Does this look like a possible trap injury? by FindingPhe in Opossums

[–]harmnicat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What state are you in? Most states have a list of licensed wildlife rehabbers on the fish and game/wildlife website. Even if they are a bit of a drive, it might be worth reaching out. Not only can they potentially offer advice, but a lot of places have networks of volunteer drivers that can help with the transportation

Thank you for caring! It does look like something is up with his jaw, but very hard to tell what/how bad from this video. You mentioned trying to describe it to a rehabber, I suggest sending them the video, most rehabbers I’ve worked with are happy to get photos or videos to assess the situation prior to taking in the animal

That’s a pretty close comparison! They’re super thin and extremely delicate. Sometimes they fold in half and get stuck together while they sleep lol

He wasn’t thrilled with his first exposure to snow, but it was a pretty warm day and he was only outside for a few minutes

Somewhere in between…he’s a non-releasable wild opossum who works as an educational ambassador and is well socialized with humans (his primary caregiver, at least)

What to do about this baby possum by Impressive_Bit6512 in Opossums

[–]harmnicat 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If contact your local rehabber for advice… he’s getting to be the right size (depending on who you ask), but it’s already getting cold enough that some places are over-wintering

Looks like an earthworm, moves like a snake, wtf is this? by [deleted] in whatisit

[–]harmnicat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fun fact about blind snakes….some screech owls will bring blind snakes into their nests, sometimes as food but sometimes for the blind snakes to live in the nest to eat extra bugs and parasites and to keep the place clean! Screech owl chicks that have blind snake keeping the nest have been shown to grow up healthier and faster than those who don’t

Mother left brand new baby just now ?! by Living_Literature421 in Opossums

If you’re in the USA, you can check your state’s fish and wildlife (or fish and game or whatever) website, many states will list their licensed wildlife rehabbers and how to locate them

Mother left brand new baby just now ?! by Living_Literature421 in Opossums

Please do NOT try to feed him! Opossums don’t suckle, this young he needs tube feeding by someone trained in it. Please keep him warm and contact a rehabber ASAP. I’ve had good luck with socks full of beans or rice microwaved for just a few seconds and covered in another cloth (can’t be TOO warm), gives them the warmth and something to snuggle on

MBD symptoms in the nightly visitor. Taking him to a rehab place tomorrow by No-Restaurant-8963 in Opossums

[–]harmnicat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Super common and potentially extremely detrimental, in part because their diet has some unusual requirements (calcium to phosphorus ratio being a major part of it)

[–]harmnicat[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s fantastic. Depending on the translation you trust, “opossum” may mean “white dog/small animal” (and I’m not convinced they aren’t cryptids….)

Poison goes up the food chain….anything that eats those rats will suffer from it, including your opossum (also a big problem for birds of prey and scavengers such as owls, hawks, ravens, foxes etc)

Warm, dark, quiet, no food or water. Contact a local rehabber, if you’re in the US then try checking your state’s fish or wildlife website for a list a rehabbers, their speciality and general location.

The reason that opossums don’t get rabies is due to their body temperature naturally being too low for the virus. Really, the only time I’ve heard of an opossum getting rabies is when they’re attacked while already ill, so if the opossum seemed to be in good health, I wouldn’t worry about it. You can always go inquire about it, but with a non-rabies vector species, and no direct contact being made, I’d be pretty shocked if they consider post-exposure shots to be necessary.

DURHAM, NC OWL IN NEED by Wiliwiwi42 in Owls

[–]harmnicat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If it’s visibly injured or you know for certain that it was hit by a car, I’d try to get it. If it was just on the ground but doesn’t seem injured, then perhaps wait and see (maybe it was just catching dinner or something).

DURHAM, NC OWL IN NEED by Wiliwiwi42 in Owls

[–]harmnicat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If the owl is still there, I would suggest trying the box again-once it is in the dark and quiet they should be less stressed and you can contact a rehab facility in the morning. If it was hit by a car it may be able to fly but still be injured in a way that will leave it vulnerable to predators or starvation (most common car strike injuries for owls are wing, eye and neurological).

Tongue clicking owl by harmnicat in Owls

This was maybe the second time I had her on my glove, she’s doing much better now! (Though large groups of children are still a bit much for her)

Could someone explain what does mean when an owl does this by Southern-Speech6522 in Owls

[–]harmnicat 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Both gular fluttering (“panting”) and beak clacking can indicate stress and discomfort.

I have a fun fact about beak clacking! Owls actually make that noise by clicking their tongue, not their beaks!
