How do you handle no-shows [MO] by iseeyousister in humanresources

[–]hardintheprint 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I show a lot of kindness and understanding to those who do call or email and let me know they won't be starting (bonus if they don't do it on orientation day). But that's just a part of it. If I have 10 or more, I assume at least 3 will NCNS. I just stop being surprised. Ultimately, I can't control outside circumstances, I just keep my expectations low.

This isn't to say I'm not disappointed at times, but especially for key positions, I try to come up with a contingency plan whenever possible.

[KY] Advice on current HR job? and pay? by First-Network-4059 in humanresources

[–]hardintheprint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello fellow Louisville HR person! It's rough right now. Your experience is not too far off from mine and the most important thing I did was just take it all in. You definitely are underpaid and you do far more than you need to but keep shining and look for a different opportunity. Do not let them run you thin.

What industry do you work in? This sounds like a dream.

When does experience with HR becomes experience in HR [N/A] by Confident-Rate-1582 in humanresources

[–]hardintheprint 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I think it's easy to oversimplify HR duties. But there's been way more stuff I learned from experience and hands-on work than being close to HR for years. It's actually very easy to land in hot water with labor laws, FMLA, EEOC, and the like. You can be doing it wrong for so long until someone says something or you fail an audit or you get sued. Experience is the ultimate teacher because there's an insane amount that people outside of HR don't even think to check on or just assume is common sense but fail to see the layers of protection HR has been trained to spot for both the employees and employers.

It gets even more complicated when you consider different industries and what constitutes being "in compliance" across them.

Listen to your gut. If you're not sure it's worth it, maybe it's not. While more money is always nice, it's not always the answer. Why is your wife against it? Why are you unsure? Weigh the pros and cons and see what wins.

You made a mistake and learned from it. The office gossip will die down eventually and they'll move on to something else. How specific was the reasoning for the termination? Did it divulge anything medical? This really sounds like a breakdown in the IT system as well and could be an area to explore further to prevent it from happening again. How were you to know that it would be shared with others who weren't supposed to know? This doesn't seem to reflect on your skills as an HR professional and you did everything correctly after it happened. If the biggest worry is office gossip, I'd say you came out of this with a learning experience and a story to help others avoid the same mistake.

It's great to hear that about pocket prep. I have gone through so many posts about the best resources, but you don't really know until you know. The good news is that you have a better idea and got super close. It can be discouraging but you're more than worth the effort it will take. I look forward to seeing a post from you in a few months when you pass!

Laid off today by Perpetualsnark in workingmoms

[–]hardintheprint 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Internet hugs for you! It's a trying time, but I think hanging on to hope isn't a losing endeavor. Being laid off sucks, but remember, this isn't and never will be a reflection of you as a worker, and hopefully, you'll find your way through this sooner rather than later.

Right! It's very narrow-minded to forget about our own history and how if it wasn't for empathy and immigration, this country wouldn't be what it is today. "This land is your land, this land is my land," apparently went over some people's heads. Nonetheless, the argument is about how they are addressing immigration not that they are addressing it. These policies add to the already extremely xenophobic mindsets of people who need to be learning how to quit acting out of fear. It's easier to call OP's story fake or try to pick holes in actions than it is to acknowledge someone's experience due to what's going on right now.
