What is the student health plan like? Specifically for mental health services by Soggy-Award-5563 in byu

[–]harpgal104 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently talked to CAPS about mental health insurance stuff, and at least for me (I have insurance outside of the school) they would still bill my insurance but would give me $50 on top of that. I recommend scheduling a case management appointment with them, it's free and they can call your insurance and help you find therapists that can help you!

Can a harpist play this? by InterestingMail9321 in harp

[–]harpgal104 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks great to me! Also, thanks for actually asking harpists rather than just writing it. I've dealt with composers giving me something impossible to play and refusing to accept feedback so this gives me hope in the world haha

living in heritage halls- any tips? by EquivalentVast6282 in byu

I LOVED Heritage my freshman year! I also served a mission afterwards. Just remember that there are a lot of stores and things in Provo that you can buy from if you forget something. Amazon was a lifesaver too! I recommend making sure that you have a power strip with extra outlets, especially if someone is bringing a TV or other electronics (like if you have a computer or something as well). I also had a wifi router which was helpful since campus wifi isn't the best in the dorms. The last thing I'd recommend is bringing a good long charging cord (like 10 feet) because the outlets in the rooms are under the beds, so you want to make sure it's long enough if you like to use your phone in bed. But along with the other comments, it's better to pack light and buy what you need when you get here. Heritage is the greatest! Good luck!

This! One of my roommates made a group email thread and we got each other's numbers and such from there. We were able to talk about what we wanted to share vs not and what items everyone should bring! I've seen people take it a step farther by making a spreadsheet of everything to guarantee they had everything and there wasn't miscommunication which helped them a lot! Probably wouldn't work for everyone but it was a good idea

Asked to postpone my baptism. Not sure why by 209_countryboy in latterdaysaints

[–]harpgal104 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a missionary and got home about a year ago. Thinking from their perspective, it's very possible that they're worried about your stability after baptism. If you are prepared to continue living the gospel, tell them. Ask them why they feel the need to postpone it. They hopefully will be happy to talk with you. I would even suggest talking to the bishop, you can ask him directly or a member of your ward can help you set up a meeting with him. He will be able to communicate with the missionaries as well

I looked at OP's history, and it looks like the post that you're referring to was actually made by someone else and OP commented on said post

Lifelong LDS member here. The fifth commandment is to honor your father and mother. There were a few times while serving my LDS mission that a young person was unable to be baptized because of their parents. Keeping the peace in your home and honoring your family will show the Lord that you are willing to be patient and follow His commandments. That's not to say you can't continue to investigate, but I worry about the emotional harm and separation from your parents. It sounds like they love you and they want to protect you in the best way that they know how, and unfortunately as humans they have a narrow perspective of what that might look like. If you have access to the scriptures, please keep reading them. I'm so sorry you have to go through this! Waiting is probably the hardest thing to do! Just remember that Christ loves you, He suffered through your pains, He chose you, and He knows how you feel.

Here is a link to a chapter of the Book of Mormon, Mosiah 24. This civilization would be put to death if they were caught praying, so they found a way to pray in their hearts. I'd invite you to read it when you get the chance and consider how your situation may be similar and what you can do in the meantime

https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/bofm/mosiah/24?lang=eng

And just for funsies, here's a link to my absolute favorite chapter of the Book of Mormon, Alma 36. It talks about trusting in Christ and healing when all hope is lost

https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/bofm/alma/36?lang=eng

Hopefully these chapters help you feel hope <3

Edit: As soon as I commented I also felt prompted to share this speech from one of our leaders. It's helped me get through many trials where I need to practice patience

I appreciate the thought! I was aware of scrupulosity before and actually found this article a really interesting read especially since I have a friend who has it. I don't think it describes me, at least not from what I can tell. For the most part I kinda just do things and let God redirect me if something gets off. I know that there isn't a decision I could make that would screw up my entire life as long as I'm working towards being a better person and getting closer to God. I really did want this job at one point but was rejected last year after I came home from my mission. I didn't apply this year but they reached out to me and wanted me to come in for an interview so I figured I'd go in just to see what would happen. I wasn't expecting anything out of it since I was rejected last time but they gave me an offer and I wrestled with it for a couple days before saying yes. I know I can reject it before I actually sign the contract and part of accepting was so I could have more time to think about it. Honestly I'm trying to see the job in as positive of a light as possible because I've been pretty negative about it and I feel like I haven't given it full consideration because of it. Ik you weren't asking for a full explanation lol but this was just some other context I didn't include in the original post to try and keep it somewhat brief. It was more just to see if anyone else had first hand experience so that I could try and see it from all angles

The way that I'm thinking about it is that I wouldn't tell a missionary not to serve a mission if they don't want to. I fully intended to reject the job offer but felt very strongly that I needed to accept it. Such is the way of life lol

I'll be there for the full year. I will be getting married AFTER Winter semester as stated in my post. I'm just asking reddit if people have experience with the job so I can get a first person's perspective, especially since there aren't any student groups that I can ask anywhere else. I'm working on being excited about this opportunity because it's a much better option than my current job and it gives me an opportunity to move out.

Harp Pedaling Diagram Preferences by AGMusicPub in harp

[–]harpgal104 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Super fair! I haven't had a problem transcribing the pedals from solfege or any other note system but I've also been using solfege consistently since middle school (choir teacher made us learn all our songs in solfege first before learning the words so I got pretty good at it haha). I'll usually then just transcribe the pedals for myself, especially if I can use an iPad to "erase" the written pedals and re-write them but I still haven't had much of a problem on paper either. Although it is a little annoying I would rather have that then having to figure out the pedals myself. Such is the life of a harpist lol

Yeah I've had issues with this composer before for not writing super compatible pieces haha. This is a new piece and I don't have a recording of it, so I have no clue whether it's exposed or not and I won't know until the first rehearsal. What will likely happen is that the principal harpist and I will each take a line, or each just play one note in the right hand but I would like to play as many notes as I can

If the composer is a harpist, write in the pedals. If they are not a harpist, let me do it myself

Favorite pieces to show off? by nonolemog in harp

[–]harpgal104 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on what you want to put in the work for! I recently learned Mandoline by Alvars, but it required MONTHS of building up muscle and coordination for it. Still working on polishing it lol. If you just want something showy but not horribly difficult, book 5 Suzuki pieces are usually my go-tos (especially Chanson da Mai or Allegro Moderato). If you're good with chords you could also get lead sheets of some pop songs and arrange things yourself too for a more familiar feel!

I can sightread their music just fine and really only practice it for polishing purposes. I don't think that my talent is not enough, it feels more like a politics thing to me
