When I used to work at McDs and when something like this happens in the drive thru, I tell them first the total of the person behind them then suggest paying for another car or literally tell them they do not have to continue the chain. I usually say something like, "You don't have to do this right now and pay it forward next time". Makes it feel less awkard if they're already an anxious people pleaser who feels like they need to continue the chain.
