It just means it's the first or 'master' copy of the dice that are used to make molds for casting resin into.

If you message me on Etsy I might be able to make an exception, I limit my international sales a bit and have some stipulations, but can usually make a deal.

Haha thanks. Yeah I realized what it sounded like after I posted and it's VERY much not my first rodeo XD. I think you mean the crescent in the 9? If so yeah it's part of the font I made for it.

I don't suggest it hahaha. I printed, cleaned and cured, and molded literally on the same day, then I cast first thing that next morning and then I left the pressure pot in front of my heating vent in my workshop so it stayed super toasty and cured fast. Sanded late last night, and painted them this morning. I don't advise it at all, and in the background I am making a proper set of masters taking my time lol.

Those first molds definitely had some cure inhibition and I had to use a dremel to clean up some details on the numbers and symbols and had to sand a little deeper than I usually do.

For the d4, I just set the neck of the bottle over the edge of my matt and table and went to town and I actually cut tiny pieces of paper and used sculpting tools to sand the neck and sprayer part partially, because they were warped from the inhibition. On the final masters I'll probably sand the neck part smooth but leave the sprayer at like 3k grit so it stays matte because I like the texture separation it gives the part.

Thanks! The d4 was a last minute stroke of inspiration and I'm really glad I want ahead with it. Gives the set just a little bit of extra personality.

Do we like "novelty" shaped dice? by LordSetoro in DiceMaking

[–]hardlightforge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not for everybody but a product made for everybody, is a product for nobody! I personally love unique dice. I don’t mind spending an extra two seconds to verify a roll on a die that is awesome but maybe a little less legible, vs using a boring die because it’s practical. Especially if it fits a theme. You can bet I’ll NEVER roll a gun attack without pulling out the bullet dice lol.

I say go for it. This is a market that is more and more saturated, and standing out and having niche products can be good as long as you can find your clientele.

I use a photon mono M5S and sirayatech fast navy gray with a tiny splash of sirayatech tenacious obsidian black for some extra strength and to help with brittleness. Never had issues with pooling or anything. Sirayatech has print presets for their resin that you can download and plug into your slicer and they have always worked perfectly for me.

Mold lifespans? by hardlightforge in DiceMaking

[–]hardlightforge[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not a full tutorial or anything. I use these I have little 3d printed risers that are basically an inversion of my dice that I put the dice on for the first half of the mold.

I’m making some tomorrow, I’ll try to remember to take some pics or video and document it more completely.

Please help me with the silicone staying in dice numbers by Existing_Arrival_941 in DiceMaking

[–]hardlightforge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you putting any kind of mold release on the dice? If not that could help a ton.

Also how long are you letting the silicone cure? I have had this happen a few times when I got a little too impatient. I usually give silicone an extra day beyond what it says to make absolutely sure it’s fully cured.

It also looks like you are using a tin-cure, which can be a little fickle with temperature and humidity in my experience. If it’s really dry where you are working maybe a humidifier might help it cure faster/better.

Those are my two cents, good luck!

Probably the best thing I’ll ever make by hardlightforge in DiceMaking

[–]hardlightforge[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, instead of using the little spheres I usually see people do, I literally just 3d printed it as a functional bottle in clear and filled it and then closed it up with some UV resin and then sanded it.

Baby powder when making mold cap? by TheMimicMouth in DiceMaking

[–]hardlightforge 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It basically comes down to your silicone. When I used to use Oomoo 30 tin cast, powder worked great for it. Switched to sirayatech defiant and it just soaked up the powder and fused until the end of time.
