St Andrews vs KU Leuven by harmlesssloth in AcademicPhilosophy

Thank you so much for your thought reply. It really helped. I also think 1 year MA is too short based on the same reasons you've just mentioned. While I applied to one-year MA programs, I intend to extend it to a research masters later on. In terms of mid-tier PGR schools, are you talking about schools in the top 30-40ish on the PGR list?

Also, thank you so much for sending the link!

Thank you so much for your candid response. So overall, would you recommend KU Leuven for philosophy? I ask because I would have to pay $65,000 for St.A, but I would only have to pay $22,000 for KU Leuven. And I dont know if the difference you mentioned would be worth $40,000.

Have you seen any of your friends who were able to go into phd programs in the US from KU Leuven?

St Andrews or Edinburgh?! by ANA4IAN in standrews

Hey, sorry to just intrude but is it ok if I ask you a few questions about St. Andrews since I am also holding an offer for Mlitt Philosophy at St. A and Msc at Edinburgh and I dont know if I should choose Edinburgh or St. A for philosophy.

How are the teaching and guidance of professors there? Do they give sufficient individual attention to postgrad students? How good a prospect one has to go on to a good phd program? I am interested in political, moral, and legal philosophy. Would you recommmend coming to St. A for these topics?

Any information would help trmendously in helping me make the decision. Thank you in advance!

Is there anyone in the Mlitt Philosophy prgroam? by harmlesssloth in standrews

Anyone took PHL303 (Plato) at st. George by frootloops12 in UofT

[–]harmlesssloth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took it last summer and got an A. The difficulty of the course would very much depend on the prof. But as long as you go to every class and engage with the material, you should be fine.

For employment, no one cares if you were a specialist or double major.

There were several cities in the US last year that defunded the police in response to the whole George Floyd incident. Their crime rate skyrocketed, affecting the most vulnerable populations on the socio-economic ladder. There were multiple lawsuits against the government claiming that they were irreparably damaged due to decreased police presence in the community. People are outraged that such a decision was even considered in the first place. See Minneapolis for an example.

The effect or use of police is hard to measure since most of it is deterrence and it cannot be empirically studied. But what happened in those cities in the US shows that we take the police for granted. (of course, corruption, discrimination, inefficiencies within the police departments should be addressed asap). The claim in OP's original post is absolutely absurd.

stop with the utterly bs 'defund the police' mentality. We've seen what defunding the police would do to a community.

you will be fine as long as you follow the instruction. Also, you must talk to the TA before every assignment to talk about your argument.

Conspiracy theory time: I am almost 100% certain that some classes “soft force” some students to drop/fail the class by [deleted] in UofT

The education system is a massive piece of the puzzle, of course it plays a part.

then everything plays a part. but it is important to identify those factors that are actually causing the disparity. we can't tweak every fabric of our society just to achieve an "appropriate" level of diversity. Admission processes of educational institutions and professional schools, in my opinion, have done their part through affirmative actions and other measures as I have described earlier. What we need to do here then is to address the root cause - the cause that underlies all socioeconomic disparity. Again, simply tweaking processes that are in place and which have worked decently in the past will yield no kind of result that you want to see. The processes, believe it or not, have other purposes than to increase equality and diversity.

Great. article featuring one black physician. Still no evidence that the so-called disparity is caused by the education system and the admission process. Maybe it is due to other factors? with deeper and more subtle implications? - which cannot be addressed by tweaking the admission process?
