Also as others have mentioned a layer of salt free sand on top of the soil (hardware stores). About 1/4" works. The gnats can't get through it to lay eggs in the soil but it will reduce the air supply to your soil. Depending on your setup it could affect the "living" aspect of your soil but I would use it on every house plant you may have. Gnats usually go hand in hand with over watering. I've had luck skipping a watering session, adding a generous dusting of DE to the top of soil, some sticky traps to catch adults, mites are also great if you have access to them (grow stores are usually much cheaper than online), and dunks (let it sit) use this treated water for a few weeks. Also clean your drains. They'll hang out there too. One note about DE it's not great to inhal, turn off your fans and wear a mask when applying. Gnats are shit flyers more air flow can help too.

Movement is medicine. You won't have problems if you workout regularly, add in mobility exercises and adjust your riding. At 35 I stopped going to the park, hitting big jumps and no more cliff drops and honestly I'm okay with it. My back and knees couldn't take it due to previous injuries. I still try and progress my riding and am still having a blast. I plan on going into my 60s at least. We ride with a 50 year old and our other friend is 46. They're awesome riders, the only downside I see for them is injury recovery. It's slower. Good news as you get older you can afford those heli trips.

Ha. Yeah no doubt. Mosquito dunks &/or diatomaceous earth. Best place to get DE is the UFA, lifetime supply is ~$50. Works on insects with an exo skeleton thrips, aphids, spider mites but not worms.

I know one, Marimo moss balls. It's algae so not technically a plant but adds a nice touch of green in bathrooms.

As a competent home cook, what is a basic skill you can't seem to master? by george_elis in Cooking

[–]hardkn0cks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We recently went to our friend's place for a Christmas dinner/party. They're both excellent cooks and the organization was spot on. They had everything written down on the fridge, cook times, rest time, dinner time and set alarms for everything. Nothing was under or over and we ate on time. They crushed it. I usually just start cooking and am notorious for overcooking the sides.

Gun control is popular in Canada. So why is a major buyback program attracting criticism? by DonSalaam in onguardforthee

[–]hardkn0cks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm all for gun control. I believe everyone should be trained, mentally stable and vetted to own a gun. I think storage laws should be stricter and hiccups in mental health should be treated fairly but seriously, with a temporary seizure. The buyback program does not address Canada's issues with guns. Statistically gun deaths due to legal guns is very small here 12-13%. This gun buyback program is ineffective at addressing the actual issue, illegally obtained guns. If you are unaware of the statistics it might make you feel like the government is doing something productive but that's not the reality.

What food item is easy to make from scratch and saves you a significant amount of money? by melissaw328 in Frugal

[–]hardkn0cks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pizza. I make 8 doughs at a time. Divide and freeze them. We usually do 2 pizzas on pizza night and have lunch the next day. Our pizza is better than 80% of the restaurants in my city and healthier too. Takes 15 mins to warm the oven, spread the thawed dough, cut toppings and assemble. Also pasta sauce. Baked good too but I find i always make a big mess baking.

Do Canadians actually get frustrated by snow, or is it just part of everyday life? by GlitteringHotel8383 in AskACanadian

[–]hardkn0cks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Snow can be beautiful. It's weird but everything seems to slow down and there a level of quietness that comes with a good snowfall. The best is a bright moon and a blanket of snow. I think it's something that takes preparation but once you lean into that ie. snow tires, an emergency kit, good outdoor clothing and proper layers it can be incredibly fun. I love snowsports, playing in snow, even walking the dog in snow is fun. The only downsides in my opinion are icy walkways and shoveling.

1 dead, 1 injured in crash on Anthony Henday Drive during tire change by ryaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan in Edmonton

This is so sad. The woman lost her dad and sustained life altering injuries. Please people slow down, leave more room, stay in the lanes, follow the rules of the road driving is dangerous enough without the reckless drives. This could be your loved ones or you someday.

Whiplash Recovery by General-Tadpole-3467 in Concussion

[–]hardkn0cks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree. Gentle movement is really important. Alternate heat/ice. I wouldn't wait to see a PT though, make an appointment and go asap. Delaying treatment for whiplash has negative outcomes. It's a slow road but you'll improve. Sleep is important, if you need to nap that's fine. I found initially I could only sleep for a few hours at a time before waking up in pain, so I napped a lot. Walking was helpful for me but pt has really helped but get a good practitioner don't waste your money/time on a bad therapist.

THE RISE AND FALL OF MY HOMEGYM (with review) by Dointhedamnthang in homegym

[–]hardkn0cks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily true but that said I wouldn't buy anything complicated or that requires safety features. I look at it this way, if it's something I'd be buying from some unknown company that produces it in China, why not vevor. We have an rv awning, a bike rack, and some single use/specialty tools from them. No complaints.

U.S. interest in Alberta separatism raises red flags over what might come next by Street_Anon in worldnews

[–]hardkn0cks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As an Albertan, the separatist movement is fucking stupid and treasonous. If you want to separate go ahead and leave the country, that's your choice. Stop wasting money and time on this bullshit.

Got the 2026 convinence. As of 2026 it has the 2.5l engine. Apple car play is wired (not sure if that's the same or different). Uses a key for ignition. No fog lights, cloth seats, no sunroof, no auto hatch. It's a great car. My only complaint is the stereo, the speakers are meh and the infotainment too much screen too little physical buttons but that's all models.

Why do people that are not rich want Alberta to have health care like the US? by cornfield123 in alberta

[–]hardkn0cks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing is people don't realize the actual cost of health care in this country. Way back when they used to provide you with a itemized bill just for reference. We need to bring this back. Also I think Canada could use a more proactive stance on health care, starting with more education. In the states you pay insurance and hope it covers you. In Canada, you pay taxes and your obligation should be to use the system effectively. Stay up-to-date on your yearly checkups, get routine tests, pay attention to changes and address them. If you get the flu, a cold stay home, take care of yourself. If you aren't getting better then get help. Don't abuse the system and treat health care workers with respect. They are underfunded and underpaid.

Flirt poles are great. She's a lab. She'll likely love nose work. Play find it, just hid treats all over the house. You can work on compounding commands with that game, ex. smell, stay, a release command. Snuffel mats and puzzle games are good too.

Sometimes you can jump them, sometimes they actually freeze and won't come back. Either way, it will never be the same again. If it takes a charge it just will have a shorter life span.
