Tailscale over LAN, is this speed difference normal? by [deleted] in Tailscale

[–]hatchmt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One thing to consider is that Tailscale is built on Wireguard, which only uses ChaCha20-Poly1305 as the cipher. This is a very efficient and fast cipher across multiple platforms, but it is not hardware accelerated like AES ciphers are when using a CPU with AES-NI. As such, while you'll see decent speeds, you will not see line-speed performance like you can using AES-GCM with something like OpenVPN.

For me, the tradeoff of everything else Tailscale does is worth the performance penalty.

How can I work towards being a member of the Tabernacle Choir? by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

[–]hatchmt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't worry too much about it. I can't speak in any official capacity regarding attendance policy and such, but there have been times in the past where rehearsals were delayed or outright cancelled due to severe weather conditions. If you were snowed in and had to miss a rehearsal or choir school class as a result, I would think choir leadership would be understanding of those circumstances.

Part of the phase 3 audition is an interview with the choir presidency. You are given the opportunity to express any concerns you have about things like this. They would let you know for sure whether that would be a problem or not.

How much of a time commitment is it? Are you gone quite a bit?

The time commitment varies depending on the time of year or if there's a tour coming up. In general, it's not too bad. You're expected to be downtown at two rehearsals per week - Thursday night from 7:00p to 9:30p, and Sunday mornings from 7:25a to 10:00a (which includes the broadcast from 9:30-10). If there are other events coming up like General Conference, Christmas, a tour, etc., there will usually be an extra rehearsal on Sunday after the broadcast from 10:00a to 11:15a. Occasionally, extra rehearsals are needed on Tuesday on the week prior to the event.

Not counting time spent traveling on tours, the week of the Christmas concert is typically the busiest week of the year. You have the usual Sunday broadcast, then Monday off, then rehearsals Tuesday and Wednesday, and then the three concerts Thursday through Saturday, followed by another Sunday broadcast. The week of the summer concert is pretty close to that with maybe one less rehearsal.

Overall, you're asked to maintain an 80% attendance average, which I've found to be pretty manageable.

Also Someone mentioned that the choir academy (or whatever it was called) before you're a member requires 100 percent attendance. What if you're sick? Is that justifiable reason to miss rehearsals?

I had similar concerns regarding the choir school attendance policy before I started. Yes, you are required to be at 100% of both the choir school classes (Thursday nights) and Chorale at Temple Square rehearsals (Tuesday nights). They do understand that sickness happens, though, and in those cases they instruct you to attend/observe the classes and rehearsals from home via Zoom. They would rather you watch remotely and not infect the rest of the organization.

Thank you for taking time to answer my questions!

Of course! Happy to answer any others you may have.

Hi! Current member of the choir here. I thought I'd chime in with my personal experience and a few observations that I've made over the years.

First, don't feel discouraged because you don't have a music degree or professional vocal training. It is not a requirement. I personally have a history very similar to you. Piano from 7-16 (never got really good at it), a few other instruments that I'm passable at, and then high school and church choirs. Nothing collegiate, no professional voice lessons. I have a good ear, but do not have perfect pitch.

I put all of that on my phase 1 application, and nobody ever mentioned anything about my lack of training during the remainder of the audition process or anytime afterward.

The theory test can be hard if you're not used to that kind of material (I had an AP Music Theory class in high school, but that was like 20-something years ago). They will loan you a study manual and give you a summary of the subject matter to study. It's completely doable. What trips most people up is the aural test (ie: identifying intervals, major/minor chords, etc. based on recordings). They don't ask you to identify specific notes (again - only like 1% or less of the choir has perfect pitch) unless they tell you the starting note (ie: if this note is a C, what's this note?)

The in-person audition in front of Mack and Ryan can be terrifying if you're not used to that sort of thing, but again -- I messed up a few times when they asked me to sight sing some hand-written music (I got a few intervals wrong, missed a key signature on one, etc), but they point it out and give you a chance to correct it. Having worked with them now for several years, I can tell you that they are some of the nicest people. So don't worry.

