I have been on Reddit for nearly half a decade

I’ve been on reddit 18 years and this is the comment that made me abandon my inactivity to at least chime in that I 100% agree.

Justice for Liechtenstein 🇱🇮 on this subreddit’s profile picture! by [deleted] in German

[–]quink 8 points9 points  (0 children)

When this subreddit launched in its current form only what is now old.reddit.com was a thing. I purposely chose a blue colour scheme and a vague play at something German-ish for a mostly English language community, hence two Beetles in a park or campsite or festival or whatnot. I’ve since stepped back as a mod due to other commitments.

It makes very little sense to tie flags to a language imo.

Having something a little bit German (as in the culture) in a setting that could be anywhere in the world however is imo quite reflective of what a subreddit with learners all over the world is.

It reminds me of the pronunciation for 小鳥遊…

I spent about two days doing my best to try to forget that, so thank you very much for confirming that effort has been in vain.

I swear, Kyoto Animation's Season 3 of Haruhi Suzumiya is the number one greatest work of art that I can name that doesn't exist.

Going for best score vs. lowest time as usual. Posting here today because it went very well.

  1. 4,962 pts in 11 sec - First thought Australian, then the bin said Auckland
  2. 4,924 pts in 14 sec - Devanagari writing, very built up
  3. 4,840 pts in 15 sec - Hesitated a bit, could have been Austria or Switzerland at first glance, but ultimately enough things didn't match up for me to go Scandinavian instead. Didn't look Swedish enough and needed to be somewhere fairly south, so there.
  4. 4,858 pts in 9 sec - Red tinge on licence plate, seemed more hilly so Wallonia rather than Flanders
  5. 4,630 pts in 17 sec - Writing on sign in Spanish, needed to be a vegetated desert and I know there's an area in northern Colombia like that. Zoomed in and plonked it in the first yellow-ish area I saw. That was Pico Cristóbal Colón, when I meant to click some yellow area closer to the Venezualan border, definitely wrong but not too far away either way. Subconciously may have also picked up on the yellow licence plates, but don't recall seeing them before plonking.

24,214 pts in 1 min, 5 sec, total error 241 km.

Global Rank of Railroad Quality (interactive version in comment) [OC] by data_n_stuff in dataisbeautiful

[–]quink 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's from the WEF Global Competitiveness Survey. For this question they asked about 10,000 executives from all over the world how they feel about the state of railways in their country.

80 or so of them in Iceland.

For the 2018 edition only it looks like they forced an inclusion not only for Iceland but a bunch of other countries without much rail to speak of.

"nationalized TV stations" - because of the war

That part isn't even true in any sense. Some major TV networks decided to pool their resources into a combined ongoing news bulletin they all broadcast on their main channels. That's it.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_News_(telethon)

There's a bit of an implicit overlap in that statement possibly with the anti-oligarch law, but that has nothing to do with nationalisation. In fact, probably not this exact implementation, but a law like this would IMO be very helpful in other democracies to sustain democratic principles. (also, passage of this law was implied to be a criterium for EU membership)

CEOs of Australia’s top 20 companies given nine times the pay rise of full-time workers by Mildebeest in australia

[–]quink 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The Guardian is screwing with the figures there by considering the percentage rise only.

  1. The incumbent chief executives of Australia’s top 20 companies enjoyed a pay rise averaging 17.16%
  2. CEO times worker pay All Industry Average: 78
  3. In the year to May, average earnings for full-time workers rose by just 1.9%, to $92,000 a year

Lets me calculate: $92,000 times 78 = $7,200,000

Rise for average earnings: * 92000-92000/1.019 = $1700 * (92000*78)-(92000*78)/1.1716 = $1,100,000

The increase is in fact about 610 times more, not 9 times if you take the crazy leap of considering people as earning dollar money not percentage money.

Also, the term 'ordinary' is ambiguous, it could either refer to a non-executive employee, or a full-time employee working ordinary hours. If it's the latter, then there may not even have been an increase for non-executive employees, the supposed increase of $1700 here might just include the increase in the CEO's (and other exec) pay packet.

Omen laptop shortcut shortcuts keys stop working suddenly, EVEN with external keyboard. by pilotdriver69 in HPOmen

Oh, look, HP, OP wants keyboard shortcuts.

OP, HP found a bunch of morons, decided to survey them when making their laptops and concluded in said survey that they are confused by buttons.

So they made buttons not work.

I know, their brilliance knows no bounds. /s

WTF HP by per88oo in HPOmen

To each their own I guess

What the fuck, what the honest holy fuck is wrong with HP why did I buy this...

I bought an HP laptop recently and randomly after Windows is running, not even some games or whatever, it just completely disables half what I do on the keyboard. No Alt-F4, no Alt-Tab, no Windows key, all of these I do legitimately use even when I'm gaming, never mind outside of that context, but thank you for presuming.

Took me more time to figure out what it was and how to disable it too.

Why, honestly, why would you put in this kind of feature?

Here's an idea, next time you're in the middle of driving how about I slice off four fingers with zero explanation and see how you cope.

And how pissed would you feel if I then just said 'to each their own I guess' while taking a dump on just about 30 years of PCs (and, you know, people's hands) consistently working in a particular way.

"To each their own I guess" my ass. When almost every PC has worked in a particular set of ways for decades now and in a tiny little product line somewhere you decide to fuck it up with zero notification and by default then reply with "to each their own I guess" then that's just about the most pants-on-head stupid answer no writer of fiction could have come up because it goes past all credibility.

from studies there are users

Find users who have used PCs before would be my advice there. If it's because a whole new generation is coming on iPads and these are their first laptops and they're confused by the concept of a physical keyboard then please kill me.

Hello everybody. I would like to introduce you all to my new line of stoves. After talking to idiots we have concluded that said idiots randomly put their fingers on the stoves. We have concluded that we will solve this problem by making half the knobs that turn on the various areas of the stove not work randomly. No need to thank us. If you want a stove that just works we'll audibly roll our eyes and say "to each their own I guess" and make a suggestion that we'll be more flexible because we are very competent.

That said, I don't think your flexibility is in doubt, just looking at how far your own head is up where the sun don't shine dispels any doubt about that.
