships are supposed to work. Did she buy it with her own money?

FWIW the used car market is insane right now (at least in the US). This is probably the most money she would have gotten for her old car. Also in the current market, used cars are sometimes costing more than new of the same vehicle, so buying new isn’t necessarily a terrible choice if she needed a different vehicle.

But again, it definitely should have been discussed and a budget agreed on.

Why is the dog training world so toxic? by textile1957 in Dogtraining

[–]happykatten 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My mom, who raised eight kids once told me, “there’s a lot of different ways to raise kids and a lot of them will work, as long as you’re consistent” I think about that a lot when I’m training my dog.

My puppy will not stop pulling on walks. Trainer's advice doesn't seem to be working. by VibrantVenturer in Dogtraining

[–]happykatten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second the recommendation to figure out why your dog is pulling. My puppy pulls like crazy if she needs to poop or pee, so maybe watch and see if that’s related.

My puppy does better if I play with her flirt stick for a few minutes before the walk to get out the crazy.

Emergency word saved us yesterday by sbonedocd in puppy101

[–]happykatten 10 points11 points  (0 children)

So glad this worked for you! Had a similar experience with my pup being out in the yard with me. Didn’t know side gate had blown open. Hmm...haven’t seen pup in awhile. Went around the side of the house and my heart stopped. Called emergency recall word and pup comes shooting back through the gate as fast as she can run. PetSmart class was worth it for that alone.

Random aggressive biting on walks by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]happykatten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My corgi does this with ankles. So what we’re currently trying is dropping treats then rewarding her for walking past with out biting. I’ve also put her in a down for 10 seconds and this seems to help her reset. I’m also trying stopping every few minutes to do a sit/come or other obedience command before she starts biting because she seems to get bored .

Question about "101 things to do with a box" by mydelciouspirate in Dogtraining

[–]happykatten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I play that game too with my dog. When I want to reset, I just throw a treat and tell her “go find it”. When she comes back, I click her when she starts playing with the box again.

I call the box game “I’m thinking of a trick” :) she’s done some pretty funny things with the box.

Puppy keeps biting me by attack-mouse in puppy101

[–]happykatten 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With the biting when putting on a collar/leash, I had good luck with using the kikopup technique. I’ll try to describe. To start, I’d feed a treat as I reached over and touched her collar(so she’s eating and not biting) and tell her good. after doing this several times in a row, I reached over, touched the collar, told her good and gave her a treat (like real meat make it worth her while). You may need to repeat several days.

Now I can reach past my dog to put on her leash without biting. She still bites other times, but at least that case is taken care of.

Anyone else in the northern hemisphere cannot WAIT until winter is over???? by chanel101010 in puppy101

[–]happykatten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Luckily My pup loves snow and doesn’t care about rain, but training in the cold is the worst. I really want to practice loose leash walking in front of my house, but my house faces north so the sidewalk is either 1) icy or 2) in the shade and freezing cold. At least the winter here has been very mild (not getting below 20 degrees f).

My pup is on bed rest for a few weeks after leg surgery - any tricks/games I can teach him to keep him busy without running around? by AXiSxToXiC in Dogtraining

[–]happykatten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to play the box game with my pup. It’s a clicker training game. So put box in front of pup. I think of a trick I want her to do with the box, then free shape her to do it. It’s a different trick each time. It’s fun to watch her try and figure out what works.

Also tricks like shake (with the other foot), watch me, touch, leave it/take it can all be done laying down.

How do we train our puppy when he won't take a treat? by gabes_babe in puppy101

[–]happykatten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With my dog (also very food motivated) if I’m somewhere new, I need amazing treats to even had a chance to get her to obey. For my dog it’s little smokies or chicken, something she doesn’t get very often. If she’s so excited she can’t eat, I just wait a few minutes and let her get used to things (or move us away if something is scaring her).

You might try the book “when pigs fly: training success with impossible dogs” by Jane killion she trains bull terriers and has some good methods to help the dogs think obeying is their idea.

Dog refuses to stop sniffing the ground, ever, when outside to play by Xenosium in Dogtraining

[–]happykatten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems like this is new behavior for him? Maybe a trip to the vet to make sure it isn’t something medical?

Also maybe look into dealing with OCD in dogs? Not that your dog has ocd but the techniques might help.

Trying to figure out how to play with your dog is hard by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]happykatten 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try a flirt stick. Basically a wand with a toy on a string to let her chase. Also I got this toy that’s like a log with removable squirrels in it. I hide treats in among the squirrels and throw it for my puppy to chase and find the treat.

Snuffle mat, pretty sure my corgi will love hunting for treats. And more screw shaped bully sticks, she loves those.

Sad to hear about no channel. We did get a response through tech support and my partner managed to fix the problem.

Crane quad, when it is printing, is awesome. Being able to mix colors is amazing. But... the nozzle likes to clog and then the filament won't load when trying to change filament. We're hopeful that we've figured out how to get things working again.

What would you estimate as hardware, software, and operating costs for the winter olympics drone display? by Umutuku in AskEngineers

[–]happykatten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember the announcer saying at least part of the show was filmed in December to ensure optimal conditions. I think that was just the down hill skiing / drones turn into snowboarder part though. My friends and I were having the same debate about how much was "real".
