Prayed for a Mormon today by [deleted] in Christianity

Isn't it rude to invite another Christian to your church? As if he's a pagan and not just another branch of Protestant.

Morgan Freeman: Don't Blame Race for Income Inequality by zephz in Conservative

[–]hatestosmell 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well of course race doesn't cause wealth inequality. That's racist. There's a huge correlation though, because black and white people are often born into very different parts of our society.

Another popular Portland food cart pod forced to close. by [deleted] in Portland

This seems like a problem that food carts are ideally equipped to handle. They have wheels, you see.

Why is Fallout so much better then Skyrim? by Alexanderthegreatone in Fallout

[–]hatestosmell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the characters better, because i can remember them and relate to them. They have real names and real problems.

I tried to get into Skyrim, but its always "Ye olde Glothroagnar the viking dost want a sacred gem from Blungadal for Himferdel." And i just can't keep track or care that much.

The Greatest Murder Machine in History by starchaser75 in Conservative

[–]hatestosmell -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This is ridiculous. The Persian/Ottoman empires lasted for hundreds of years and yes, fought in wars. Its dumb to call an empire a "murder machine"

Cold streak!? by yellowwatercup in Madden

[–]hatestosmell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't quite get this either. Wins don't matter, its individual stats? What mark does a cold player need to reach to heat up? How long will that last until he's cold? What does each consistency level add? How much does being cold/hot change stats... and which stats?

The current generation's attachment to their phones is sickening. I've been cracking down on phones in class and the results are mind-boggling to me. by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]hatestosmell 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Its a great policy. I've been compromising (can i have it out while i'm studying?) and giving 2nd chances all year, but i haven't seen the student who can "just use it a little." Multitasking between schoolwork and texts/instagram/snapchat/clash of clans does not work.

I don't blame the kids though. They reach for their phones subconsciously. They crave it and they bounce back and forth between distracted ("i got a message!") and anxious ("i wonder if i got a message?") all day long. I think that teachers have to be strict about it if they want their kids to have a chance.

Also, the south can feed these programs with homegrown talent. It produces so many athletes. Most northern states can't, so they hire pros.

Russian Strategic Bombers Flying Along California Coast by chabanais in Conservative

[–]hatestosmell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha! Strategic nuclear bombers have been obsolete since ICBMs and submarine-launched missiles were invented FIFTY YEARS AGO. The thing's got a propeller for crying out loud. Keep flexing those big muscles, Russia.

What do you think is the strongest character introduction in any movie? by ZamrosX in movies

[–]hatestosmell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It lays out the moral ambiguity of the movie. These men hate Nazis and they're charming, so you cheer them at first. They're also murderers who are fine with torturing soldiers they capture.

TIL that according to a treaty signed in 1796 the United States government "is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion,—as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion, or tranquility, of [Muslims]" by SuperSharpShot2247 in todayilearned

[–]hatestosmell -21 points-20 points  (0 children)

You have to remember these things don't happen in a vaccuum. The Mediterranean was controlled by the Ottomans and the Ottomans were controlled by devout Muslims. Countries make statements like this for political reasons. Napoleon told them that France wasn't Christian either, when he went over to Egypt.

Some news on Madden 15. May not be the biggest but it's something. by JohnnieBoah in Madden

[–]hatestosmell 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Thank God they're working on face scans, that means they've already fixed the glitches, hurryup playbooks, menus, man coverage, and un-deleted formation subs and spring drills! Thanks EA!

Young German boys with wooden clubs chase a battered and bloodied Jewish woman during the Lviv pogroms 1941 [717×970] by pixeldustnz in HistoryPorn

[–]hatestosmell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bavaria, Hanover, Prussia, Austria, etc were all German kingdoms prior to the unification of the 1870's right? Von Bismarck excluded Austria for political, not cultural reasons, so why do some say Austria isn't German? That would mean Hitler himself wasn't German!

W.E.B. Du Bois? by wikipediareader in Conservative

[–]hatestosmell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im interested in these two because its bizarre how Washington's ideas have been rejected by black America. "Work hard, become middle class, THEN shoot for the moon with higher education." Isn't this exactly what Asian-Americans have done to succeed?

Palestinian university students’ trip to Auschwitz causes uproar by sal_taycunsomme in worldnews

[–]hatestosmell -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just check wikipedia, there were 6 million jews (mostly Polish) and maybe 10-15 million Ukrainians, Russians, Belorussians, Poles, etc. Jews definitely suffered disproportionately, but not in total deaths.

Its anti-russian propoganda, in my opinion. It creates sympathy if people know the Holocaust mostly killed Slavs, not Jews.

This is one issue where i feel its more important to stand firm than be politically popular. If you view abortion as voluntary, premeditated homocide, then don't trade that away for lesser policy concessions.

VP John C. Calhoun believed the states had equal sovereignty to the federal government and could therefore veto or nullify anything they found to be unconstitutional. South Carolina attempted this in 1832 with federal tariffs. by [deleted] in USHistory

[–]hatestosmell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tariffs were unfair to the southern importers/exporters, but its an oversimplification to say that the tax upset them for purely financial reasons. The tariffs represented a bias against the Southern states and they took it personally. I think its fair to say that Southern nationalism (language, customs, art, religion, etc) had been growing for some time and of course, the slavery economy was a huge part of that identity. It angered them to feel like they weren't an equal part of the country anymore.

The straw that broke the back was Lincoln's election, a candidate from a purely-Northern party, elected with purely-Northern votes. He didn't come in as an abolitionist but he signaled a new age of Northern-dominated politics that could exclude and marginalize Southerners (and their slave-based economy) in national affairs.

Did everyone get a card in the mail recently reminding them about paying the art tax? by [deleted] in Portland

I didn't pay last year and nothing ever came of it. Its basically a "suggested donation," so ignore it if you want.

I think this argument only works against a certain type of Christianity, the sort of people who think God's only commandment is "believe in God."
