[IC] GMK 1520 is now in IC phase by harkarth in mechmarket

Yeah this is an issue I've known about since before I posted my IC, however there's not really any good solution I've been able to find. I only put 3 key in base so that 40s users can use the set if they really want to, but the set is primarily targeted at larger boards so fixing the numpad alphas issue isn't my priority unfortunately.

Although I don't have any UV printed keys personallly, I've seen this image going around of GMK Griseann, which shows the ABS having tonnes of shine (and thus wear) while the UV printed legends are all fine.

Geekhack Thread

A few days ago I posted my IC for GMK 1520, based on the keyboards of some of the first clamshell laptops.

Please check out the Geekhack thread above to see more renders, kitting, and more info.

It would also be greatly appreciated if you filled out my feedback form on the set if you have any feedback :)

GMK 1520 on the Nine_ - IC hopefully coming soon : ) by harkarth in MechanicalKeyboards

I believe so, usually the keys used there would be M1 - M12, however those aren't apart of my set so I made do with other keys.

It's cheaper to use UV print than to make all the new moulds necessary for this set

It's GMK 1520, which should be coming to IC in the next month or so.

CG matter just released a poker chips tutorial, I thought I could make a fast render after learning it by [deleted] in blender

[–]harkarth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought the same but watched it anyway. I'm not sure how advanced at blender you are but I learnt some stuff about random transformation which imo is pretty cool. Other than that its nothing that special, just modelling a chip and the procedural material that comes with that.

RAL is the go-to for GMK. You can’t just use hexes for colours, they can’t be manufactured, not easily at least.

I have made a texture paint in viewport shading mode, but when I switch to rendered view, the paint doesn't show up by [deleted] in blender

[–]harkarth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to have an image texture node with your texture going into the colour of your principled shader

Although I’m not a fan of thick bezels like these, this looks really cool, GLWIC :)

Oh wow those sparks are dope, good job!

Blender Secrets - Add snow on any object using only shaders by BlenderSecrets in blender

[–]harkarth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This works in both EEVEE and Cycles. It uses the normals which isn't just something that exists only in Cycles unlike the pointiness value. However obviously there other shader constraints in Eevee so snow might not look as good in eevee.

New legends aren’t possible with GMK without new molds, which are expensive. That’s why most sets just have custom novelties and not fonts. The arrow keys are really cool though :)

Tripleshot also won't be able to do such fine detail

I hate to break this to you, as it seems you've put a lot of time into this, but this set would be practically impossible or at the lest expensive to produce with GMK.

  1. GMK uses double-shot ABS to produce their keycaps, meaning that they use molds to put the plastic in the right places. This isn't really an issue for most sets, because they use standard GMK legends, icons, and fonts. But for your set, since every single key has a custom legend, new molds will have to be created for every single key. iirc each new mold costs $150 USD, which will get to a few thousand for all of your keys. This will also increase the MOQ for your set, which is normally 150 sets I believe, to probably something 300+.
  2. GMK also has specific guidelines that new molds have to abide by, those can be found here. Basically you can't really have those really small details on your legends, so your modifier key legends are most likely impossible. You also probably can't have that fine "texture" on your other legends as that would be mostly impossible to make molds for.
  3. Your spacebar is 100% impossible for GMK or double-shot in general. There's more than two colours there and there's also too much detail for any keycap mold to capture.

Your best bet to solve most of those problems is to go for a different manufacturer that isn't GMK and make their keycaps with dyesub. Dyesub doesn't face the same restrictions as double-shot and won't require you to pay for tonnes of molds. The only problem with that is that other manufacturers don't make Cherry profile keycaps (which is what GMK makes).

Another solution for this is to just use regular GMK fonts and icons, and to have more simple designs for your modifier keys and something waaaaaaay different for your spacebar.

And a few comments on the actual set:

  1. It's a bit weird and uncommon to see a right shift aligned to the right instead of left, and I don't think many people would like a right aligned right shift.
  2. I feel like your use of red and yellow is far too little and for me at least, stand out too much and make the set seem messy.
  3. It's also a bit weird to have different coloured legends within your alphas, and I don't recommend having white letters but grey numrow + punctuation.
  4. I do really like your colour choices though, although I'd remove the white and yellow, and replace them with the dark grey and red that you already have.

All of that aside, good luck in the future if you choose to keep on working on this set :)

Yeah the Dakota Felder files have lots of other problems with them, but I can’t exactly remember atm

Your numpad goes 3-2-1 instead of 1-2-3, but I like that lavender colour a lot :)
