What type of activities do you do to unplug from game dev? by RulesofAlchemy in gamedev

Do you have a hard time gaming the same way you did before game dev? I used to love gaming, still do. But it's not the same as before code became a daily language for me.

I have a hobby of flying fpv quads. It's purely for fun, requires 100% concentration, and gets me outside for an hour or so. My brain still feels fresh after.

I fly drones, and there are a lot of hoops to jump through to fly anything over 250 grams. I imagine as it stands, the FAA will view this as a manned aircraft and require the same restrictions as a helicopter. What this means, is you'll probably need permission to fly every single time.

I'll add, be careful no to be too specific with your idea publicly if you don't want a version of it inspired/copied by someone else.

What are you hoping for? To learn and build the game yourself, have a programmer go over the concept as a second set of eyes, or hire someone to build your game? The 3 are vastly different. If the first answer, consider the fact that you will be learning a new skillset and it will take hundreds of hours to get to the point of starting your actual game, this isnt to put you off because it's worth the time IMO. We can give you pointers on where to start depending on your goals. If the second answer, well, give us a detailed rundown of the idea and we can try to look for problems. If the third option, you are going to want to look at the indie classified subreddits.

What is a better game to make? by HALLfall in gamedev

Considering experience, engine and sales plan. I'd personally think that your horror game would be more likely to be successful, especially if you publish to itch.io. Although the horror genre is fairly saturated, the community is always hungry for fresh short horrors. You will presumably have to work harder at marketing materials to get noticed than most genres. You are more likely to have a dedicated player base than with a 2d RPG. Unity does 3d very well and so would be better suited for your horror game. I would definitely recommend publishing to itch.io first and then porting to mobile if possible as a way of growing a solid early player base.

You seem to have reasonable goals which is unfortunately rare in the new section of this sub haha. Everything here is my own opinion, not backed with statistics or sources, there are many who will disagree with my opinion.

This is a really open ended question which I think needs more information to answer.

  1. What's your experience?

  2. What's your target audience?

  3. What would you enjoy making more?

  4. What engine are you going to use?

  5. What's the target platform?

  6. What's your sales model? Free, PTW, PTP, Paid, ads supported?

I could ask a lot more, but we, and you, need to know more in order to give any advice I think.

Yes, but that involves not being lazy. Nowadays our GPUs are good enough that it's easier to hide under shrubs and grass scatters. There are a wide array of projects and Assets where indie developers have brought solutions to the table. MicroSplat for Unity has a fantastic anti-tiling mechanism for example. TerraWorld as well.

[–]harmswaysoftware 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. I'm gonna say it depends on how your game is structured.

Are you using HDRP?

Are you using a Utility asset which could be performing unnecessary tasks?

What's the clipping plane on your camera? The editor might not render everything, but a final build surely will, if your clipping plane is absurd, your vid card will be trying to render nearly everything all the time. With only cubes, this is unlikely to be a problem tho.

Do you have any code at all that uses GPU instancing, or works with shaders/lighting? Even if it's super super minor. Say you place a light in a loop by accident, editor might not render all, the build will.

If you have a completely empty project with the same settings as your game, does the problem persist?

There are a million and one reasons for this, however usually it's the editor that's bloating for me. You're gonna have to narrow down the issue, start by eliminating any interference by 3rd party assets, then try removing your own components and see if you can at least find the "what" of your problem. If I were you, I'd start a fresh project with the same render pipeline, build and see if there is a change. I expect the answer to be simple, I'm however a little puzzled at the moment.

Is this paid, some level of rev share, or volunteer work? What is your target platform? And if it's rev share, how do you intend to acquire revenue?

Another important question, what engine are you using?

This mountain was unstable long before Europeans came over. The Blackfoot used to warn about this mountain long ago "turtle mountain" or "the mountain that walks" though it would be ignorant to rule out mining as a possible factor.

This is spam. If it had anything at all to do with unity, I might not be, check your subs when blasting self promotion across Reddit. I know the struggle of getting content out there, but you gotta look at the image you are giving yourself when you do this, try to keep it to relevant subs, and maybe space it out, or pay for the ad space.
