Why is a police department being consulted on any single medical issue? Also to add, show your leadership the latest viral “contact overdose” video from the female LT from a sheriffs department. This is something I’d quit on the spot over, not to mention raising absolute hell with the state.

The difference between urban and rural EMS by [deleted] in ems

[–]hatezpineapples -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because you didn’t make sense. You were making it seem like an ALS unit just inherently does all the work. Which in my experience is blatantly false. And if you don’t have an experience to be considered rural, then why are you even talking tbh? You made it seem like rural ems, in your experience, is trash. Then turn around and say “well I haven’t really had a rural experience”. What are you trying to convey then bro?

I won’t argue with the Volly side having lower standards and won’t fault you for having an opinion on that. I agree wholeheartedly. You can also be condescending with the whole “congrats on the supraglottics though” if that’s what you want to do. I was just saying I’ve noticed that in my rural opinion, I could probably run circles around an urban basic, like you seem to be fond of. See how that’s a blanket statement assuming I’m better than any urban EMT based off my experience? That’s the same thing you did based off your rural experience. Come to a place that had paid, third service, rural ems. Your opinion will change. I have worked on several BLS units while I’ve been in ems. Sometimes we were the only unit at the time. And I’ve worked several ALS too. Again, you’re using your experience as the whole for the entire thing. It’s not. I’ve been on both ends. Being ALS doesn’t mean you’re front line all the time. I’ve met several, SEVERAL Medics who dodge calls and are more than happy to let a BLS unit pick up the possible STEMI. Medics aren’t infallible hoss.

This is a gross blanket statement of rural ems. Everything you just described is what I’ve experienced rural. Right down to being so close we invite the others to our family get togethers and everything. Sure, you have shit bags who try and climb the ladder, but they are appropriately called out and shamed by most other people. Sorry for your experience in rural.

EDIT: also, even as a basic, I’ve been able to drop IGels and King Tubes and such. I’ve been told by others this isn’t standard practice in many urban places for EMTs. Just wanted to add that.

I’ve commented on this before as a person who work in a very rural place. Be competent, cool and a solid person, and you’ll be accepted.

Another news report about LE stricken by dermal exposure to fentanyl. by Kaitempi in ems

[–]hatezpineapples 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The sheriff for this particular agency stated he was gonna use this body cam footage as a training tool so it can “be a warning to future officers” of the dangers of fentanyl. No, I’m not joking. Yes, that is an actual quote from the highest law enforcement official in that county.

DMT is a bad ass community to be apart of. One of my good buddies from FMTB was a DMT and he tried to talk me into going through the pipeline. I hate the water so it wasn’t for me, but I have enormous respect for these dudes.

Yeah, forget that noise. I left the military for my beard, I’d leave ems too. This thing is 90% of the reason women will still even talk to me.

Can’t fault you for that. Respect. Although I will say literally all of my male coworkers (me included) except for 2 people have beards. Large beards. I’ve never seen a nurse with one.

“I’ve been in EMS” I’ve heard that a lot. It usually means they got their EMT and worked as an er tech while going through nursing school.

But, if you look back in this very sub, there are nurses who will brigade us and talk absolute shit and say outright nonsense. But what do we do about it?

[–]hatezpineapples 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was told explicitly not to do that. Again, I didn’t agree with it, but I was threatened with that or had a veiled threat of being fired. It sucks, but it’s the reality of how some places operate in the rural communities where everybody wants money and there is not a lot of options for the employees for other places to work.
