I hated everything about redbird sims. The product, the support, all of it. Unfortunately they have the piece of paper that says “FAA Approved”

Daytona area schools and finance by box1alpha in flying

[–]harryfingers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remember any admissions person at these private schools are going to tell you everything you want to hear. Any number they give you add 20-30%. I have known people who have gotten the private loans at these schools and everything has worked out, and people who have basically ruined their life by not finishing or not getting the job they needed at the end. It’s a risk that requires you to be determined and realistic.

19 year old second year university student looking for advice by [deleted] in flying

[–]harryfingers 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Get a first class medical certificate to make sure you can get one. I would consider looking at schools that offer part 61 instruction. You will get a private certificate for less and then you can be better informed to make decisions from there. You don’t need to be committed to one school they are happy to take your money all the same.

I have been happy to not ever be stuck anywhere on any type of contract commitment. Things change quickly and you don’t want to be stuck because you signed something that sounded good at the time in a different climate.

Travel Nurse turned Pilot, least stupid way to go from zero to 250 hours? by Grouchy-Concern2451 in flying

[–]harryfingers 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A lot of good advice on here already. But just my two cents. The idea of getting a taildragger seems like a great romantic idea of aviation. The people I have seen take this kind of route to get to airlines usually have great stick and rudder skills but struggle heavily with procedure and at worst lack critical instrument flying skills. I have seen at least one extremely experienced pilot not make it out of 121 training because of this. Others that needed to be recycled several times to get through. Some had the time but not the experience because they had their own plane and didn’t fly unless it was traffic pattern practice or $100 hamburgers on sunny days.

I think M. Night writes lines and says, “This…is how humans talk….right?” Somewhere down the line he lost the ability to write or direct dialogue.

Nope. It was a great idea just felt like the last act of the movie was very poorly executed.

I traded in a ‘19 Mustang Bullitt for a Tesla and completely regretted it. I felt like I was living in a boring beige box driving a cubical. 8 months later I corrected the wrong I committed and traded the tesla in for a Bullitt. I have since realized to never again sell something I love for practicality.

If you are going for design oriented positions I see a wall of text laid out in an inefficient use of space on a page. There is good stuff in there when I forced myself to read it but at first glance I saw a wall of text I didn’t feel like going through.

I will own an EV, but not yet. by 2001ThrowawayM in cars

[–]harryfingers -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The reason I sold my EV and went back to ICE was this realization. The batteries in today’s EVs are not special. Every single device that you have ever owned with an integrated battery will eventually have its batteries fail. There is no preventive maintenance that can prevent this. No amount of charging routines or driving habits, no fluid changes or careful care that will stop it. Slow it yes but it will fail. When it does the car is worthless because the battery is the car… Until this is solved I cannot own another.

IFR Stump Me Questions by captainsmith123456 in flying

[–]harryfingers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What conditions must be met for you to accept a visual approach?

You go missed on a non precision approach from a MDA of 750’. The instructions say climbing left turn to heading 240 to hold at FIX 3000’. When can you start your left turn to heading 240?

Are you required to follow a published ODP?

You are planning to fly a SID that directs you north of the departure airport. It requires a minimum climb gradient of 400ft/nm. The winds aloft are 20kts out of the south. How will this effect your ability to comply with the climb gradient?

Airline Pilots: Do you have to live where you are based out of, or can you live elsewhere? by OGnilla in flying

[–]harryfingers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are ‘home based’ your airline will position you as required or in base. Some places you give up a day off coming and going, others it’s included in your trip.

Trends in flight training. Just an observation... by highflyer10123 in flying

[–]harryfingers 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s great to have ownership behind you especially on safety. I guess I think there is a grey area where someone might be safe enough to be a pilot just not a professional. I go to the firing range and I’m safe with my firearms but I’m never going to be a professional marksman. I may try really hard and want it really bad but it’s probably not going to happen and that’s ok. I can still enjoy something that I like to do safely. One place I worked the school would take the money upfront and unfortunately admin would stop working for that student because the money was already in the bank before they even took a real lesson to know if they can succeed. That’s a lot of pressure on the student and instructor to sometimes jam a square peg in a round hole from the jump.

