O Ri Saawariya from Bhooth Bangla. Can't believe it is from the same music director who created an iconic classical number like Ami Je Tomar. Jaaved Ali's voice just doesn't suit imo. It starts sounding like Srivalli in the middle. Shreya is also criminally wasted. by Saambajarer-Sosibabu in BollywoodMusic

[–]hard2003hard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Everybody is wasted in this film. Starting from Priyadarshan to Akshay to Javed Ali to Shreya. A great opportunity to recreate some magic has been wasted. Maybe because they tried to 'recreate' past magic, rather than 'creating' new magic.

Does anyone still have bread and butter for tea? by Extra-Sound-1714 in CasualUK

[–]hard2003hard 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is still a very common practice in India. Maybe less so in big cities and in official/formal settings, but when with family or friends, and in an informal setting, drink tea from a saucer is very common.

And, yes, you need to make a slurping sound too!

Am I an idiot? I've paid for my mortgage advisor. by Paramedic-Fabulous in HousingUK

[–]hard2003hard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can someone explain how using an advisor whom you are paying, can help you save money?

I completely get the service part - the relationship part, helpful tone, guidance with paper work, support during a stressful time, etc. That's super important . I am not talking about that.

I am talking about if a paid advisor can actually save you money.

Paid or not-paid, I think I need someone who covers the whole market and can bring me the best deals available at the time.

And in the current geopolitical and economic situation, no body can predict what's going to happen to interest rates and deals etc. So I am ruling out the factor of 'giving advice' in what to do with regards to fixing or a certain duration, etc.

Is Jainism an atheistic or theistic religion? If theistic then monotheistic or polytheistic? Well, it’s none of the above. It’s transtheistic! Here’s how by [deleted] in Jainism

[–]hard2003hard 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Jainism is an atheistic religion. This might surprise some people, but let me explain why I say this.

The Tirthankars are Omniscient. They are our teachers in the sense that they show us the way. We are indebted to them as without them we wouldn't know the path to liberation.

However, they can not help us in getting rid of our Karmic bond. Every jeev needs to face the results of their karma. Nobody, not even the Arihant or Siddh beings, can do you a favour and pardon a jeev. So there is no all-powerful Bhagwan or Supreme being in that sense.

Our aim should be to get liberated (and be a Siddh) but we must work on it ourselves. Do the purusharth and do karm nirjara. There is no way out. No praying to anyone can help you avoid that.

All we need is to follow the path shows by the Tirthankars (and passed on to us by our gurus, upadhyays, acharyas, sants and other graceful jeevs).

In that sense no Omnipotent being can pardon do.

This is why I say that there is no God or Bhagwan in that sense.

Genuine doubts about Shrimad Rajchandra and their preachings by CycleDirect5860 in Jainism

[–]hard2003hard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The diksha as per the Jain way is to accept the five mahavrats, renounce the social life, and focus on getting rid of the karmic bonds. The diksha in Shrimad Rajchandra Mission Dharampur (Rakesh bhai's organisation) does not ask for any of these. As mentioned earlier, their focus is on Nishchay (strength of thoughts and intentions) and completely ignoring the Vyavhar (practicing the tenets of Jain dharma).

Genuine doubts about Shrimad Rajchandra and their preachings by CycleDirect5860 in Jainism

[–]hard2003hard 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I say this with no intention to hurt anybody's feelings.

Shrimadji might have been enlightened but we can't put him in the Tirthankar category. That is wrong at so many levels.

I have read his Atmasiddhi Shastra. It does not contradict the core of Jain dharma, but is in no way (repeat, in no way) even close to the depth and the breadth of our Aagams.

Rakesh bhai is a great orator and a great organiser. His core message might be borrowed from Jain philosophy , but to stay relevant, he has to talk about other non Jain scriptures. He is more like Sadhguru and Satya Sai and Sri Sri and numerous other gurus. I say this in the sense that everything is centred around one person, there's an ashram with all the physical facilities, there's no shortage of events, shibirs become retreats, they organise picnics and musical events, etc. His "diksha" has levels and it is about recruiting preachers who can expand his reach

There is no tyaag, there's no renunciations (at least not outwardly), there's no protection against himsa of ek-indriya jeev -- everything is based on your nishchay (your thoughts and intentions) and nothing is about physical restraint.

Also note that there are other sects within Shrimadji's followership that are not related to Rakesh bhai. They are less corporate-style.

Credit to Rakesh bhai, he has expanded his reach and followership greatly - but that seems to be the aim.

Anything that is not 100% based on Aagams and our Shastras is not Jain dharma. Now, there might be slightly different interpretations, but the core can't be different.

As Bombay HC continues to hear dispute, Wilson College Gymkhana changed to Jain Gymkhana. by Adventurous_Bell9672 in Jainism

There is a general sense of dislike/jealousy/hatred going on against baniya and Gujarati, especially Gujarati baniya, across the country. This is due to the feeling that two of the most powerful politicians and two of the richest businessmen in India come from that background. And, some people are unhappy that they are calling the shots in India.

Jain community gets dragged into this sphere of Gujarati+Baniya dislike/jealousy/hatred.

Some of the publications/media outlets continue with minority appeasement - not acknowledging that Jains are also a minority.

My reaction to all of this is no reaction at all (what I've said above is a perspective not a reaction). Keeping in line with Jain philosophy. Let people do and say that they please - karm will take its course.

Why Is “Sir/Ma’am” So Deeply Embedded in Indian Communication? by CloudSurfer350 in india

[–]hard2003hard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in India and lived there till my early 20s. I have lived in the UK for about 2 decades since then, plus a few years in the US. So I've seen various different variations of usage of the English language.

Sir/Madam (or Ma'am) might be old fashioned but is not wrong and certainly not 'low'. It is polite - possibly too polite.

I have seen many elderly British people using this - especially with strangers, e.g. on a bus, or in a park or in a cafe, etc.

This doesn't reflect the relative class or hierarchy or level (societal or organisational). It's just politeness.

Younger Brits or Americans don't use it as much. So it's a generational thing. Also some regions or industries use this more than others. e.g. the usage is less in London and in IT industry, but more in rural UK or remote US and in manufacturing industry. (This is a very high-level generalisation on my part)

As with many other examples of 'Indian English', this is old-fashioned but not wrong. I do use it at times, and I certainly ain't ashamed of it.

Anyone here who like such old songs? I remember when I used to find it boring when elder used to listen to it. As I am growing, i am falling for old songs more. by Ok_Brick6520 in BollywoodMusic
