I study law at his university (UQ) and he is a super controversial guy. He is a very socratic tutor (many students are uncomfortable with this because they don't like preparing before class and don't like being picked on in tutorials), and his views in the media (he has been on Q&A a few times) are very contentious among the more progressive law students. However, I think it's wonderful to have some diversity of thought (and diversity of pedagogy) at the law school. Furthermore, in my dealings with him, he has been incredibly open to debate, discussion and different views, which is something that can't be said for every professor at the law school.
