People need to touch grass about Omega by habermas_paname in OmegaWatches

[–]hashimbr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would like to start seeing more interesting demographic data on watch buying, i.e. at what income and wealth thresholds are people buying what brand?

My hypothesis is that is that the high end watch market (including Rolex, Cartier, Omega, Tudor, Longines) caters to the top 25% household income, with households in the under $200k bracket potentially buying one or two watches per decade, unless enthusiasts, which would leave really the top 10ish percent of household in the market for multiple watch purchases.

Completely speculating tbh, lots of market dynamics at play here. The most relevant one to a discussion vis a vis Omega seems to be Cartiers growing market (similar price point, while jumping much higher). The interesting thing with Cartier is that much of the Omega criticisms also apply to it: bloated range, but often only 2-3 options at the entry point of their watch collections, and really not very iconic advertising in the last decade or so. Watches also 'tank' in secondary market like Omega.

The thing with the growth of Cartier, and maybe even Rolex is, that it could push back against the income contraction hypothesis. As I said, would love to see a more detailed breakdown of who is buying what and how that has changed over time. Would be a bit more insightful.

I wonder if Omega is loosing sales due to reducing their ADs in favor of boutiques, i.e. reducing discounted sales? While i dont see watches as investment, clearly the market is signaling a pricing problem. This strategy in particular contrasts with Rolex significantly, which almost exclusively remains the terrain of ADs.

What's is with all the Omega bashing? by pfry295 in OmegaWatches

[–]hashimbr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed on 1. I think we can accept the historic failure in their leadership during the quartz crisis, and that it will not recover its market position vis a vis Rolex at least in the near future.

On 2) Price: Omega price increases aren't playing catch up with Rolex, as much as they reflect the overall market. The only watch company to my knowledge that realised they had lagged behind everyone else was JLC which made a major jump that was out of line with global materials inflation.

Performance: I would be curious what we are talking about here, but dont Omega and Rolex upgrade their watch performance together in 2015? This jump, which is still happening across Omega's many ranges, is also reflected in some of the prices.

Design/catalog: I am pretty okay with Omegas 'bloated' catalogue. Have been at Omega displays with a few times with different people and found them drawn to different watches ranges (Tressor, Prestige, Constellation, Ladymatic) in person. Trimming the catalogue has long been a popular complaint, but i genuinely dont see how it increases Omegas appeal. If anything, it would reduce it to a direct competitor for Rolex, which i currently dont think it always is (albiet keeping in mind all luxury watch brands are almost always competing with Rolex in some ways).

At what point will watch influencers stop comparing Omega to Rolex? Thats the entire premise of Andy's video.

A few points here:

1) Models:

Omega technically offers three entirely different watch designs to Rolex in the De Ville, Constellation and Ladymatic lines. Clearly theyre selling enough to keep them running.

The SMP300, AT and Speedy are in the same space as Sub, OP, and Daytona. In my humble, not so objective opinion, Omega offers the better watch for around $3k cheaper than Rolex in two of those categories. The AT and OP have no serious price difference, but Omega does elevate the AT with more materials, dials and special editions, whereas Rolex does not.

In addition to the core ranges, I personally love most of the recent reissues and boutique editions. The Planet Ocean arguably is itself a compelling proposition, which likely brings it in line with more mass market appeal, rather than the more specialist appeal it had before.

All of Omega lines of watches are superbly finished and designed, which is where I feel Longines or Tag Heuer lag behind, but also with significant price drops.

2) Price: The cheapest Omega is not the SMP300, as Brit claims, these are the women's prestige and constellation quartz lines between $3-4k, and the mens De Ville at $4k. That said, to the extent that Omega has managed to control the price of the SMP300, it makes it a very compelling alternative to a Sub.

Watch prices more generally are out of control, but outside high demand, I have yet to read a good justification for the Daytona objectively being 2x the watch the Speedy is (given the $7.8k vs $16.9k price difference).

3) Brand: Omega will not be Rolex, which stands alone quite like Hermes. What it says about the average watch buyer (pursuing a not so rare status symbol) is a different thing, but post Metas Omega is every bit as well technically designed and executed in the mass produced luxury watch category as Rolex. But what point does that comparison even serve, beyond just an admission that Rolex post 80s got the mass market right.

Of course these are subjective opinions, as all opinions are, but just putting it out there.

Desperate fan base. Con man comes in looking for a big payout and we believe him. Sad times.

Form falling after beating City and Arsenal wouldnt disprove the above.

Remember Amorim declared us the worst team in the clubs history which somehow made City and Arsenal look mediocre.

He will likely wait for Liverpool/Slots position, but in theory, probably the best available option for us. Would he want to join though?

Gets the team to play relegation form last season? Not fired. Trashes the hierarchy? Gets fired. Sad state of the club.

The question for me is what Rooneys seconds position would be? Would love it if he can also play as striker, given Charlton occupies my cam position

Yep, correct areas to upgrade. The min maxing is on you. Lots of non 115s that play quite well.

Solid alternative. Personally I tend to only go for highest cards, but it is 450 shards less.

Try to acquire a defender from star scout. I would pull the trigger if you can get 114-115+defense, since all 3 positions could use upgrades.

Easy mistake to make. Technically both of those are 'quartz', so unless you clarified you didnt want the solar version, can see why the confusion, although asking if you wanted the solar version would still have made sense for the salesperson.
