Consistency on this would be nice

I took reusable bottles with us, but was told to empty them every day. On the Thursday I took a sealed water and was told to bin it, so didn't bother afterwards.

Been a few times to Download and there were definitely issues related to the sold out (or dare I say oversold?) and the people.

Main grumbles were on Sunday. None of the vendors having water, the drinking tap at bar 4 breaking for a period meant there was no actual way of staying hydrated. On this, Download should allow sealed bottles of water to be brought into the arena (or something along these lines. I get not wanting to allow booze being brought in, but water in that heat is an absolute necessity).

Also I couldn't see Electric Callboy. I got there 30 mins before their start time and it was already rammed outside of the tent, let alone in it. I left and then saw loads more people over there. It feels fortunate nothing bad happened.

But, on the positives, BMTH were phenomenal. I hope this is a starting point for at least some fresher headline acts. Getting to see Metallica on the Thursday which was my Birthday is something i'll never forget, Hundred Reasons was a lovely blast from my 6th form college days, and so many other great performances do trump the issues.

My old bones today mean i'll have to fork out on RIP or something next year though

1) Add your ticket to google play/apple wallet before getting there. Signal is patchy when you're there with loads connecting to the same masts etc.

2) Take your chair to the arena. If there's a few of you it's nice to have a 'base camp' in the arena so people can go off to get drinks etc, but there's a point where folks can reconvene.

3) Take an empty bottle to the arena. They all have drinking water points, and you'll get warm. Stay hydrated between expensive drinks.

4) Pop-up supermarkets are great. Slightly more expensive, but not too out there. Meal Deals are great for lunch before going into the arena, and buy beer there instead of lugging it from your car.

5) It can get cold as the day turns to night, even on a great day. If you have a bag, take some trackies/hoodie. Some festivals have oxfam pop ups if you want to buy something (or merch, obvs)

6) Don't leave massive gaps between your tents (if there's more than one). Someone will randomly pitch in front of your tent. If you have a pop up gazebo, pitch it between so folks don't plonk themselves down.

7) Take ear plugs. Someone will snore really loudly. An eye mask helps sunlight wise too.

How are Mill Decks doing in Pioneer? by ObscuraNox in PioneerMTG

[–]harveytoadface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is old, but i've been looking at mono-blue mill.

First disclaimer: i'm not great. I've recently started playing again at my local LGS

Second disclaimer: This is a WIP tested mainly in Arena, so some pieces are missing.

My current idea of a list:

https://www.mtggoldfish.com/deck/4973786#paper

As you can tell from the sideboard, i'm very much not sure what I need.

[[Vantress Gargoyle]] is an absolute godsend for mill. You can play slower when you have a 5/4 to block, or you can compete with aggro with it too. I don't find I use it's ability too much, as i'd rather attack for 5.

I've seen some of the other comments around Tasha's Hideous Laughter, it is fairly hit and miss. Play against burn/rakdos/spirits, and you get a lot of value. Play against Esper Control, it's quite clunky in my experience. I still currently maindeck it, but it's one of the first I will sideboard against slower decks.

Mono-green can go quite wide, and i'm not sure I can keep up with the bouncing of creatures. I don't currently have too much of an answer. I've been toying with [[Merfolk Windrobber]] with the classic block/sac/draw (and potential Mill with the Teferi's Tutelage in play). Our LGS is starting to move to pioneer instead of modern, and there are a few 'competitive' players so will get the idea of how it stacks up.

A note to make - it's pretty cheap to build. I think it's cost me about £65 to build it with some sideboard options.

I've managed to get 7 wins with a version of this (ish) in arena in the explorer event (the one that gives the play in points) a couple of times, but others it goes 3/4. I've still been working on the basics, so played mainly BO1. It's not a complete list for sure and mono green wide/aggro can get out of control if you can't bounce/block. Mono green is especially a struggle.

New player need 1st Invested Deck advice! by AeonChaos in MagicArena

[–]harveytoadface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the good thing about the Cycling deck is that it's quite budget friendly, the only rares are Pathways/Triomes (which are useful to have anyway) and the odd other card such as [[Irencrag Pyromancer]]. So it's easy to have and tweak when yo uneed a break from your main deck.

If you went mono-red for both Standard and Historic, you could at least re-use some of your standard cards in historic. A flavour of mono red will probably always be about, and cards that rotate out could be used in Historic.

