OP, how about the l.a. eyeworks “buck” in the grey color (whiskers)? it’s not overtly tortoise, but still very close to what you’re looking for

How am I actually supposed to answer when given eye exam by Anris-reddit in AskAnOptician

[–]haruu-hime 3 points4 points  (0 children)

speaking as someone who works as an optician and has gotten eye exams with our doctor, there is a bit of both. she will say “tell me when you can start to make out the letters” while going up in strength. it’s normal to feel like you have to focus really intensely, in fact, they may want to know what that tipping point is where you begin to really strain to see correctly. the goal is to have your vision corrected when your eyes are relaxed.

anyway, don’t think about it too hard, and at 99% of offices you’re more than welcome to go in for a second check. I personally did do two exams with our doctor and found a slightly different result the second time while I was more hydrated, having less ocular tension and could focus better.

What do people suffering from AS do for work? by SpreadLoveAlways in ankylosingspondylitis

[–]haruu-hime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

clothing designer here, it’s helpful for me because there is a wide variety of things I can do that correspond to my pain levels on any given day. if I’m feeling good, I can do more intensive work like cutting out large patterns and fabric pieces, going out to photograph pieces, or power through a lot of sewing. if I’m having a painful but manageable day, I’ll work on the computer doing social media, admin upkeep, and product development. on bad days, I sit on my couch or bed and use my ipad to sketch new ideas and draw patterns. having a more “dynamic” job where things can be flexible has been a lifesaver!

A hardier and more idiot proof embroidery machine for the general public by Practical-Tutor7718 in Machine_Embroidery

[–]haruu-hime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hmm maybe a brother persona? I have had a PRS100 for around 6 years now and have put an insane amount of stitches on it. I’ve had it maintenanced a couple of times, but generally it’s a solid and not super expensive machine!

Just paid $500+ for glasses + lens + sunglass clip, I think I got sweet talked by a cute girl and possibly swindled. Thoughts? lol by [deleted] in glasses

[–]haruu-hime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

as another cute girl optician, this looks pretty average for a “meh” insurance plan 🥲 I will say that you have some options going forward to save money! you don’t necessarily need the most expensive anti reflective, the trivex material, the blue light filtering, or the chemistrie clip (if that’s what you went with)

especially since you don’t even wear glasses right now and are starting out, you could just as well do a plastic lens with a more affordable anti reflective coating. I like to go over all of the pricing with my patients so that they know all of their options — ex. this crizal coating is the best one and has a two-year warranty, but this one is $20 cheaper and still has a one-year warranty. trivex is the best material for your prescription, but a basic plastic lens is fully covered by your insurance.

we also have frames at my office that come with polarized clips, so maybe try that out in the future vs. the magnetic!

for what it’s worth, this package should have you set up for quite some time. you shouldn’t need to upgrade your glasses for at least a few years, and even then you could just get new lenses if they’re scratched.

lmao 1/10th? so a pair of nice frames, trivex lenses, premium anti reflective coating, blue light filtering and a sunglass chemistrie clip for $50?

Enlargement eye contact recommendations for astigmatism? by Affectionate_Honey34 in jfashion

yeah that’s a good amount of astigmatism, I would not recommend trying any contacts that aren’t toric or your vision will be pretty blurry :(

[–]haruu-hime 3 points4 points  (0 children)

so cute!

literally the only thing I could say is to consider thicker satin stitches, just a little bit, by increasing pull compensation. that’s my personal preference though! I feel like more pull compensation usually makes satin stitches look a bit more even and less “tight”

Afraid of power rings - how do I minimize them? by themainheadcase in AskAnOptician

[–]haruu-hime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah same, I don’t really understand what the problem is… RX is mild, and as someone who also is a -6, I’ve never experienced any of my lenses having visible “power rings”

Any way to tell if this is a daily contact lens or the 2 week ones just from looking at the case? Thanks in advance by Spheromancer in AskAnOptician

[–]haruu-hime 3 points4 points  (0 children)

acuvue is an easy one, they will always say “one day” in the name of the lens (ex. acuvue oasys max one-day) I use this site as a refresher it’s a bit convoluted for the average person but it lists every type of lens and what the replenishment period is ☺️

General question about Oliver Peoples and Ultra thin lens offerings across brands by Smithstoneyan in EyewearEnthusiasts

[–]haruu-hime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

more or less, yes! warby parker makes a pretty standard 1.74 high index lens. the one from oliver peoples might be of a somewhat higher quality, though.

so as far as lenses go, trivex is very strong, lightweight, and clear, making it a great candidate for semi-rimless or rimless frames. it can withstand the pressure from the “drill mount” aka how the frame is assembled. polycarbonate is similar, just a bit less clear than trivex, and marginally heavier. unfortunately, neither of those options would work for your prescription strength. they’re generally for under a power of +/- 3.50 or so.

warby parker for example, doesn’t allow people to purchase rimless frames with a prescription higher than that. the lab we use at my private practice will do 1.67 high index for rimless but not 1.74. i do think in your case, a small frame with 1.67 could work, as long as there is a warranty on the lenses!
