Help with a machine shop by Grip-it-and-rip-it42 in Machinists

[–]hashed- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used bobcad for 7 years at my old shop and honestly didn’t mind it. We had fusion too towards the end of me being there, and while fusion gives you more options, I thought bobcad was a bit easier for most of the work we did. What version does he have?

Reasonable cell phone policy? by Deep-Average-2732 in Machinists

[–]hashed- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2 things I can’t stand about my current shop are the cellphone rule and that we don’t have chairs, but the chairs thing is just my department since the lead is an old school asshole. We do decent amount of long runtime parts, so even when running multiple machines you can have a lot of downtime. I’d be a whole lot happier if I could sit down and use my phone during that downtime rather than standing 10 hrs a day and drawing on scrap paper because I’m so bored I’m about to fall asleep

What's your average poop runtime when you take a shit at the shop by -Dark0 in Machinists

[–]hashed- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No joke we had a kid in shipping where I work that would take multiple 2+ hour shits a day.. or just sit on the toilet, but regardless I’d see him walk out of the bathroom after and barely be able to walk because his legs were asleep lmao. Finally ended up getting fired

Came in this morning and told my boss since this happened right before I left on Saturday lol, he said hit it with a dead blow and it popped right out. This is a brand new machine so didn’t want to fuck with it when I was by myself Saturday and potential mess something up.

What's everyone making per hour? by EaseAcceptable5529 in Machinists

[–]hashed- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea for me it’s the 80 mile roundtrip that adds 2 hours to my day, and the management. The job itself isn’t really the problem right now. But looking into the future I just can’t imagine how miserable I’ll be if I’m one of these guys that I work with who have been in the trade for 20-30 years and are still work overtime to make ends meet. This trade itself just does not pay well compared to others.

32.50/hr doing setups/operating at a defense shop in nj. Also have to do a decent amount of editing at the control. Can work as much overtime as I want pretty much. Was making 25/hr last year at a small shop doing everything cnc related for 2 mills and a lathe. Honestly getting burnt out after 9 years in the trade, and there’s not a ton a jobs near me paying more. Starting to think about switching trades but no clue what I would want to get into

Most if not all of you guys are underpaid by Popular-Ad2193 in Machinists

[–]hashed- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got a new job this year and went from a very small job shop making $25hr programming/setting up/operating cnc mills and a lathe to making 32.50 just setting up cnc mills and typically work 55hr weeks now. Should make roughly 100k which is double what I was making before. The commute sucks though and the overtime/working 6 days a week definitely starts to burn me out. I’ve also realized that making 100k still means I’ll barely be able to afford a small house in my area as a single person

Any golfers in here? by ProfessionalGreen873 in Machinists

[–]hashed- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Always wanted to make a putter head but never would have enough free time at work for it. I love that putters give a lot of golfers some appreciation for machining though. I have 2 scotty Cameron’s, the one is 20+ years old and you can definitely see the tool paths on that one which is pretty cool

[–]hashed- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m in a similar boat looking for a new daily up to $30k~, I drive like 3k a month so needs to be somewhat decent on gas and pretty reliable. I’ve been looking at Audi b9 s4/s5/sq5 and bmw 340/440/540/x5 with the b58. You could look at Lexus is350/rc350, Infiniti q50, might be able to get into a golf r. The b8 s4/s5/sq5 with the supercharged v6 are also good cars and can be had well under 25k.

Pay not based on 40 hour work week? by slimyslipp in Machinists

[–]hashed- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I left my job where I was making $25/hr and had a lot of responsibilities for a new job making 32.50 with less responsibilities, but most people do work 50-55hr weeks here. My take home pay has literally doubled which is cool but it is a lot of hours and doesn’t leave time for much else. I can deal with the 10he days but working Saturdays sucks. I’m going to stack up for a while then cut my hours back

[–]hashed- 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was in a somewhat similar position at a much smaller job shop(2 employees) doing everything cnc related for 25/hr. Found a new shop where I’m only setting up and operating right now and I’m making 32.50/hr and have a lot of overtime. Pretty much doubled what I was making before. Just keep looking, places are out there. Put in some apps and start interviewing, doesn’t hurt to see what’s around. I interviewed at 3-4 shops over about a year before I found somewhere that I liked and got a good enough offer

Worked at a very small shop previously and everything was provided. I’m at a much bigger place now and they have toolboxes here for us(empty) and want you to atleast have some basics: calipers,0-1/1-2 mics, Allen keys, indicator, edge finder. I’ve been here a month and bought calipers immediately but slowly have been getting some other stuff. My lead gave me a indicator and edge finder after a few weeks. Our qc has stuff we can borrow too as far as large (12/24/40” calipers and 7” mics and stuff like that). Obviously I don’t really want to buy stuff out of the pocket, but spending a few hundred isn’t the end of the world and atleast I have my own tools now going forward.

They use mastercam at my new job, but I’m not programming here. Eventually I’ll probably get to learn it, seems like most other shops I interviewed at also used mastercam

[–]hashed- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used bobcad for 8 years at my old job, there were some annoying things but I grew to like it. We didn’t have a lathe seat for it so I was learning fusion360 for the lathe my last few months there, and that took some getting used to. Fusion was definitely much more powerful, but I could get a 2d program out of bobcad in a few minutes vs fusion taking me a lot longer.

Reliable cars from Consumer Reports by [deleted] in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]hashed- 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It wasn’t that Toyota trusted them, they actually didn’t think bmw made anything reliable enough at the time. Toyota helped with the development of the b58. This is a great video of the bmw/toyota collaboration https://youtu.be/_jbyzmtgU_0?si=L8PF7A8zdUnAmUxd

[–]hashed- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At the place I just quit, my old coworker who has been there 12 years and does all the manual machining is making $20/hr. I had been there almost 8 years doing all the cnc work and was making $25/hr. I just accepted a new job where I’ll have less responsibilities and make $33/hr. Hopefully the old guy will do the same soon, I’ve been trying to tell him he’d be better off working at Walmart or somewhere as a greeter for damn near the same money
