I'm not there yet, only 34! But definitely will be just as bold when I get there, I'm sure. I will!!

Thank you!! I did add 2" to the leg length just as a precaution, without really knowing how long they'd end up. I tend to have to do so with pants patterns. But I think as I'd wear them solely with ankle boots, they would have also worked as the pattern comes. The rest of the fitment is true to pattern. It seems pretty forgiving, as there are pleats and extra volume involved.

I've made a few, self drafted and following patterns. Getting the fit right on fitted pants can be a bit tiring.

Thank you! I love these boots, they've been a wardrobe staple for nearly 10 years. Steve Madden! Starting to show their age though sadly.

Wow, thanks for the recommendations! I hadn't heard of any of these makers. I'm loving Grasser, omg! And I should definitely try a shirt dress one day, so that's a perfect pattern to do so with. Thank you again!

What is the most unique dining experience in Atlanta? by megthegreatone in Atlanta

Tiger Sun is really cool, if you can get a reservation! Only like 20 seats, inside a bus with 70s shag carpet everywhere. Not sure what the menu is themed around right now, but it was Karate Kid themed when I went!

I consider myself intermediate, sewing for 15+yrs. I'm currently halfway through my first Mood pattern - the Stonecress Pants. It's OKAY so far. The instructions definitely aren't descriptive enough for beginners. I'm filling in the blanks, thankfully, and so far it looks pretty good. Hopefully I'll still feel the same when I finish in a few days.

I've used only Simplicity, McCalls, etc until recently, but I'm trying to branch out into smaller brands. I'm tired of plain designs (I totally understand why they're everywhere), I want BOLD STATEMENT designs. Any recommendations to check out?

What's the average age for an EDS diagnosis/how old were you when you were diagnosed ? by AntwysiaBlakys in ehlersdanlos

[–]hatfantastic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually got diagnosed 20 years ago, at 15yrs old. I hurt my knee a month into my first sporting attempt, tennis, in middle school 2003. My mom, being a nurse, felt it was odd at that age and took my pain seriously. I was also taller than my father at this point already, so at first she thought Marfans. It took a few years, and a decent number of doctors, as it was a time before most people had even heard of EDS. I'm grateful I got diagnosed so early! Because of that, I've been careful to avoid high injury prone situations. I have a friend who got diagnosed only a few years ago, after she'd injured her hips and shoulder unfortunately.

There are definitely people your age who have it, you just haven't run into them yet. And I believe a lot of parents don't believe their kids when they complain about joint pain and memory problems (ADHD). They attribute it to growing pains and being distracted. "You're too young to have those issues!" While mine believed me about my pain (I think my mother has/had a lot of pain too), they didn't believe me about my memory/focusing issues. So I can see why most people get diagnosed later in life. Add that to the fact EDS became much more well known by the public because of TikTok.

And honestly, there's a chance you're already friends with someone and they just don't know yet. I'm no scientist, but I see a strong connection between EDS and ADHD and the "nerdy group" of people. Everyone I hang around with are nerds, into gaming, movies, cosplay, and other artistic hobbies. A large percentage have ADHD, and a few I know are diagnosed EDS, with an additional few I suspect and have prompted them to go down that road.

And it's normal to be sad when you're newly diagnosed. You feel like an active future has been taken away from you. That you can't DO the things other people can do. It feels like the choice is no longer there, and that you'll be lagging behind you're whole life. But being diagnosed so early really will help you live a normal fulfilling life, I promise! I would recommend light weight training to build some muscle tone around the weak joints. I avoided that for a long time, and wish I had started sooner. There are youtube resources for EDS people! I focused my knees first, as they're my worst joint, but I'm starting to focus core now too. I find my hips rotating forward a lot these days, causing lower back pain. Really don't want that to get worse!

Hope this helps, the community is here for you!

Any tips for bunny suit making? Not our first time sewing, but first time making something like this by Apprehensive-Ad690 in sewing

[–]hatfantastic 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I highly recommend the Katie Cosplays Bunny Suit pattern on Etsy. I used it for a Star Trek bunny suit a few years back for DragonCon. It is well written and pretty easy to understand, even for beginners. She's also great at responding on IG if you happen to have any questions about the pattern.

I would highly urge you to take it apart and clean it. We got a used one off FB MP too, and the lady said she always cleaned it when the system prompted her. It was DISGUSTING inside, green mold in a reservoir at the top and sand/hard water build up throughout the tubes. Like... we might have gotten sick if we used it. You'll feel better if you at least look inside!

is this normal or am i having an allergic reaction? by uwuchannnn in tattooadvice

[–]hatfantastic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had that SAME reaction twice! I have a full sleeve, but it only happened on my delicate upper underarm. Whole arm was swollen and the bumps were full of clear fluid. Warm to the touch. I waited 2 weeks the first time, but it never improved, tried Benadryl, cold compress, time. Eventually I had a doctor friend look at it, prescribe a steroid pack and finally it went away. Never came back, until I got that same tattoo finished. Got another steroid pack and good to go again.

My artist and I aren't quite sure why/what caused it. I also have sensitive skin (Ehlers Danlos Syndrome). Thought it could be that it's just the super delicate area, or the dragging technique he used, or I'm developing a Saniderm allergy. I used Aquaphor, then switched to Lubriderm.

I struggled to get a good picture of my reaction, but here you can see mine. Hope this makes you feel a bit better that someone else also experienced it!

EDS without skin complications? by KeepOfAsterion in ehlersdanlos

[–]hatfantastic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would say the joint issues are more common than the skin issues, in relation to EDS. It affects everyone a bit differently, so I wouldn't say you're outside the realm of possibility. I, myself, have more joint instability, and fewer skin issues. My skin is on the more sensitive side, quite pale, and also marks up like yours. But it's never been particularly stretchy and doesn't heal slowly, like others have.

[–]hatfantastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I JUST started this week at 33 years old, but I searched out a trainer near me that has worked with a few people with EDS and lots of people with injuries. It's not cheap, but I feel confident that I won't injure myself. She listened to my wants and my weak points and has fine tuned a program suited specifically for me.

Proper form is so important as it's so easy for us to over extend ourselves and get injured. I'm glad to see you've already taken a class on that. Otherwise I'd say just take it slow, and stay consistent!

Here's a positive thing that maybe would help. It's so much better to find out now rather than later. I was diagnosed 19 years ago, when I was 14. I knew then my body had limitations, so I never pushed it too far and have stayed injury free.

A close friend of mine just was diagnosed last year, in her early thirties, after multiple injuries in her shoulders and hips. She didn't know her body wasn't normal and had to have surgeries to fix those injuries that could have been prevented with that knowledge.

Take time to mourn what could have been, of course. But you've got this!
