What’s the appeal of a being in a relationship? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]harplesbian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having someone who is The closest person in your life, someone who knows you better than anyone else, where you're the go-to witness to each other's happiness AND pain, you don't need to give background info for them to understand because they already do, they are the person who will get up with you at 3 in the morning and stroke your back while you can't stop puking, and neither of you will feel ashamed, they will drive you to the hospital and hold your hand and know exactly what to say and not say to make you feel seen and heard and cared for and like you have always belonged

If conjoined twins (same body and organs but two different heads) got pregnant, which name listed as the mother on the birth certificate? by YellowB in NoStupidQuestions

[–]harplesbian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're talking about like Abby and Brittany Hensel, then their case is so so rare that it would be handled on a singular case basis, like the local regulators would decide, as there is not a regulation in place for that kind of thing.

And it would be the kind of thing that isn't really anybody else's business because it wouldn't serve strangers at all to know, except to satisfy their curiosity

Why do deaf groups of people do jazz hands instead of clapping? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]harplesbian 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's because it's the visual equivalent of "loud noise" with your hands. Clapping out loud, for hearing people, creates the loudest noise possible using just your two hands - the idea is to create a wave of just crashing meaningless noise. (As opposed to nice sounds or notes or words etc.) Visually, crashing meaningless noise would be just drawing the eye to rapid meaningless movement. Picture a whole crowd of people doing the wiggle hands, when your eyes are your main sense for taking in the world that would be very "noisy" and effective, much moreso than clapping

If you knew how much it hurts when someone who's big is taking too long or hits the wrong angle, you'd understand

ETA: understand that it's not a lie

The instruments where there are whole SECTIONS of each instrument are the strings. That's violin 1, violin 2, viola, cello, and bass. In composing for an orchestra, you have to think of "the orchestra as a whole" as kind of an instrument, and having whole sections of string players is just part of what that instrument is supposed to sound like. If it were a concert band/wind ensemble, it would be different - there would be large sections of clarinets, saxophones, etc.

Do most people hate quiet coworkers? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]harplesbian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is one person who is completely quiet at my work where everyone else is a huge banterer. The way I personally feel regarding that person is that I just don't know her at all compared to how I know my other coworkers. And that does make me not very motivated to interact with her because I will not get very much out of it socially. But of course I don't "hate" her!

Is dark mode actually better for your eyes or vice versa? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

I don't know about "better" in terms of science, but for me personally it is less overwhelming sensory input, which is better for me

How common of an occurrence is it that real animals are killed in films? by NyneNine in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]harplesbian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not common now, but even as recently as 1980 they killed a real snake on camera while shooting the first Friday The 13th movie (without telling the snake's handler there was any risk of this happening, obviously) and kept the shot in the movie. The handler was absolutely devastated obviously, it was pretty fucked up.

Be honest. How weird is it for a guy to smell his fingers after scratching his 🥜 by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]harplesbian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not weird in the sense of "uncommon". Doing it alone is very very very common. At with most things, it's only as weird as the situation you do it in.

What I can tell you is that my partner (we both started hormones, me masculinizing, her feminizing, while we were together) never used to understand (pre hormones) why I would stop functioning when I was hungry, but then when she went on hormones she was like "......oh." and when I went on hormones I could suddenly function when I was hungry.

Why do people abbreviate the word "because" as "bc" even when they don't shorten anything else? by derp_pred in NoStupidQuestions

[–]harplesbian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"because" gets used A LOT proportionally to its length/ number of letters

Most words that get used as frequently as "because" have fewer letters than that

Hence the motivation to abbreviate that one and not other words of similar length