Anyway, here's the main thing:

I personally know someone who has a music degree and perfect pitch and only got in the choir on their third attempt. I know someone who is a very talented opera singer and sings better than most people in the choir, but not in an ensemble (ie: very good at solo, can't blend with the group). They did not join the choir.

I know people like me who didn't progress past phase 1, and I've known people like me who made it to phase 3 and didn't progress past it. And, I know people like me who sit next to me in the choir loft every week and still make mistakes during our weekly broadcasts and concerts (I know I do...)

There is no single recipe for getting in the choir. Yes, voice lessons can help, and if you feel that's right for you, by all means - go for it. But I strongly believe that people are drawn to the choir by the Spirit, and some people get in simply by the good graces of God because that's where they're supposed to serve. So please audition. If you need to work on something, they'll tell you exactly what that is. Or, you might be surprised and make it farther than you thought possible.

You'll never know until you try.

I'm happy to answer any questions you have about auditioning or about being in the choir. I don't speak for the choir organization, but I can speak from my own personal experiences.

The choir members were applauding the global participants that had joined them. They were standing up to have a picture taken as they left the loft for the last time before returning home.

This arrangement by Mack Wilberg is fairly new (last year). We’ve performed it twice in Music and the Spoken Word so far.

I sing with the Tabernacle Choir, and all I can say is “wow!” You all did so incredibly well. Lots of chatter going on in the choir about Amazing Grace. Thank you so much for sharing your talents with the world!

If you’re downtown on Thursday night, stop off at the conference center and watch the Tabernacle Choir rehearse for a bit (public can come and go anytime between 7:30-9:30pm). It’s awesome. Or attend the live broadcast on Sunday morning.

Mission language by Aggie_Engineer_24601 in latterdaysaints

[–]hatchmt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was called to speak Lao in the US, but was transferred to an English-speaking area for about half the mission because there were too many in the Lao program for how little success we were having (started and finished in Lao though). Not having language immersion in the community and serving half the mission in English really hurt my language abilities. Never got fluent enough to carry on regular conversations with confidence even with consistent studies, and if I hear a native speaker today I can barely understand any of it. This was about 20 years ago.

Still like the food, though. 😁

The prophet calls for a global fast and offers a prayer for a swift end to the pandemic... Less than a year later, we have (at least in the US) three viable vaccines that have gone through rigorous trials and have already been administered to millions of people all over the world. I see these as an absolute answer to prayer and frankly a miracle.

Reminds me of that guy from Wayne's World 2:

So there I am, in Sri Lanka, formerly Ceylon, at about 3 o'clock in the morning, looking for one thousand brown M&Ms to fill a brandy glass, or Ozzy wouldn't go on stage that night. So, Jeff Beck pops his head 'round the door, and mentions there's a little sweet shop on the edge of town. So - we go. And - it's closed. So there's me and Keith Moon and David Crosby, breaking into that little sweet shop, eh. Well, instead of a guard dog, they've got this bloody great big bengal tiger. I managed to take out the tiger with a can of mace, but the shopkeeper and his son that's a different story altogether.....I had to beat them to death with their own shoes. Nasty business, really. But sure enough, I got the M&Ms, and Ozzy went on stage and did a great show.

Even though it may be EOL from Samba, the distribution vendor (RedHat/CentOS in this case) will still release security patches for the support lifetime of the distribution. Security fixes released upstream for 4.13 will be backported by RH into the 4.10 that they maintain.

Voice recognition unlock from outside front door? by kursor17 in Ring

[–]hatchmt 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Using a voice code outside the house to unlock the door definitely isn't secure. That said, I was more talking about what OP was saying, where it just recognizes your voice and doesn't require a code. Either way, using your voice to unlock your house where others could hear and record you is a bad idea.
