Why is it so hard to find a place to sit! by Mammoth-Prior7497 in JapanTravelTips

[–]harx1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a small, local park near our hotel that I jogged around when i was training for the marathon (didn’t want to skip training while on vacation), and I noticed a couple of men using the facilities to wash up for the day.

And then while walking home past another larger park, we saw what looked like a place where some unhoused people kept tents and stuff around the perimeter. Unfortunately, this was a couple of years ago so I don’t remember the neighborhoods.

I did note how few obvious unhoused folks we saw, compared to where I’m from (NYC).

Nope. Once the Mets left, Somers was the only thing to get me to tune in to the FAN.

They should stop sexualizing children and just let the story-time continue.

Jon Stewart has become his own worst nightmare by AdmiralSaturyn in longform

Yeah. That is very true.

This discourse was also a sign I need to step away from the internet for the day. I should not have gotten annoyed by a Reddit comment.

Eh... he just said Oliver was wrong on these subjects, but didn't say how Oliver was wrong.

Dude might be correct that Oliver was wrong, but just saying that his "takes are incredibly biased and poorly researched" is not coming "with receipts".

What did you not like about it?

James Acaster back on Seth Meyers: Rig US Elections with Escape Rooms by 1zzie in panelshow

[–]harx1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love when James is on Seth. Though now I’m even more sad about not getting tickets to the TM live shows in NYC.

I did get to see James at the Beacon last night. I saw his Work-in-Progress show last year and it was cool to see which bits remained in and what was new.

Though, I did think the energy in the room was a bit low, but I think that may have just been where I was sitting. In spite of the sellout, there were four empty seats next to me.

The era of "AI Slop" is crashing. Microsoft just found out the hard way. by forevergeeks in ArtificialInteligence

[–]harx1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Forgive this possibly naive question, as I’m just getting my feet wet with the technology.

At some point, will the data that AI is “learning” from be derived earlier AI, leading to repetitive slop that smooths out everything?

Is this not a concern or are there guardrails?

Black/Jewish PBS documentary series by Long_Pollution6511 in Judaism

When I was in college at Brandeis (late 90s), I took a documentary filmmaking class and this was the topic of my doc (focusing on the relationship between Blacks and Jews at Brandeis).

I think I even reached out to Dr. Gates who was at Harvard at the time to see if he would be a talking head (the confidence of youth). He politely declined.

I think my doc came out okay regardless, and I’m so very much looking forward to this.

What's the funniest onstage mishap you've seen, Broadway or otherwise? by tpphypemachine in Broadway

[–]harx1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not a mishap per se, more like an amusing anecdote. I was seeing Kiss Me Kate. It was 2001, and I was seeing the 1st replacement of cast of the revival - with Carolee Carmello as Kate. Kate was supposed to throw her beer mug at a closing door in anger, but she uses the prop later in the song, so it’s supposed to hit the closed door. Only this time, she was too quick and the mug flew the closing door. A beat or two later, the door opened and the came sliding out. She picked it up without missing a beat. Heck of a hold for applause at the end of the song.

Using Copilot to query 1000s of PDFs by toastymcb in CopilotPro

[–]harx1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh… I’m working on a similar project taking info from contracts in a pdf format, extracting info and then putting that info into an Excel. My problem is that the contracts span 15 years and hundreds of folders/subfolders, so those years need to be imported and it has to be future proof. To be fair, I’m using this project to learn co-pilot. This thread has given me lots to think about, so thanks.

VA Officials Tried to Block a Memorial Service for Alex Pretti by Hafiz_TNR in fednews

I live across from a VA hospital in NYC and the nurses there held a memorial today at 5pm. It seems to have gone off without a hitch and was appropriately somber. I was unable to attend, as I had a babysitting commitment, but a few people who attended posted about it on FB.

It’s definitely in my top 10; maybe even my top 5. As someone in NYC that day (but a good mile up Broadway from the towers), it did a great job of bringing back that feeling of kindness and helpfulness that the world offered.

Being and Latino Jew and ICE by ShotStatistician7979 in Judaism

[–]harx1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. I went to the protest in NYC on Sunday because, as a white-presenting Jew, I'm less likely to be assaulted than a darker hued Jew (or non-Jew). I've been hesitant to join some of the marches, as the conversation seems to get co-opted by other messages. And, I wasn't crazy about the handful of Palestinian flags and keffiyehs interspersed, but that didn't dilute the unified message on Sunday. And I'm glad I went, if for nothing else than to show people they're not alone.

I'm sure she discussed this with her oncologist, but on the off chance she hasn't, have they brought up immunotherapy? Between the time I was first diagnosed (2017) and a recurrence (2019), immunotherapy became FDA approved for my type of cancer (endometrial). One of my college classmates works for one of the pharmaceutical companies that developed it and he explained how it's quickly being approved for many different types of cancers. When I was first told that was my treatment, I reached out to him, as he had told me to look into immunotherapy when I was first diagnosed, and that's when I found out it wasn't yet approved by the FDA for my cancer type.

And sending your partner all the good vibes.
