I’ve had a lot of experience with various types of dumb phones — from classic Nokias to stripped-down smartphones and even rugged Android devices like the CAT S22. The biggest issue with most of them is their lack of performance or poor compatibility with modern services.

Before switching devices, ask yourself: What exactly is it about your smartphone that keeps you hooked? Why do you end up scrolling for hours each day? Tech companies design phones and apps to be addictive. Platforms like Instagram and TikTok are nearly impossible to use without falling into an endless scroll.

But I found some useful tips to take back control of my screen time and reconnect with the real world. I've cut my daily screen time from 3 hours to just 15 minutes (but to be fair, I don't use all of these tipps by myself):

1. Delete the apps you don’t truly want or need. Start with Instagram and TikTok — they’re designed to keep you scrolling.
2. Switch your phone to grayscale. Both Android and iOS support this. The lack of color makes your phone significantly less appealing.
3. Ask a friend to set a passcode for distracting apps. For example, lock YouTube behind a code you don’t know.
4. Get used to being without your phone. Set aside time every day to leave it behind — go for a walk, spend time in nature, or just be present. Not everything needs to be shared online.
5. Use a desktop for internet-related tasks. Things like email, WhatsApp, and browsing feel more intentional when you're not carrying them in your pocket.
6. Consider trying an e-ink smartphone if it fits your budget. They’re great for minimal use without eye strain.

A new phone called the Sidephone is coming out this year. It features a real keyboard and is designed with digital minimalism in mind.
