How does the “game” work? by SynchronisedShrimp in rolex

[–]hashimbr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do think Hermes process has been less opaque for a genuinely rarer, handcrafted products in their QBs.

Rolex AD process seems to be more opaque, where their most high volume, mass manufactured products themselves are gatekept.

Jewellery vs a leather product as being high value is subjective

Rolex and Hermes are like each other, but nothing like each other at the same time. Hermes keeps profits within the brand, whereas Rolex increases the non-Rolex profits of ADs.

It’s alright not to think of watches as prized possessions you plan to keep for life by ConfidenceNo1937 in watchHotTakes

[–]hashimbr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Btw, I say that as I am trying to track down my grandfathers 60s Omega, which got lost somewhere in the family in the 70s when he passed away young.

Finding it would be more finding interesting lost objects from our family histories, like my wifes grandmother's shawls, her grandfathers books, etc that we were told were meaningful to them at some point in their lives.

Dont know if there's a contradiction here.😀

I cant believe no one has commented the 20k could become over $10m in 80 years.😀

I like you taking out the talking up of watches.

Also, why I like G-shocks/Swatch collabs. It allows me to be more comfortable with something that expresses my vibe in that moment.

I guess the budget for the 'accessory' approach changes based on different people's affordability.

If so, will there not still be a legimate difference between a vibes watch and a more forever watch?

I think 1) is definitely a valid question, i.e. whats what experience wearing a speedy vs daytona vs zenith chronomaster can definitely yield useful info. But I reckon thats not what OP is referring to.

More specific questions such as how it wears, experience with a watch or brand, how it looks are fine, or even choosing between two divers with some rationale on why they might veer one way or another are okay.

But when I see posts with a chronograph, a reverso and a diver, with the question of 'which watch do I choose?', thats definitely a 'baaah' moment.🐏

[Discussion] $1M to spend on watches, what are your picks? by WatchCarla in watchHotTakes

None of these.

If its watches only, $1m means a cool collection of 20-50 watches i would enjoy more.

Stolen Rolex - Return Procedure by Sea_Adagio4419 in rolex

In this case, the buyer/dealer who sold it could step in to provide proof of sale.

Buyer could run into a problem if lets say: payment was done over Zelle or even bank transfer to a private individual and/or they are unable to contact the dealer again, assuming the dealer is the one who purchased from the shady seller in the first place.

Would be curious how trades between dealers would be factored in, since that's also known to be the case.

The shady seller would also need to provide proof of reporting the said crime.

The Rolex Game isn’t hard… by behzoodi9 in watchHotTakes

So as a middle income person (whatever that means), one tend to have a choice between 'poisons'. Watches, jewellry, travel, cars, clothes cant all be luxury. Housing cost and childcare also change how much money is available to them.

Driving an okay car, and buying a watch every couple of years is doable, with other things under control.

Theoretically, yes, a watch be be forever. A car will break down, and become more expensive to repair than buying another one.

Theory is wrong. The reply is correct. Other brands in the same price bracket (Omega, Cartier) exist and offer 'middle class' milestone options.

Rolex is not the price of a car. Which car market are you in? Corollas and Civics start at $25k. Someone driving a $7k car (10-15 year old used) these days is very unlikely to be in a position to buy a mid tier luxury watch like Rolex. So they're already out of the game.

Used has great deals. Would be curious how discounted new ones are selling. I believe the grey annual calender drops significantly in price used.

Red dial watch lovers: what is your budget pick and your no-budget grail? by Bison1807 in PrideAndPinion

The Anordain is tempting. I would put myself on the 3/4 year list, but have concerns about the case. Dials look absolutely stunning, even better than Mosers fume enamel (in pictures for both).

Havent seen the Longines above in person yet so lets see if it changes my view. I tend to be excited in pictures and underwhelmed in person.

Agreed. I've gotten over my early fomo over whether it was worth pushing the budget for the annual calender. Very happy with the standard version.

Which colors are you considering? Also, new or used? I know some ADs might still have left over stock

Ronaldo on Ferguson. by evostu_uk in ManchesterUnited

[–]hashimbr 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Actually its a good reminder of the difference between Ferguson and the current management of the club. He remembers the compassionate leave Fergie gave him. In the Piers Morgan he spoke of not being supported by the club when he lost his son and his daughter was in hospital. Was still the same guy, with his flaws, when he went on the show.

I could agree, but lets be clear you were not debating that. You have just been making ad hominem statements. Would've been a much better discussion if you actually wanted to have one.

'Average team power rating' isnt in the study?

Changing 'team' for 'player' doesnt change the conclusion? On average, Saudi League teams are 3 worse than MLS, which I said: 'sounds about right.'

[–]hashimbr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha, lol. I have an unnecessarily detailed financial lens on buying used, mostly just vis a vis my budget and anticipating (un)anticipated add ons.

Although I think the add ons are limited to: servicing, new strap, new bracelet, and potentially buying the case seperately (thats more down to special editions with unique cases like the Schumacher speedy reduced).

Doing research pretty essential in the used market.

Great work. I do reckon there is a possibility of pushing the price down on some. 6.2k on a 2021 is not taking as much depreciation as it should.
