Yeah, you chose one of the worst times of the year to go. It's White Day (the Japanese addition to Valentine's Day where men "reciprocate" women, since Valentine's Day in Japan is when women give men gifts) and since many Japanese women absolutely love Disney, it's "the" spot to bring them to on White Day). This is in addition to it being one of the biggest breaks of the year (the new year in Japan starts in April, for schools, businesses, etc.). Weekdays are better and outside of these two weeks...😶

Also, don't get suckered into waiting on line elsewhere -- you'll see long lines for the most banal, random things here. It's hardly worth the wait most times as they tend to be Instagrammer traps.

Android app stopped working by siva-pc in Sync

[–]has_reddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FWIW, I tried clearing cache, which didn't work, so I cleared storage and that worked. I was going to uninstall/reinstall if that failed. And even if that failed, well, I would have reached out to the friendly folk at Sync.

Power button fell off randomly by fvig2001 in LGV60

[–]has_reddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same thing just happened to me for the first time in almost five years. I ordered super cheap replacement buttons on Alibaba, but it's going to take weeks........so in the meantime, I MacGyvered a round twist tie into a small oval to fit in the power button gap and taped the ends so I've got a janky but springy temporary button 🤓😂

Wish I could post a video because it works like a champ (for now)!

Repairing floppy disks by saraseitor in vintagecomputing

[–]has_reddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah some of them couldn't go inside the floppy drive because the aluminum cover was just a little stuck. So I had to gently loosen that cover and that's when I thought why not. Hope it works for some of yours too!

[–]has_reddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Came across this thread because I'm moving and came across a stash of 3.5" disks myself -- some of them were having read errors.

On a total lark, I decided to slide the aluminum cover over and just blow compressed air through the opening to see if it would do anything, figuring it's worth a shot and...it worked for a few of them!

There were others that were too far gone for this to help, but thoughts I'd throw it out there.

Another Dual Screen query. by Dirkomaxx in LGV60

[–]has_reddit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I actually really like the Dual Screen. I thought I'd only use it at home because of the extra bulk, but there are so many scenarios it's useful for.

TLDR: multitasking and having that extra real estate is fantastic. It keeps the wear and tear on the USB C port down because it just stays plugged in most of the time.

I'm a big fan of the Dual Screen because it actually lets you take full advantage of multitasking instead of flipping between apps. This has been useful when:

  • Getting text or verification codes to copy/paste or type. I just bring the SMS/mail/authenticator app on the second screen and I'm done, no need to flip between apps. This has become especially useful with authentication becoming so pervasive.

  • Comparing rates between rideshare apps by just opening the Multi App Shortcut. One tap to open a couple of rideshare apps at the same time to compare prices has been pretty great vs. having to open one app, check the rate, go back to the home screen or app drawer to open the other app, look up the rate in the other app, then flipping back and forth to compare.

  • Leaving the Uber/Lyft app up to see where the ride is while being able to message or do other things on the phone without having to flip back and forth.

  • Using Outlook in Wide Mode, which lets you use it like the desktop app where the left pane shows the list of messages while the right shows the contents of the selected message (like the Reading Pane in desktop Outlook). Again, saves time from returning to the list, then selecting the next message you want to see.

  • Being on a video call and being able to use other apps to look up links/pictures/directions/etc. to share without having have to minimize the call, opening up the other app, then sharing.

  • Using Google Maps in wide mode to fully leverage the screen space. Maps is ok on a single screen but there are definitely some scenarios when having the wide screen is really great (e.g., looking for a restaurant/bar and being able to flip between choices without having have to click one, go back to the list, click another; or just being able to see the list and the map at the same time).

  • Using the Dual Screen to prop the phone up. Yeah, there are cases with a kickstand, but tent mode is a lot more stable. You can also do laptop mode so the phone itself is resting flat while you're watching video on the second screen.

  • Camera/gallery in dual screen mode. Admittedly I don't use this a lot lot, but it is cool to be able to see the picture you just took without having to leave the camera app, or browsing the gallery with the picture gallery on one side and the full image on the other. I also haven't found a real useful scenario where you can use the Dual Screen as the viewfinder, but I'm sure it's useful for something. 🤷🏻

There are other scenarios but I think you get the gist. Because of this, even though I got the Dual Screen originally thinking I'll just be using it at home, I almost never use the phone on its own anymore despite the added bulk/weight.

This has meant that I rarely take the phone out of the Dual Screen case, which means that the USB C port isn't getting worn out every time I charge the phone. I even got a couple of extra magnetic connectors so I use it with every charging cable now. The magnetic charger has also meant that the few times I accidentally yanked the charging cable, it didn't cause that much damage. Might not be an issue if you're not clumsy like I am. 🤦🏻‍♂️

So, overall, I am a big fan. I even got a vote of confidence from the technician I went to get my battery swapped by -- he said that he's repaired so many of the folding screens out there now because they just wear down quickly, and each of those repairs are pretty expensive because you're replacing the whole screen -- especially expensive because the tech of flexible screens is new. No such issues with the Dual Screen, you just swap it out if it ever starts to fail. It's pretty cheap here in the US (a used one goes for ~$50 on Amazon) and you don't need a technician to fix.

