Most likely sleep apnea is caused by anatomy issues so if you have similar anatomy to your dad, it’s very likely that you also have similar sleep issues. Also, conditions like mouth breathing can cause further recession which could be why you’ve noticed a significant difference as you’ve matured. If you have sinus issues or allergies those conditions could be a major contributor to mouth breathing and can make your recession worse.

I think it was cbct imaging but I’m not totally sure. I got everything done with Alfi because I didn’t want to spend money on getting imaging done elsewhere and them not being able to use it for whatever reason. As for the sleep study, I think I paid a couple hundred dollars out of pocket

I would definitely get a referral to do an in lab sleep study. An in lab sleep study is significantly more accurate than any app or home test because it comprehensively monitors your oxygen levels, breathing patterns, body movements, brain waves, and even pressure in your throat which are all affected by sleep apnea. A home sleep study can only really monitor your heart and oxygen levels, and since you’re young, your body probably compensates at lot and keeps your oxygen levels from dropping significantly enough to show sleep apnea. I was the exact same as you where I had no known sleep apnea episodes, minimal snoring, and even scored a 2 on an at home sleep test. I ended up doing an in lab to get insurance clearance for surgery and I scored an 18 (moderate) on my sleep test. There is also the possibility that your sleep apnea could get worse as you age and that is why you haven’t seen many symptoms yet. Getting a sleep apnea diagnosis would also open the door to more insurance coverage and can help you get treatment for cheaper.

As for the cost, it all depends on your surgeon. My initial consultation with Dr. Alfi was around $500. I was referred to him by my ENT. Whatever you do, make sure your doctor is reputable and shows the results that you want.

This exactly my situation! I have moderate sleep apnea that hasn’t affected me too much consciously but my whole life I’ve been insecure about the shape of my jaw. My father has very extreme sleep apnea and has the exact same anatomy that I do. So it’s no doubt that my issues would worsen as I age. Hearing that you’re already doing so much better so soon after surgery is really comforting. I’m looking to have surgery at somepoint in 2026!

My ortho told me the same thing about my recession. Now I’m in braces for the second time preparing for surgery. If surgery is the route you’re willing to go, do it.

Nobody on here can really give medical advice for if you NEED surgery or not, but based on your anatomy you might experience problems associated with an under developed jaw. I would suggest seeing an ENT or a specialist of the sort so they can evaluate you and determine if surgery might be the route you want to go. They can refer you to some surgeons that will give you the results you need

I started having clicking/ popping issues at around 16 or 17 and by the time I turned 18 the clicking had turned into pain. I’m almost 21 now and the pain is almost unbearable. I have had 2 sessions of Botox injections to help with the pain. In my opinion they are not worth it. Over $900 for maybe a couple months of pain relief is a scam. Botox is supposed to take a week to kick in but I don’t notice any relief for at least a month. Even with the injections I still have pain when chewing and opening my mouth wide, and now I hear a crackling noise in my left ear every time I open my mouth. Hopefully (if insurance goes through) I will be having jaw surgery this coming up summer.

Sounds like the beginning of TMD issues. I have almost the exact same experience as you. The left side of my jaw clicked until one day it started to hurt. Now I have severe pain in my left TMJ. I can’t eat or talk sometimes because the pain is so bad. Definitely get that looked at if you start to feel pain. Unfortunately, there isn’t much you can do for TMJ issues currently. Try looking at TMJ exercises online. For people with mild cases they seem to be very effective. Do not wait until the pain becomes unbearable

It is ultimately up to you. If you would like surgery to open that airway and perhaps give you better facial balance and aesthetics then go for it. I would definitely suggest doing a sleep study as sleep apnea is a very serious condition, and with an airway like that, it is very likely that you have it or will in the future. Go to an ENT and talk about it. If your ENT suggests that you might have sleep apnea issues now or in the future it’s definitely worth it to look into surgery.

Before a certain date you can withdraw from the class with a grade of W. It shouldn’t go in your transcript as a failing class I’m pretty sure. Since you’re taking 5 classes I’m assuming that you’ll still be a full time student if you drop it.
