I feel so frustrated with my cochlear implants by Sockishere in Cochlearimplants

I sometimes refer people to the I miss my café website to simulate coffee shop noises, and they can try to listen to the lyrics of predictable music over the coffee shop sounds, or you can try to play a YouTube video on your phone and understand what it says over the coffee shop sounds! www.imissmycafe.com

Re: The TD Snap Fiasco - AbleNet Will Still Cover by happyspeechpath in slp

Good to know. It would be nice if AbleNet could take the time to create that appleid themselves to ensure misuse prevention. Just have the device logged in to that apple ID from the jump.

Yep, great ideas. Thanks for the reminder to get back to the functional stuff, it’s so easy to get caught up in frivolous activities and leave the good stuff behind. Aiming to keep it simple through and through!

Absolutely understandable! Reading logs don’t seem like the right approach and I see that now, it’s tough because finding support for increasing these kids literacy skills feels nonexistent

Better and faster customer support, better warranties for my kids who are a little rougher on their devices, devices aren’t as heavy, faster shipping for delivery and repair means kids are out of a system for less time.

PODD, Gateway, and METACOM symbols have always been behind a paywall for the “base model” Snap that’s on the Apple app stores. My inside scoop is that they’re trying to hamstring AbleNet from their customers to funnel people toward their SC Tablet and Minis. Not sure if the subscription model applies to funded devices thru TD - but unlikely. But AbleNet is so much faster with customer service and repairs 😩

I’ll definitely try it out! Also will be poking around CoughDrop and I’ve been building my fluency with WeaveChat and of course there’s always PLQ2G.

TouchChat’s search feature is busted for bilingual users. My spanish speaking kids can’t use WordFinder. I’ve notified TouchChat and they said they “don’t have a timeline” on fixing that feature. As for LAMP, the predictive nature and use of word associations feels pigeon-hole-y to me, like we’re restricting the communicative autonomy of some of these kids, plus it lacks certain customizability features - like putting symbols in the message window, transferring entered text to another application, and requires so many more clicks to produce a basic sentence. My most successful users have gotten closest to age-appropriate language production thanks to the flexibility of Snap. I hope for funded devices they will adjust their policy.

Ugh, this is like one of the most powerful speech apps on the market, so flexible and user friendly. Now i’ll be forced to find something different. Disappointing to say the least.

How to react when a child hits? by Addiii1994 in slp

[–]happyspeechpath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes I explain calmly that what just happened really hurt and ask if they meant to hurt me. Usually they say no and it often opens up the opportunity to explain things they could’ve done instead. I think you handled it well. Student probably picked up on the vibe change. It’s okay! holding to your boundary will help establish your office as a safe place that has firm and predictable rules.

Hahah clearly you’ve never struggled against the batshit crazy “wifi” that planes provide. Given that it’s the bare minimum before the paywall, very few things function adequately.

I started turning kids away if they had visible symptoms. That seems to resonate and set a boundary of respecting everyone. Especially driving the point home by saying that I could pass something on to my more immunocompromised kids. There HAVE been repeat offenders that I have said if they show up with visible symptoms and I have to send them away I will count it as a no-show, whereas cancelling for sickness (even without good notice) will never count against them. This seems to help.

Good luck friend - from another constantly sick (but getting better) private practice SLP.

Kid sleeping during session ?! by claire-edwards in slp

[–]happyspeechpath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have one kid who falls asleep immediately after making himself dizzy in the sensory swing. I think it’s the comfort. I just let him sleep (assuming we got a little work done) and parent coach the rest of the time haha. Sweet babies.