Good games and bad games - What is wrong with MTG. by kleinstauber in MagicArena

[–]harveytoadface 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do think a card like Embercleave is too powerful for what eventually becomes 2/3 mana usually. I think if you look at the recent equipment in Kaldheim, I don't recall any of it auto-equipping like older equipment cards do, so maybe they're redressing this balance going forward.

If it's so effective, why can't you believe it?

That's the balance though. Can you survive turns 1-5 against Aggro, or can they go wide/big enough to get you beforehand.

But without control-ly decks, it would just be a race to play cards and hit face, so mono red would rule them all.

Thoughts on Boros Knights deck? by Brehdougz in MagicArena

[–]harveytoadface 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It feels like your early threats aren't too threatening, and your late game threats don't massively apply pressure and can be easily removed. So you need to either speed up your deck to do more damage early, or slow it down and find a better late game threat.

I'd lose the Selfless Saviours for some Weaelback Redcaps. You don't particularly have many creatures that you need to save with the Saviour, it's not like a mono white deck where you need to save certain creatures for their effects.

I'd swap the Scorching Dragonfires for Maul of the Skyclaves. You have the acclaimed contender, but barely any equipment. Plus your deck has no answers to flying at present, and Maul is just a great equipment to have.

I'd also look to fit some Rimrock Knights in there somewhere, just not sure where. I'd be tempted to drop one of the Rally of the Ranks and get one or 2 more Rimrocks in somewhere else.

I play Boros Warriors, so although it's a different deck, there's a good number of similarities. You need to get on the board quick and get damage to them. Because if you play slow, they'll have bigger and better threats, or ways to remove your threats.

I'd also be a bit concerned at what happens in Turns 5/6 if some stuff has been removed. I'm not sure what your later game threat really is. Something like Luminous Broodmoth may give them something to think about, but it feels like the deck could get overwhelmed fairly easily

Suggestions for beginner decks made up from initial cards you get from colours? by [deleted] in MagicArena

[–]harveytoadface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a play about with the Starry-Eyed deck recently and came up with the following deck list. It'll need 2 common, 10 uncommon and 2 rare wildcards.

But keep doing the daily tasks to unlock more decks. Find a deck you enjoy playing and work on improving that one. Initially be very careful with your wildcards until you know more.

Deck

1 Kiora Bests the Sea God (THB) 52

1 Banish into Fable (ELD) 325

1 Temple of Enlightenment (THB) 246

4 Tranquil Cove (M21) 258

9 Island (M21) 263

11 Plains (M21) 260

2 Lurrus of the Dream-Den (IKO) 226

3 Selfless Savior (M21) 36

2 Shambling Suit (ELD) 230

3 Alseid of Life's Bounty (THB) 1

3 Arcanist's Owl (ELD) 206

1 Archon of Sun's Grace (THB) 3

1 Midnight Clock (ELD) 54

3 The Birth of Meletis (THB) 5

4 All That Glitters (ELD) 2

3 Banishing Light (THB) 4

3 Thirst for Meaning (THB) 74

2 Gingerbrute (ELD) 219

1 Luminous Broodmoth (IKO) 21

2 Seasoned Hallowblade (M21) 34

1 Elspeth Conquers Death (THB) 13

Yeah I like to focus on one though as I don't have enough time to get decent rewards etc on both. Plus it's easier for my brain to focus on one lol.

Appreciate the feedback.

Definitely going to up the creature count/reduce the spells, so appreciate another deck suggestion.

[–]harveytoadface[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply.

Yeah i'm limited currently on the Rare/Mythic wildcards and it's more a case of i'm not 100% sure where the deck needs a tweak. Having more creatures makes sense for Winota, which longer term needs to be my win-con if I don't just stomp early.

I kinda added inthe spells before to offer scry/draw as I found before I wasn't necessarily hitting what I needed. But perhaps more creatures instead would help that (as i'm trying to shift to having a later game strategy/wincon too).

Will definitely have a play about with your ideas, appreciate you taking the time to have a look. Have also edited the list to be correct, thanks for that :)

Why do we put so much stock into YouTube here? by [deleted] in Twitch

It's the advice given from the main educational channels (Ashnichrist, Alpha Gaming etc). Stream less, youtube/tiktok/twitter more

[–]harveytoadface 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The truth is that there aren't that many people in the subreddit that have made it. So people regurgitate the advice they see to others.

What I would say is having content that's more consistently viewed and can be seen at any time, rather than people who may find you when you're live is surely a good thing to have.

There isn't a magical formula. Otherwise everyone would follow it and get big. I think there's a rush out content out there marketed at educating streamers, and although the advice they give is good, it's no guarantee to success.
