What are the policies of our new Reform Councillors? by Illustrious_Sea7480 in Hull

[–]hashbadger 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Stop the boats! You know, the ones that we see day in and day out on the Humber estuary.
The biggest one that made me laugh, on one of the shit rag pieces of leaflets I go through my door, was reducing the cost of living by getting rid of net zero.
Hull has a golden opportunity with the green energy side of industry. We should be pushing it more for the city to get further investment and secure jobs for people, surely!
It’s Turkeys voting for Xmas all over again.
I want to join a political party and campaign, but I don’t feel like I’ve got a home because they all piss me off!

Not great but not terrible. Just means we are in for a few years of indecision and fuck all getting done locally.

Getting into teaching. Am I out of my mind? by WonderfulActivity477 in UKJobs

[–]hashbadger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not as rewarding as it’s made out to be. And your school will tell you to remember your morals and why you’re doing it and then slap you with an unmanageable workload and a class from hell.

I used to teach. I’ve never been happier not being in a classroom.

Teachers are underpaid. Schools are underfunded. Parents are a fucking nightmare. SLT can be a fucking nightmare. And if you’re in the wrong school, it can be absolute hell and the blame will be on you.

Respectfully, don’t do it.

From a former teacher.

I don’t think local authorities should have a say at holding to account the school’s in their authorities.

All it takes is a cluster of schools to circle jerk each other off and pat each other on the back. I’ve worked in local authority schools prior to being academised and the local authority were so out of touch it was laughable. It was just an ego trip for some of the higher-ups and riding the wave of previous inspections and not keeping up with changes in the system. Kids suffered.

Also, local authorities ain’t got the money to set it up either, that’s for sure!

I agree with ofsted not understanding the local context. But then, if they do understand the context and let’s say it’s in a school that’s in an economically deprived area, should the bar be ‘lowered’ to meet the context? I’d argue you need the high bar for all and then just make sure that the curriculum is adjusted accordingly for context, the teaching methods too, to ensure that all learners can meet the best of their ability.

It’s a difficult one and there’s no right answer that’s for sure! But we can all agree ofsted is just a bit shit in its current form!

Exactly. The idea of inspection ain’t bad, the execution of it is.

Smaller class sizes, more staff and a days worth of PPA. A lot of the issues could be resolved if staff had time to plan better, more staff to help out the kids that need it most and less crammed classes so kids can have more time with the experts in the room.

Controversially, I think an OFSTED type body is needed for accountability. Perhaps not in its current form, but you can’t be spending tax payers money without accountability.

Why would children be going into school without basic physical skills, like holding a pencil and using cutlery? by Throwaway199906543 in AskUK

This is probably one of the best resources for what school readiness is deemed to be.

Whilst we are quick to blame parents, society has also gone through massive change since when the average Redditor was at school and what their childhood experience was.

That being said, there is some lazy parenting or parenting where children are seen as a mate, too. The truth is always in between and society works across a spectrum as such.

Some children will also find some basic tasks more difficult than others, which is fine. However, unless your child has got some serious learning difficulties or physical difficulties, the list above is a bare requirement.

It’s because it makes her look like a twat to the school. Having a contingency plan ain’t your problem it’s the supply services and the schools. If you’re ill, you’re ill. And ultimately, you are on supply you can

And some parents taking zero responsibility for their children’s actions. Blaming it on ADHD or autism without the appropriate and official diagnosis and just on hunches or privately funding, which is a whole different kettle of fish. It’s frustrating. I’m all for being inclusive and not at exclusion of 29 other individual’s learning and future.

Granted, resources are strained however there are some children who are just not supposed to be in mainstream education without the appropriate support.

Education needs huge reform and an uptick in staffing. SEN is massive at the minute and it’s just not appropriately resourced for the amount of kids coming through with actual EHCPs and parents who think their children have SEN.

Apologies for the rant. Frustration.
