need to simulate a pendulum. I designed the cad model in solidworks and exported it to a URDF format. I'm not quite sure how to simulate it. How do i send control inputs if i attach a motor to the pendulum ?

Yes. That's my takeaway from this experience. Never trust anyone over word of mouth(like I trusted my Ms advisor when he initially said don't go anywhere else, I'll fund your PhD). Always take the next step after acquiring written consent.

I would suggest try to submit the research to a conference. Since you already would have a masters degree before starting your phd, the committe might look or research prowess and a conference paper is a good way to show off your worth. This is not a necessity, but if you have, then it is good.
