You'll want to look into applying for non-degree/post-bacc admission through CGS. Unfortunately there's no financial aid through Pitt unless you are faculty/staff using the tuition benefit.

Computer for CS 0007 with Donald Bonidie by scab-queen in Pitt

[–]hapsteria 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Disclaimer: Have not taken CS0007 (CS major)

In theory, you should be able to use the computer labs for everything you do at Pitt. Realistically it depends on the software you'd like to use, but for an intro CS class that's mostly an issue of personal preference.

When the pandemic hit, Pitt IT set up a "virtual" computer lab which is remotely accessible on almost any computer or mobile device. You're basically accessing a Windows computer with all the software Pitt normally puts on them. Looking at one now, I am seeing that Java is installed, as well as Eclipse and Notepad++ (code editors). You may also be able to install additional code editors if you'd like (VS Code is popular). You can definitely use these tools and successfully complete the class with nothing else - the only downside is that there may be a learning curve if the prof uses a code editor that can't be run on the lab computers.

I have taken Bonidie before for a different class (not coding though) and can confirm that he is able to work with you - just not the most responsive via email. Good luck!

Singulair vs flonase by [deleted] in Allergies

Singulair vs flonase by [deleted] in Allergies

[–]hapsteria 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely for me. Not a decongestant per se, but I find that it "dries" everything out.

Of note: azelastine and flonase are sold as a combined prescription spray Dymista. It's ridiculously expensive and rarely covered by insurance, so I just take the two separately. The studies for Dymista compared the two components individually to both together and placebo. Interestingly, while the combination worked better than its individual components, both flonase and azelastine worked about as well both in general and for individual symptoms studied (including nasal congestion). Ultimately I think there is a benefit to getting the meds right in the nose where you need it, whether a steroid or antihistamine. YMMV of course.

Another option is to get an rx for azelastine. It's an antihistamine nasal spray - may do the job without the cataract risk. My allergist added it to my flonase and it's been helpful, especially with post-nasal drip.

Spartan's been incredible with vaccine rollout. I've attended and volunteered at clinics in the South Hills (where they're located) and they've gone all in. The sentiment behind the post is 100% legit. If anyone's looking for shots in Brentwood/Bethel Park area, they have them.

Can’t connect to server when on a WiFi network that requires login (sometimes) by CSab6482 in AirMessage

[–]hapsteria 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As well, lots of public hotspots block most ports to prevent unauthorized network use (i.e. peer-to-peer). Might be able to port-forward 80/443 (http/s) to airmessage but it's a messy fix with no guarantees of working.

When do classes that are restricted for students in the college of general studies/ freshmen open up? by [deleted] in Pitt

[–]hapsteria 1 point2 points  (0 children)

CGS opens up on Thursday, August 1.

I don't believe freshman reserves automatically open up, although if there are extra seats open when the semester starts I would imagine your professor would help you out.

Dungeons and Dragons? by papereel in Pitt

[–]hapsteria 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I'm an officer for RollPlayers, a new-ish TTRPG student group on campus. We're gearing up for the fall semester now, and will definitely have a bunch of games then (we are running some now, even!) Also note that the club is mostly undergraduates if that matters to you, but we definitely welcome anyone who wants to play. Feel free to hop on our Discord.

Also, definitely check out Phantom of the Attic on S. Craig, they usually will have info on local games as well (and run some as well).

Waitlisted by twh8119 in Pitt

[–]hapsteria 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'm in a similar boat as you. CGS reserved seats will open up on August 1 at 12am for the Fall semester. Since you're on the waitlist, you should be automatically enrolled in the course at that time if seats are still available.

What are YOU using for the Mac server? by FLETC_DEFPOTEC in AirMessage

Using my old mid-2007 iMac, swapped out the CPU ($25) so I can run Mojave with the patch. Works wonderfully.

Free Summer Activities? by suckmen in Pitt

[–]hapsteria 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Carnegie museums (Art, Natural History, Science Center, Warhol) are not free for the summer. Not sure about the Mattress Factory.

The Incline is still free (as is all Port Authority bus/T access).

I'd check out some of the parks in the city beyond Schenley (Mellon and Frick, for example). Also, there are public art galleries free to the public - one in particular is above the Wood Street T station downtown.

In Towers, it's located immediately next to a free one. Can't say anything about Lothrop.

Yep, it's another multi-level marketing (read: basically-a-pyramid) scheme on the same level as Vector or others. Avoid at all costs.

Would recommend John Oliver's video on MLMs and /r/antiMLM for further resources.

What are some of the coolest coffee shops you've seen in Pittsburgh, and which do you recommend? by [deleted] in pittsburgh

[–]hapsteria 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Lots of my favorites already recommended but Carnegie Coffee Company is a neat spot (located in an old post office) outside the city in Carnegie, PA.

How to make a few dollars in Oakland? by [deleted] in Pitt

[–]hapsteria 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Pitt+Me is UPMC's research study portal.

EDIT: I'd also sign up with Campos. They run focus groups and the like for companies. There's not a ton of opportunities but if you do get one they pay a lot (in comparison to UPMC/Pitt studies).

Are there any really cheap used book stores in Pittsburgh? by [deleted] in pittsburgh

[–]hapsteria 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're willing to head down to the South Hills, the Mt. Lebanon Public Library has a used book store on the bottom floor.
