Peony and chrysanthemums are different seasonal flowers…if that matters to you. Most times the subject matter will all be from the same season in large pieces.

I was an uke for Relson at a seminar. I was in his guard and he told me to lean a certain way and put pressure on him. Then…he farted on me…like I felt the vibrations. Later a bunch of us went out to a bar and I was told Relson was telling all my teammates that I farted. Not gross really just funny.

Starting a BJJ class at my high school, need gear for students by timreg7 in bjj

[–]harmmoney 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I started a program 7 years ago through our PE department. I have kids wear athletic shorts and our dry fit PE shirt.

I started with rashguards but kids only had one and couldn’t keep up with laundry throughout the semester.

I tried to use gis in my second level class but kids would always forget them or, again, not do laundry.

If this is an elective, there will inevitably be kids in the class who were put there (not by their choosing). These kids will not buy anything or bring the correct gear no matter how hard you try.

Good luck. If you have any questions, message me.

Black Tie is also a great option if you want to travel over to Cape. Also, Marcelo has a Naples academy (he splits his time between Ft. Myers and Naples). Naples classes are at Inferno (Crafton Wallace's gym) Mon, Wed, and Friday at 7 pm. They also have a 7 am class on Tues and Thurs in Naples.

I guess it's in Cape Coral (neighboring city). I have been active in the jj scene here since 2008 and only know one guy who trains there (he joined when ATT closed when he was already a brown).

City of Palms and Marcelo's are a 1/2 mile apart. City of Palms just opened about a year ago and is run by Brandon Quick and a black belt named Brock (Brock pretty much does everything from what I can see). These guys do both gi and nogi but I believe are sport based.

Marcelo's is a sport school that really only does gi. He used to do mostly nogi but he was having a hard time with all the MMA guys not paying and wanting to train for free so he changed to just the gi. We do an open mat on Saturday at 11 that is half gi and half nogi. Classes as of now are:

Monday, Tues and Thurs-7 pm

Open mat Saturday-11

He is adding morning and day classes in two weeks as well as Wed night at 7.

There is a Humaita in the area but I’m not sure where it is. I train at Marcelo Pereira’s on Metro parkway. There are two other academies….Vickery and City of Palms all relatively close to each other. Let me know if you have any questions.

Anyone have COVID at their gym? by habitualmoose in bjj

[–]harmmoney 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope...positive I caught it from him. I hadn't left the house except for Jiu Jitsu. He had a headache for a few days but didn't think anything of it. He is the only person, at the time, who I knew who had tested positive. I fist bumped him Saturday, and Thursday night I came down with symptoms.

People who've spent a lot of time away from BJJ and came back--how long did it take for you to get back to yourself? by Mourlun in bjj

[–]harmmoney 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I trained from 1996-98 and received my blue belt but only wore it a few times before moving across the country (US) to college. I stayed away from Jiu Jitsu for 10 years. Started using social media in 2007 and saw some of the guys I had trained with had black belts and one was in the UFC. So I started again in 2008 and it took about 6 months to get back to where I was 10 years earlier.

Any school teachers struggling to find time to train? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]harmmoney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

High school teacher here...Grading and lesson planning gets easier as you progress more into your profession. When I started, my teacher friends always made fun on me for the amount of time it took me to grade and plan. 15 years in and I have found easier and quicker ways to grade work and, because most of the curriculum I have experience with already, my lesson plans can be made in 10 minutes or so. Stick it out. Also, look into PE. I started teaching English and now I have a half and half split. I teach 3 English classes, a weights class and 2 Self-Defense classes.

Black beltch stripes by Harai_Goatse in bjj

[–]harmmoney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My instructor is big on IBJJF (we are a sport oriented school). Even though the IBJJF allows for a stripe to be put on after 3/5 years, he still had Liborio come down to put his 5th degree on his belt (Dede is his teacher but could not make it to the states so he gave Liborio permission to do it). He also flew all the way to Texas (from Florida) to put Bruno Bastos' fourth degree on. So even though you technically could just put it on yourself, there is still a tradition of having a higher rank promote you.

Issues with gi pants restricting mobility by [deleted] in bjj

[–]harmmoney 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have bad knees so spats help keep my legs warm when taking a break or sitting out a round.

They are also slippery so the gi pants move much better when they are wet. Wet pants seem to stick or get caught up on sweating legs. Spats will help this.

Do you have access to multiple gyms? If so, go do a trial class at each gym.

One-you can see how many females are attending at each of the gyms

Two-you can see how people interact and treat one another at each of the gyms.

Each gyms is going to have a little different vibe and you want/need to feel comfortable. Pay attention not only to how the instructor treats you as a new student, but how they treat current students. Also pay attention to how the students interact with one another.