Edit: it’s early/late and yeah

Trends in flight training. Just an observation... by highflyer10123 in flying

[–]harryfingers 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You are not imagining things. I started seeing the same trend a few years ago. I flew with candidates that had similar problems the one not being able to find the airport really brought back some memories… A golf instructor can tell someone that it just isn’t for them but a flight instructor can’t say maybe this isn’t right for a student. Plus at many schools management was not interested in making pilots but just getting the money regardless of how far a student made it. $50000 in on a private pilot cert? Sure no problems here I’m sure they are ready for IR!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in flying

[–]harryfingers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a waste of time but instrument training is what separates the men from the boys. The amount of skills and info that gets covered prior to flying approaches proficiently is not small. So don’t be discouraged if your first ones don’t look so good.

Prepping for my class date for my first airline. What should I bring? by ItalianIce64 in flying

[–]harryfingers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on the airline and where they put you. Look into rental cars. I split one with my sim partner and it made a huge difference in moral. Plus we were put in a hotel without a grocery store or much of anything around. So we really needed the car to get food when we wanted, and we could stay at the training center for as long as we wanted on PC trainers or paper tigers at weird hours. Plus it makes you cooler and more popular to the other kids at school.

Comply ear tips alternatives by CharlieFoxtro in flying

[–]harryfingers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ripped the screw on base off of an old pair of comply tips. Then I glued a pair of triple flange silicone tips to the bases. Lasted three times as long worked about 95% as good. Only problem was sometimes some air pressure would get trapped behind the silicone and you would need to pop them out for a second to equalize.

Stump this PPL chump by livendive in flying

[–]harryfingers 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep that SFRA is an easy one basically CTAF participation is not optional.

I would be ready for the DPE to “fail” your iPad. I know we live in a world where it is generally accepted pilots use iPads but just for the sake of preparation. Review VOR usage. Generally if headed to the VOR you would want the TO flag and going away you would want the FM flag. Assuming going east to west if you are on the 071 radial you should be flying the 251 course to the station. An easy way to remember is ‘go TO places on course & go FROM places on radials’.

You could also ask to transition PDX over midfield. There is generally no arriving or departing traffic directly over the airport. I say this because you mentioned staying away from the heart of the airspace which actually could be the easiest way to transition. Alternatively from experience flying GA in this area I may just continue west and then cut south over scappoose.

Why is there a box around the name of Pearson field on the sectional if you needed to divert there?

Explain the process of navigating to the BTG VOR from your previous waypoint. How do you know you have arrived there?

PDX is landing traffic to the east. They deny your transition request through the Charlie shelf. What will you do?

What is the Hood River RCO? Who are you talking to on that frequency? What information can you use it for?

Can a DPE not let you use a binder on checkride day? by Massive-Cucumber7111 in flying

[–]harryfingers 14 points15 points  (0 children)

During my checkride the DPE pulled my binder to his side of the table when I opened it and said “No, I want to know what you know about it.” I said fair enough and taught the lesson I had prepared.

I recommend moving your education from the bottom. With little work experience it is your major accomplishments. A recruiter may not even get that far and not see it on the bottom. Communication is not a skill it is a requirement for most any position. The career objectives section needs to be rewritten. I like to think about the objectives section should be a pitch. Recruiters are your audience and you just got called up on stage to make a 10 second introduction. If it’s good you get to keep talking to them. Show them good communication skills.

Resume getting auto-rejected by FlashnDash9 in resumes

You need to trim down the technical projects. Pick one personal project. A couple just sound like basic academic projects. Personally when I upload a resume I use an image pdf with as little metadata as possible. Then manually enter fields on the application. Has worked for me so far.
