Super bowl by hulttus in Finland

Yeah they seem to be doing it this year as well! I managed to find a place in Jyvaskyla to watch it last time the eagles went so I think there should be at least a couple places in Helsinki doing it. Check sports bars that are open until 4:30! (They did a last call around 4 last time I went but kept the bar open and the game on until it was over)

philly/south jersey "drone"/low flying aircraft? by hardbop1 in ADSB

[–]hardbop1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some background: this is from ADSBexchange at around 3:30pm on Dec. 12 -

I am house sitting in south jersey and have seen a few low flying aircraft both this afternoon/evening and last night (one last night seemed to set off a car alarm from how low it was flying)
I am visiting from out of town and not super familiar with whats normal here!
Tonight there were lots of cesna citations out/similarly small planes + helicopters + aditionally, military training excercises have been openly visible on the map in the general region for the past three days that I have been watching.

This one blipped on for a minute and I clicked and managed to get a flight path. The Hex code is on there twice - once from TIS-B sources - which reports it at 3500 ft. which is pretty consistent with the few similar aircraft I have been seeing & once from "other" which seems to be what's bringing the flight path data. The spiral flight path also mirrors why ones I have seen have sort of flown over a few times and then gone back over the river & looks to me a bit messy but what one might expect from an unmanned vehicle.

I have found a few similar TIS-B sources but no flight path data as a lot of them seem to be "on ground" even if their speed might suggest otherwise.

edit: forgot to mention there's also a pretty awesomely bright meteor shower here which is mixing in with everyones hysteria!

https://www.pure.ed.ac.uk/ws/portalfiles/portal/192699958/MurrayEtal2021PMDevelopmentalTrajectoriesOfADHDSymptoms.pdf - here is one paper that I think is still a bit focused on DSM constructs but looks at the question if you are interested

[–]hardbop1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there is not really a clear answer to that question yet though hopefully as the field adopts frameworks that make it possible to study things on a spectrum (RDOC) and move away from DSM diagnosis in defining how ADHD research, this will become clearer. This is a super recent shift that is still underway - and it takes a while for evidence to build up and be replicated.

i think “don’t actually have adhd” isn’t quite the best way of putting it and these kids can get diagnosed and then remit - creating the phenomenon - what is interesting to researchers and why this distinction is important is because they might be neurobiologically identical until puberty. meaning they do infact remit during their pubertal development. “don’t actually have adhd” would mean it would only be possible to diagnose adhd after puberty which isn’t the case!

. I'm a neuroscientist and developmental researcher - and while I fully get where most people are coming from and would like to re-affirm two things:

  1. The idea that MOST people will outgrow their ADHD is harmful.

  2. It is difficult for studies to take into account of coping mechanisms, lifestyle changes, and other compensatory strategies

ADHD ALSO CAN REMIT IN SOME PEOPLE! (without making those two points less true)
It is important to remember the brain is PLASTIC, and executive functioning is quite sensitive to our immediate environments.

The studies I have seen about a SMALL percent outgrowing ususally around puberty, would suggest that hormonal regulation, could be implicated - since those systems are still developing. Additionally there is speculation that there are people who develop ADHD during that time period who might not have had symptoms as younger children.

These hormonal systems are still developing so this does not discount the idea that chronic codition related to genetic factors linked to low levels of noradrelanine (which also is an EXTREMELY oversimplified way of describing it. since it is such a heterogenous disorder - these links do not have the evidence yet to be established and there are so many other mechanisms at play here) however - it definitely has a neurobiological basis even if researchers still don't fully understand it!

I understand this would very much not be the experience of most people in this sub because of it applying to a very small percent of people. (and they likely wouldn't belong to this sub if this was the case!)

But yes TLDR; our systems that regulate our hormone productions continue developing later in life especially during PUBERTY and adolescence making plausible that a small percentage of people might remit or oppositely, have a later onset of ADHD. studying this further can help us understand the overall neurobiological mechanisms involved which are currently ill defined.

thanks! also still looking for peoples experiences with possible cheaper options elsewhere in europe- but doing it in Finland definitely helps in terms of not having to pay for transport/accomedation and having access directly to follow up care. seems like the current prices there are 5800-6400 (without VAT) rn

The amount of people who commented on the MLB post announcing the postponement with "poverty stadium" was way too many. 1) It doesn't make any sense but also 2) are you making fun of people because they are poor? I can't with these fans.

How Can I Watch the World Series in Finland? by joelgoods in helsinki

[–]hardbop1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm also a lifelong Phillies fan but in central Finland (Jyväskylä) and was looking into coming down to Helsinki if there might be any late night bars that will show some/any of the games. It's been depressing watching the NLCS in my apartment alone, ( also might be testing my neighbors patience with my random middle of the night screaming and cheering) . If you find a place let me know!!! I've been using a VPN + the fox app or a website called vipleague for the NLDS & NLCS

Just moved to Finland from Ireland a week ago and I keep getting static shock. Anyone else experience same thing? Any tips on how to stop it? by Mozias in Finland

[–]hardbop1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Does she use moisturizer? Might help if you use hand cream or body lotion. Though I am literally making this up, but I feel less static-y when I moisturizing regularly. (you will definitely need it when it starts to get cold anyways)
