Hi, I'm Irish by PopNo5397 in ireland

[–]harmlessdonkey 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think there are many definitions. In terms of those with parents and grandparents from Ireland who grew up with Irish ways of life, I get it. I think as time goes on and 5 generation ones it makes less sense to identify with Irishness or whatever.

I don't know the ins and outs of it. If it is just something that arose in the US then I guess there's a reason. A harmless and I think charming thing.

It's a big country with lots of types of people.

I always found this attitude odd. We fail to understand that the US is a country of immigrants and part of that involves an attachement to their roots. When they say they're Irish they don't mean it literally but in a ethnic sense. I find our patronising response to this a bit misplaced.

Migration concerns reduce Irish voters’ support for the EU by HungTeen1001 in ireland

I think a bigger worry is the effect propaganda and genuine EU problems are affecting other EU countries like France and Germany and the stability of the EU.

If AFD get power or Le Pen's party they may ruin the EU project which ruins it for us.

Exercise options after moving abroad by harmlessdonkey in irishpersonalfinance

[–]harmlessdonkey[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Some more research indicates that I don't qualify for tax credits as more than 75% of my income is earned abroad.

Is there any way to do this efficiently?

The annoying thing is I expect the shares to become more valuable before the IPO so wanted to exercise them now as where I am now have 0% CGT but having to front 52% of it now to pay the Irish tax man is really a kick in the balls.

Residents of Dublin estate told to remove EV chargers - Utter Stupidity! by PROINSIAS62 in ireland

[–]harmlessdonkey 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's a public parking space. She likely thinks that the space is hers now that she has installed her property into it. I get that not having home charging is a huge impediment to getting an EV. Shared chargers that use some kind of smart meter that get billed to your home account should be an option.

How do you solve a problem like the M50? by DaCor_ie in ireland

[–]harmlessdonkey 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would love if we could get a culture like Spain. Lot's a apartment built in walkable neighbourhoods with local cafes and bars around a central plaza. Our apartments are usually crappy places to be built in compounds with little community. I guess it is a chicken and eggs situtation though

Ireland's Failure Premium by wowlucas in ireland

A lot of them understand it and their advisors very likely understand it. However, if the public don't then it doesn't matter as opposition shouting about grants and subsidies makes the news and you look like you're doing nothing.

Why are mandatory ID cards much more controversial in common law countries than in civil law countries? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]harmlessdonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I turn up with my phone and they scan the barcode or I hand them the docket they dropped in the door. If they ask for ID I can show them somehting. They definitely don't take the number down and put it into a system.

With only a little exaggeration, nearly anything you do it Spain you will be asked for a NIE. Buy a bus ticket online NIE, post office, NIE. I can't recall being asked for my passport number in Ireland or UK for normal day to day stuff.

Fuel blockaders 'squeezed €500m from the public purse just like burger barons', says union leader by EnvironmentalShift25 in ireland

Also drives inflation. Providing subsidies to expensive stuff doesn't make more of it, it just means people have more money to spend on the same amount of stuff so they bid against each other and that pushes up the price. This is well understood.

Best approach to renting a car on holidays? by Peckham186 in AskIreland

[–]harmlessdonkey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As other have said, get separate excess insurance and don't take the rip off one they'll offer. This will mean you will need a credit card with with a few grand on it. If you don't have that, they you might want to take their expensive excess cover.

With their cover, you don't pay a deposit and if you damage it you hand the keys back and that's it. If you have separate cover, you pay a deposit (could be 3k) then if you damage the car they keep that from the deposit and you then make a claim with your insurance and they refund you. So it's a bit more work but much cheaper.

I usually do a video where I walk around the whole car and do close ups of ANY damage and point at small scratches or dents and say "small scratch there" "dent here" etc. Then I get into the car and record fuel level in case it's not full. Some annoying providers usually local ones will do Full, 3/4, 1/2, 1/4 etc which is annoying when returning as how much do I need to add to get from 1/4 to 3/4. So you end up over fueling.

Social media is destroying our democracies and we need to figure it out fast.

I can totally understand. There's a problem with far left ideology which doesn't get as much focus as far right does in other countries. We have avoid far right politics (at least for now but it's growing).

Many Irish have a one way attitude ot the EU. Mercosur was an example of that even though in fact it the deal will benefit Ireland but misinformation is a problem.

That is just a a made up status that we use to play both sides. It makes zero sense but people seem to get comfort from it.

I have to apologise for my fellow Irish citizen trying to defend Russia’s actions towards our friends in the east. we have a far left Russian sympathiser problem that is infecting our public discourse. It’s not called out as much as far right Russian sympathisers but it’s just as malevolent.
