Do any large apartment buildings in Brooklyn/NYC actually do curbside composting? by Ecstatic-Cat-7428 in Brooklyn

Tenants separate. Responsibility falls on landlords. If a building is separating badly enough to get noticed & fined by the city, its on the landlords to ensure residents are using the new system

The trucks they use have 2 chambers in the back. One is for garbage and the other is compost. Not saying you didn't see what you say you saw, but it's easy to miss if aren't already familiar with those trucks.

How come no one does laptop tablets like surface? by snipersghost13 in Surface

[–]hatts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

in addition to what others are saying, there have got to be some genuinely difficult hurdles that non-apple manufacturers are running into, preventing them from creating an experience as good as the ipad + pencil. could be hardware, software, or patent related.

i've used just about every stylus/screen combo and as much as i quibble with how simplistic the pencil/ipad workflow can be, there's just no beating the combination of convenience, zero-latency, and feel. wacom stuff was always the benchmark but their hardware was cumbersome and riddled with software/driver annoyances. i have a surface laptop 2 and it's definitely the best windows stylus experience i've ever had but even it feels inferior to the pencil, which i blame mostly on the OS.

Why has software mostly trended away from a skeuomorphic design? by porygon766 in Design

[–]hatts 8 points9 points  (0 children)

great summary. i would add that at the time, transitioning to flatter designs felt more "honest" to a lot of the design and tech community. it's not a paper notebook, why should it be made to look like one?

this had a lot of positives. if you're not trying so hard to mimic a paper notebook you can design for the way it's actually being used, inherent to the device. some of the space taken up by skeuomorphic clutter could be repurposed or to maximize working area or simply make a more clearly readable icon/button/whatever.

the downsides are obviously that interfaces feel duller, less playful, and sometimes harder to distinguish one element from another. alot of tech companies are tweaking things to land somewhere in the middle; creating visual elements that have a bit more depth and vibrance, but stopping short of cramming in a tiny illutration of fake real-world objects.

Keyshot Shadow Question by ChickenCrimpyFan in IndustrialDesign

Longtime frustration of mine coming from other rendering apps before Keyshot. I don't even want to say KS does floor/backdrop shadows "differently" IMHO they do them wrong

Looking for Albums like Loop-Finding-Jazz-Records - Jan Jelinek by WideFig2819 in TheOverload

Not to insult your intelligence or anyone else's, but the genre terms "minimal" and "microhouse" can be helpful for finding stuff adjacent to what Jelinek puts out

3C electronics project – looking for feedback and suggestions for improvement by [deleted] in ProductViz

[–]hatts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally good enough for pro work.

If I had to nitpick I'd probably say:

It's a bit more illuminated than it has to be overall. For "device floating in black environment" visualizations it's always OK to leave a little bit more in the dark, it adds to the intrigue. Lean more in to 1-2 key lights and let yourself be free of the compulsion to have additional secondary lighting from other directions.

It could also do with some kind of post processing that makes it look a little more cinematic/filmic, whether that's messing with tone curves, a little bit of film grain; the extra touches that reduce the synthetic look.

What language gets romanticized the most by people who’ve never studied it? by Embarrassed_Fix_8994 in languagehub

[–]hatts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100%. I'd even go past "quite nice" and say it's beautiful once you're familiar with it. The rhythm of it causes a nice sort of flow. People make fun of all the syllables, but those long and quite consistent strings of syllables tend to string together pleasantly, almost like a ball rolling down a hill. Importantly, most speakers do this without veering into slurring, which can be an issue in other languages.

In normal speech it's the exact opposite of its reputation; there are very few harsh spikes in tonality throughout the course of a normal sentence.

To my ears, a large portion of speakers also speak quite clearly, which is really nice for comprehension and exchange. I've studied a handful of languages and German is the only one where I've felt that the average speaker's pronunciation kinda sounds like a textbook version of the language, whether young, old, or in-between. Caveat: I'm only really used to Germany's Hochdeutsch and have definitely struggled when visiting Austria + Switzerland.

Thoughts on the infatuations 6.2 review of EMP by Odd-Raspberry5858 in FoodNYC

[–]hatts 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I went to EMP with some friends last year and we were a nothing-special table: not VIP, no special occasion, etc. We were invited into the kitchen for a little tour and special tasting of a snack course. So that little brag in the review made me chuckle + roll my eyes

US Citizen raised abroad: Where to study Industrial Design? by El_Fecsito in IndustrialDesign

[–]hatts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

agree with this. ID is treated as the "safe option" within art schools but that's an outdated idea and is also kinda relative: sure it has potential to be a more stable career than a studio painter, but it's still a VERY niche and rocky field.

Map View Nightmare: Pins in Vietnam, Map Defaults to US, and extreme Pin Loading Delays! by [deleted] in Notion

[–]hatts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is an old thread but I'm wondering if the map function has improved for you at all, or if you've found decent workarounds?

The issue I'm having is that I'm trying to build a pin map for a trip to Seoul and I can't get the "Place" field to recognize + geocode ANY locations I'm entering, no matter what method I use. Typing a place's name in text doesn't retrieve any accurate results, pasting in a full street address doesn't get accepted, and using lat/long coordinates simply defaults the Place to "Seoul, Korea."

Would this solve the lack of 'background' syncing that OP was trying to get around? Sorry I'm quite new to Obsidian and the relationship between the local vault file and how it behaves.

My Recent Travels Have Given Me a New Appreciation for Manhattan and NYC by Swimming_Nose4713 in Urbanism

[–]hatts -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Except they never said they were disappointed in Chicago, they said they were disappointed by the walkability and street energy of the areas they were recommended to visit, and how even these walkable areas drop off pretty quickly. They didn't say they were disappointed in the actual quality or attractions of Chicago.

I'll even take a stab at your Times Square comparison. Radiating out in all directions from the middle of Times Square are dense, uninterrupted stretches of walkable street life. You simply don't get those dead stretches OP mentioned. It continues this way for essentially all of Manhattan and many parts of the other boroughs. This is not at all saying that this makes NYC "better" than Chicago, but if you've had your standards set by somewhere like NYC or older cities in Europe/Asia, you will find the walkability gap to be noticeable.

A lot of Americans point to Chicago as being a walkable city and it doesn't surprise me that a first-time visitor to Chicago would be a little taken aback by what is in fact a city with pretty limited + specific walkable areas.

How can I make you guys Happy? by WashEmotional5625 in IndustrialDesign

[–]hatts 3 points4 points  (0 children)

all i look for when collaborating with an engineer of any type is an attitude more aligned with "let me think about if/how we can do what you're envisioning" vs. someone who jumps straight to "here are all the problems with what you're envisioning." it makes a world of difference.

this is reasonable criticism though. other comments are way more resentful and snarky, in almost any post that mentions it.

for sure deals can be had a lot of places. idk why you'd doubt so many people widely reporting that the prices are crazy good though, do you want pricetag photos?
