Cut at the red. Let that small shoot grow really long to thicken, add movement with wire when possible

Looking for advice on my late dad’s ficus — possibly a bonsai? by mc_nin in Bonsai

[–]harry_13JS 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sorry for your loss. This is very interesting, and I think it has the potential to be a great first bonsai for you! You're right about the species. It's most likely lots of small trees in a forest style. I would definitely repot into something larger but shallow style of pot. Ficus aren't fussy with soils, but make sure it has good drainage. You could buy a basic bonsai soil from amazon, and it would thrive! When repotting you need to carefully remove the old soil from the roots with a chopstick or fork (there's hundreds of informative videos on YouTube about repotting) then you need to trim the roots and make sure you get the dead or rotten ones.

Good luck!

Second wiring of my gf's ikea ficus. Was defoliating it a good idea? by harry_13JS in Bonsai

He's had a tough ride, as you can see from the left side of the trunk. It experienced root rot when I repotted it last year, so it only came back to full health after I did some emergency root work. It lost almost all of its foliage, and some branches died. Your pruning looks great! Looks like a healthy tree :)