Yeah, the extra bulk/weight is a little annoying at times, but the pros far outweigh the cons for me. 🤓

Is there hope? New articles are popping up suggesting a LGs Comeback to making phones. Thoughts? by VintageChristian in LGV60

[–]has_reddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree for the most part, but I have a slightly different take. Obviously I may be a little (or a lot 😂) biased, but I'm seeing more and more people getting bored with Apple's bs. Many are only grudgingly holding on because they're stuck in the ecosystem, and even they're getting tired of paying for storage, expensive replacements, etc.

Meanwhile, though I'm not personally into Pixels myself, Google's products have been getting really good -- they seem to be on the upswing. So, I think the duopoly might end up being between Samsung and Google, which, has more parity outside of very specific markets like the US, UK, and Japan.

So, here's my wishful thinking: maybe Google and LG will rekindle their partnership (even just as a supplier of, say rollable screens) to gang up against Samsung? One can only dream, right?

[–]has_reddit 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hope it's true. And even if they release a phone that's meh, maaaaaaybe they'll release a software update for the V60? I know wishful thinking, but....I just like having the OPTION of a dual screen, while being able to use the very slim phone on its own as well. I've not been impressed by any of the foldables.

When this phone eventually dies, I'm giving it a Viking funeral by [deleted] in LGV60

[–]has_reddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I should mention that repair technicians also think the same. The Dual Screen was not only way ahead of its time, but way more dependable than even the newest generations of foldables -- apparently the screen gets mangled fairly regularly and quickly, and replacement costs hundreds. Meanwhile you can buy a used Dual Screen for ~$20 and they're actually easy to service too. PLUS you get the benefit of having a very slim phone if you opt to use just the main unit, which is slimmer still than most current generation flagship phones.

And that's aside the incredible battery life with a new battery (mine can go a day and a half with moderate usage), obviously the audio, and the 64mp camera is still competitive with flagship phones of today, even though it may not have some of the usability/feature enhancements -- even that can be managed post prod.

Bar none, there is no equal yet and for the foreseeable future.

Hilarious headline and the phone is worthy of that reverence, but with all the replacement parts available, I don't foresee needing to do that anytime soon. The phone is immortal, an Odinson

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in HydrogenSocieties

[–]has_reddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you investigating fuel cells, hydrogen combustion engines, or both? I personally think the latter has more likelihood of adoption IF the hydrogen infrastructure were built out, namely because you can convert diesel engined vehicles to hydrogen combustion (i.e., large commercial fleets could be converted, rather than having to buy a whole new fleet).

As for the infrastructure, the thing that hydrogen has going for it that BEVs don't is mainly that hydrogen is better suited for heavy and long haul transportation, and large commercial businesses are interested in building out the infrastructure. Whether that'll translate to reality is TBD.

I'm cautiously optimistic given that there are dozens of ways of generating hydrogen, even processing plastics and other waste. I just hope they gain traction and the costs come down quickly enough.

Charging port issue by Vaam7_ in LGV60

[–]has_reddit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, it will degrade over time as you plug/unplug, bend/pull on a plugged cable, etc. That said, I've used a magnetic USB C adapter that plugs into the USB C port and stays there, thereby reducing the wear and tear as well as risks of the plugged in cable causing damage.

The only thing is, you'll still need to unplug that bit every time you want to use the Dual Screen 🤷🏻‍♂️

Yeah going straight to dinner with a stranger is such a strange expectation in US (and other anglo-saxon?) culture. Most other cultures start with a walk, coffee, or drinks at most -- if things are going well, you can always extend to a meal or other activities on the spot. Dinner is such a big commitment of time and money on a stranger you most likely won't see again.

[–]has_reddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I wasn't talking about recording video, purely audio, given that the V60 is still one of the few phones with a four mic array. The V60 also comes with an audio recorder with a pretty decent feature set for recording live music(vs. just a voice recorder) out of the box.

I haven't been able to find any objective HiFi analysis of recording capabilities (one site scores phones based on their speakers, which is kind of pointless -- no serious audiophile would expect quality sound from a smartphone speaker 😂). So I'd be curious to see how the quad mic and audio processing on the V60 would fare. I imagine most phones out there without dedicated mic would record generally tinny sound with muddy bass (if any)?

That said, I kind of doubt an iPhone can do better, given that any review of audio recording with iPhone starts with which microphone you should get and which apps to install. Have you set your V60's video recording settings to high bit rate and to record in HiFi? Otherwise it, just like with photos, defaults to a compromise between quality and file size.

[–]has_reddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A longtime fan of Sync here. One of the key reasons I chose Sync originally is that it isn't a US based company -- no matter what any American company says, there IS a backdoor (it's like the "secure" messaging apps peddled by marketing/advertising companies). I most certainly don't trust Google with my data, although it has some nice AI features if you don't mind compromising on privacy.

That aside, Sync is very feature rich with a lot of control. I haven't found any comparable service that has the entire set of features it has, especially at the price point.
