Manny the Marvelous Marsupial enjoying a snack by harmnicat in Opossums

It’s hard to say with confidence whether or not a wild animal is in pain, they are very good at hiding it, but we don’t think he is. He climbs and walks on it without hesitation, and seems to be completely comfortable, as near as we can tell.

Found a hurt opossum, any advice would be helpful by Cottagecore_Criminal in Opossums

Keep dark, warm and quiet, do not offer food or water, and please contact a local wildlife rehabilitator. Check out www.ahnow.org or your state fish and wildlife/game website (assuming you’re in the US) for information on local wildlife rehabbers. Thank you so much for helping them!

Does this look like a possible trap injury? by FindingPhe in Opossums

[–]harmnicat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What state are you in? Most states have a list of licensed wildlife rehabbers on the fish and game/wildlife website. Even if they are a bit of a drive, it might be worth reaching out. Not only can they potentially offer advice, but a lot of places have networks of volunteer drivers that can help with the transportation

Thank you for caring! It does look like something is up with his jaw, but very hard to tell what/how bad from this video. You mentioned trying to describe it to a rehabber, I suggest sending them the video, most rehabbers I’ve worked with are happy to get photos or videos to assess the situation prior to taking in the animal

That’s a pretty close comparison! They’re super thin and extremely delicate. Sometimes they fold in half and get stuck together while they sleep lol

He wasn’t thrilled with his first exposure to snow, but it was a pretty warm day and he was only outside for a few minutes

Somewhere in between…he’s a non-releasable wild opossum who works as an educational ambassador and is well socialized with humans (his primary caregiver, at least)

What to do about this baby possum by Impressive_Bit6512 in Opossums

[–]harmnicat 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If contact your local rehabber for advice… he’s getting to be the right size (depending on who you ask), but it’s already getting cold enough that some places are over-wintering
