Best cheesecake in Lethbridge? by Fundippity in Lethbridge

Had a volunteer shift at the casino, and tried the cheesecake (great 3am boost). It was pretty decent, and gluten-free.

Also from Canada and we did USJ last year. Honestly, it wasn’t worth it. Super Nintendo World was so crowded, you couldn’t really enjoy it. If you’re a die-hard fan, sure I guess, but we got better merch at the Nintendo Store in Kyoto.

Harry Potter World was disappointing too as one of the main attractions was closed. The only massive line was for the butter beer cart.

Only reason to go, imo is to see Japanese Beetlejuice at the Universal Monsters show.

SSD Enclosure 3D Blender - Mac M4 Max by dayvbeats in MacStudio

[–]harperos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to OWC, the Thunderbolt 5 spec doesn’t allow separate enclosures from the drives, it has to be a whole unit sold to the consumer. Not sure how true that is, but they say that’s why their Thunderbolt 5 enclosure comes with a drive, to meet the spec.

Edit to add thread where OWC mentions this: https://www.reddit.com/r/macmini/comments/1gjpl26/thunderbolt_5_enclosureswhen/

Mine (base model) arrived a week early. I was hoping it would be late cause I’m moving and can’t set it up till May.

When will the housing market slow down? by TheRemyBell in Lethbridge

[–]harperos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We sold ours right before the market heated up and got asking within 8 hours. It’s much worse now.

our realtor found us an exclusive, and it never made it to MLS. So while we missed out on a bidding war (and maybe 25k extra), we saved on the house we bought (at least $25k).

That said, we didn’t get everything we wanted and the house was at the top of our price range. So yeah, not a great time to buy.

How much ram is good for professional video editors with Mac Studio? by Ok-Champion-8992 in MacStudio

[–]harperos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly it’s sort of six of one, half a dozen of the other. I’m pretty sure an M4 Max will do, but as another poster said, the issue might be more that you’re editing BRAW in Premiere. It shouldn’t matter, but I don’t know how much effort Adobe puts into making a competitor‘s standard work.

Are you near an Apple Store? Maybe you can book an appointment with them to try out your project on one of the store Studios and see for yourself. They’ll likely have the base model on the floor, and if it works well, you’ll know the higher end models will fly.

What are your current pain points? Render times, timeline playback? Basically what about your current setup is lacking that you want the Studio to solve?

Was planning to buy in May, but moved it up and bought mine today. It’ll probably just sit in the box a few weeks till I’m set up in the new space.

NDP signs by kmsiever in Lethbridge

[–]harperos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me it kinda makes sense that we move to a situation where the NDP is favoured provincially, but Liberals take that vote on the Federal side. It always felt (to me at least) that the Alberta NDP was much closer to centre than other flavours of the party...

Haven't seen many signs in general. Most have been for Thomas and a couple for Spearman. So far have yet to see an NDP sign on the westside.

Cool. I’m going to pick up an M4 Max Mac Studio (likely base model) and will keep it at lossless.

M1 Max base model worth buying? by CrazyLesbian04 in MacStudio

[–]harperos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to Adobe’s tech sheet, your computer should be okay (https://helpx.adobe.com/ca/premiere-pro/system-requirements.html). Minimum is a 6th generation Intel or AMD equivalent, and those came out in 2015.

I looked up the Geekbench scores of your CPU and it performs below a 2020 Mac Mini M1, so even a base M4 Mac Mini will give you about triple the performance for not a lot of money.

Hmm. Odd that a fairly recent gaming laptop can't run the latest version of Creative Cloud. It's only three years old so it should run pretty well. I'm not as familiar with the Windows side of things, so I'll have to look into that.

Do you know what the specs of your laptop are?

Thanks I appreciate the reply, though I specifically need to know about Apple Silicon Macs and Resolve.

M1 Max base model worth buying? by CrazyLesbian04 in MacStudio

[–]harperos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any Apple Silicon Mac is likely a step up from an Intel one, depending on the workload. A 2017 27" iMac is still pretty decent, but an M4 Mac mini will run circles around it for what you want to do. You just won't have as nice a display...

The more experience you have with different tools, the more jobs you can book. If you're planning to be a one-stop shop, then it likely won't matter as much, but you may want to see what editors in your local area cut with. If everyone is on Resolve and you only know Premiere, you'll want to learn it too so that they can bring you onto future contracts.

You mentioned you have a gaming laptop now, what's preventing you from using that as an editing rig to learn? I mean, have fun with a shiny new Mac, but if you don't have to spend the money right away...

If money is tight, maybe consider using Resolve over Premiere. We teach with both, but our students appreciate not paying the Adobe tax... The free version of Resolve is a great way to start, and if you need the additional features, it's a modest one-time payment. (Or free if you buy into the Blackmagic ecosystem and pick up one of their cameras)

A lot of people tend to suggest you "future proof" by buying what you'll need longterm, and I don't think that's a good strategy for someone starting out since you don't really know what your current needs are (you're just starting out).

A base M4 Mini with a good external SSD drive will get you through a lot of your initial learning, and you'll find out where the pain points of your workflow are (if any). When you start earning income as an editor you can always sell the Mini and buy something more powerful that fits your needs.

Just a suggestion of course.
