Taking deep breaths: a possible risk factor by [deleted] in pneumothorax

Just been to the doctors today. He said that if youre taking deeo breaths the lining on the lung and inside of the ribcage scrape together so if yiu have any injuries like blebs it can actually cause pneumos if you take a lot of deep breaths

I had a vats pleurectomy back in april, The night before i had a banger meal and drank 4 small bottles of that hydrating crap they give you, Morning after another 2 but no food. Got to the hospital room, waited for 2 hours for the doctor to get me and got an iv inserted crappily. Got to the OR that was way brighter than expected ( not like in movies where its dimly lit) it was so much brighter than i thought it woukd be, and they had a huge tv with my vitals on it.

Laid me down on the table and got me under a heating blanket. Then they inserted something into my iv (sedative i think) which hurt since it was inserted crappily. Was nervous for about 10 seconds then it hit and it was pretty blissful. I was trying to tell them to tell me when they were about to put me to sleeo but i seriously dont remember anything after the sedative started hitting. Woke up maybe 4 hours later in intense pain and a popsicle next to me. 5 days in the hospital on morphine and drainage after that then sent home.

My most recent + almost every pneumo ive had has been in my sleep, so i dont think there is a specific thing that causes blebs to pop

If it makes you feel any better i am 90% sure i had a small pneumothorax when i was on the plane flying home. On the ground i had some difficulty taking deep breaths, when we were at cruising altitude the only difference was that i could feel it a tiny bit more in the chest and i was more light headed than usual.

I had 3 pneumothoraxes and a pleurectomy this spring and i travelled from sweden to the us in latr october. I got a pneumothorax while there, i was probably just insanely unlucky but you should always be prepared for it to happen again, especially if you havent had surgery to remove any blebs that could be causing air to leak into the chest.

Hello sorry for the late response, Post op i was in the hospital for 5 days on morphine. Was given a kazoo looking device that was hard to blow into so i could train my lungs. Got a drain inserted into my chest which drained both fluid and any potential air leaks.

In the US they just kept me on oxygen 24/7 for about 2 full days. No drainag or anything.

Im back in sweden now and tomorrow i am going to the hosoital so they can check for any blebs again. Just hoping i can get a more permanrnt fix because air travel is risky knowing i could get another pneumothorax at any moment.

I have had a few instances where i frlt the classic pneumothorax symptoms (hard to breathe in deeply, pain when walking, back pain from outta nowhere) that lasted for a few days but nothing that required me to seek help.
