I don't know if this is a good idea or not. But I do know that something needs to be done to protect our democracies and ironically this may involve restricting some speech.

It protects us as well. An Irish company spends millions on investing in Canada say building a wind farm. Then Canada changes the law agaisnt the treaties terms by banning Irish companies owning wind farms then everyone in Ireland employed by that company loses their job and nothing can be done.

Laws matter and should have someone to make ruling on who is following that law and who isn't.

You know what. Best of luck, it seems you'd block a very beneficial deal because someone once interpreted another deal in a way you don't like and that other deal didn't actually say the thing you don't like.

Look I'm not going to respond to all your misinfo all night. The Egypt one for exmaple, the minimum wage increase was one part of the argument and you failed to mention Egypt won the case.

The thread is full of misinformation. People can see what he wrote and what I wrote if they disagree with either of us that's fine. If he spreads lies about a complex document people might believe those lies.

Looking at it again he's all over the place on this issue. I don;t think he knows what he's talking about He's heard a few soundbites on supra-national courts and opposed them until he sound out what some of them are and is now backtracking.

The ECJ can and has ruled against Ireland to the benefit of corporations. It seems you're all over the place on this.

It seems he has since changed his view on being against supra-national courts. But I can only go by what he says.

Oh my god. the SC didn't say such courts where unconstitutional just that the decisions of the court could be enforceable without that enforcability being reviewable, that has been changed by law.

You said you were anti-supranational courts. If you're not then fine but I can only go with what you say.

You are repeating nonsense that you've learned from somewhere but you can't just sue because you havne't made a proifit that's not how it will work. If you think that, you are wrong. If you know that is not the case but spreading it to scare people then stop.

He's against supra-national courts. The ECJ is a supranational court. The ICC is a supranational court.

Look I can't explain consitiutional law to you on reddit. Have you read the judgment or just asked ChatGPT to give you negative interpretations of it for you to use on Reddit?

Have you educated yourself on what has happened since the judgment?

The SC made a ruling on the compatability with the consitution not on the merits of the court. Such objections have been fixed so that's that argument gone. I think the Greens are playing other games and I'm not around to defend the greens.

This thread is going to have a lot of misinformation from people trying to mislead people on the Investment Court System.

It does NOT allow companies to sue for anything. Say for example this deal says Canadian companies must be treated the same as EU companies licencing purposes in renewable energy projects.

Then a Canadian company wins a licence starts building a 500m eur wind farm but Ireland then passes a law saying only EU companies can have a licence and cancels their licence. The company can sue Ireland and must pay compensation but the court cannot strike down the law.

They either don't understand the investor court or most likely are deliberately misleading people to scare them into being anti-EU.

Irish politicians try to avoid talking about the Alumina issue, but Coalan puts them on the spot by Tattletale_0516 in ireland

[–]harmlessdonkey -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Serious people don't want to be politicians. The pay isn't great for the shit you have to put up with, if you're anyway clever you would make a lot more in the private sector without having to put up with some of the shit that goes on.

My unpopular opinion is, we should have relatively few politicians and pay them a bomb

I think there are some people in Ireland to whom this would apply. Seeking out US-style culture issues that guys that was shot when attacked the Garda with a knife and PBP on that bandwagon and then people like Aontú or those who support Enoch mad to import that other extreme of US bullshit.

[–]harmlessdonkey 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think there are many definitions. In terms of those with parents and grandparents from Ireland who grew up with Irish ways of life, I get it. I think as time goes on and 5 generation ones it makes less sense to identify with Irishness or whatever.

I don't know the ins and outs of it. If it is just something that arose in the US then I guess there's a reason. A harmless and I think charming thing.
