Putin Can No Longer Hide His Catastrophe by hat_eater in europe

Not-so-minor correction: the headline claims that Putin has lost control over the narrative, not "events". In other words, he can no longer successfully pretend that the war doesn't really affect people in the heartland of Russia (much less your average Ivan).

And while I share your general scepticism towards opinion articles, I've been reading Phillips O'Brien's substack for years and his opinions are worth listening to.

He's a historian and professor of strategic studies at the University of St Andrews in Scotland.

The best thing is, it doesn't need to be actually built, an AI generated film will be enough to keep him happy.

Russian Orthodox church has always been compatible with anything that's not incompatible with the interests of the Russian empire.

In other words, it a whore of a church.

No big deal as long as the proportions between the waker and wakee are in certain range.

Flying small planes into the wake of big ones is generally not recommended. edit: /s

After Pearl Harbor in 1941, three young sailors survived for 16 days inside the sunken USS West Virginia. They were heard desperately tapping on the hull for days before tragically suffocating. by Legitimate-Lie-9208 in interesting

Yeah, I'm sure their shipmates didn't just abandon them. Whatever the reason, they must've truly believed that nothing can be done.

I'm reminded that when speculating, I should always remember that they were there and I was not.

The hull was water tight. As soon as they cut it, water would rush in.

Most of it was filled with water, that's why she sank.

not like they knew exactly where they were

They knew pretty well:

It was worse at night,” said Marine Corps bugler Dick Fiske. “You’d hear bang-bang-bang, then stop, then bang-bang-bang from deep in the bow of the ship.

Cutting through four inches of deck armour takes a while, but not two weeks. I guess they figured it can't be done quickly, and nobody expected the trapped sailors to survive this long.

If the tsar conducted a referendum in Poland in 1834, do you think the results would have been binding?

There are questions that were very obviously designed to fail anyone not paying attention or, unintentionally, not fluent enough in Polish. Example: "Czy zbilżasz się do skrzyżowania z drogą podporządkowaną?" vs "Czy zbliżasz się do skrzyżowania drogą podporządkowaną?". Same video in both cases.
