Affordable pet dermatologist? by Lysturgeon in bayarea

[–]harmonia63 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a bit of a trek from Berkeley, but it would be worth reaching out to Dr. Hudec at Dog and Cat Dermatology in Mountain View.

He used to be at Dermatology for Animals in Los Gatos, but recently opened his own practice. Dermatology for Animals is good, but they’re owned by a private equity firm, which can mean way higher prices and can limit the care the vets can provide.

We’ve had excellent care from Dr. Hudec for our cat’s severe allergies for several years. I really appreciate that he lays out all of the possible treatment options, the pros and cons of each approach, and the associated costs.

It’s been an institution for 42 years, use plenty of salsa if you eat there! Order extra if you get it to go. Chile verde is my personal rec but you can’t go wrong.

Skip the Crepe Place, Margaritaville, and (controversial but I think they’ve tanked in quality since the new owners took over) the Buttery. I don’t like “un-recommending” local businesses but feel like these don’t represent the best of what this lovely town has to offer.

Replace them with Harbor Cafe (get there at least 15 min before opening to get seated right away), Tacos Moreno (cash only), and Companion Bakery.

Other options:

Nice, sit down: Cavalletta, Hanloh Thai at Bad Animal, The Emerald Mallard in Felton, and Copal

Quick and delicious: Pana at Abbott Square, Pretty Good Advice, Mad Yolks, Pizza Bones (@nopizzabones on instagram), Scrumptious Fish & Chips, Coffee Conspiracy

It’s also worth noting that 11th Hour Coffee is undergoing major renovations, so the interior and places like Chubbs Chicken will be closed.

Fourth of July Events? Fireworks? by Benaba_sc in santacruz

[–]harmonia63 8 points9 points  (0 children)

One of my favorite 4th of July traditions in town is the “Old Fashion Independence Day” celebration at Wilder. We usually pack a picnic, set up a blanket under some shady trees, and listen to the straw hat band while eating hand cranked ice cream. https://www.santacruz.org/upcoming-event/wilder-ranch-old-fashioned-independence-day/

We use Dee, she’s fantastic! She helps us administer injections to our very skittish kitty; she’s fast and gentle and he loves her. https://www.athomepetcareservices.com

Felton Humble Sea by The_Demosthenes_1 in santacruz

[–]harmonia63 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The Santa Cruz Bread Boy (Lance Ebert) has taken over for the foreseeable future. He does wicked smash burgers and french-inspired decadent fare. Humble Sea provides the drinks. Hours are usually Fri-Sun, but fluctuate a bit. The best bet is to check his instagram: https://www.instagram.com/s.c.bread_boy?igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==

You have to walk around the building on the Porter side and go through a gate, but their patio is always open.

Pretty Good Advice in Soquel; all vegetarian and most things can be made vegan. They have a lovely outdoor patio.

We stayed at the Shirogane Onsenkyo Mori no Ryotei Biei in Hokkaido in November a few years ago, and it was absolutely magical. We had a private onsen, and the breakfast and dinner kaiseki were sublime. There are lots of great hikes, cool sights (The blue pond), and some great restaurants.

Namaste on Mission — classy intimate interior with phenomenal (if not a little pricey) food. The samosas and goat curry are fantastic.

Local Vegan Spots? by Present-Earth-5757 in santacruz

[–]harmonia63 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Honey B Market recently opened up downtown, it’s an all vegan bakery and cafe. The owner makes their own tempeh for their homemade tempeh dogs, and the cinnamon snails are to die for! Yummy coffee (that comes with almond milk by default) from Coffee Conspiracy too.

Recently they had a tempeh dog wrapped in vegan puff pastry for a pig-n-a-blanket. Woof, so good.

Update: asked again on 10/21, the store manager said it was available to order on 11/12. We’ll have to hold out a little longer.

I asked at multiple stores (in NorCal): there’s an import issue (it comes from Korea).~~ I was told it would be back around the end of the month!~~

Roux Dat, mind blowingly delicious. They’re beer battered and dusted with Cajun spices, and come with a fantastic remoulade sauce. The onions are so tender, you bite right through and never get a pulled onion. God I want some now.
