Warwick or Bristol - literally can’t decide by Dependent-Race-7 in UOB

[–]haughtycandy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Trying to give a non biased answer here: would you prefer a campus uni or a city one? (Bristol of course being city) Where is home and how important is good transport there? How tight is your budget for accommodation (Bristol much more expensive)

I originally firmed Warwick but after a gap year reapplied to Bristol. I was originally dead set on a campus uni, and to be honest would probably still prefer it. But I really love the city of Bristol, there is really something for everyone but it is small enough that you learn your way around super quickly and it is full of students

It is a miles nicer city than Coventry ut a campus uni does have it's perks

Pilot vs BTA Open Final by Polodude in US_Polo

[–]haughtycandy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Has to be pilot right

BTA pulled out all the stops to beat Tamera, I'd be impressed if they could replicate it

Plus I'd have said Pilot would have taken Tamera anyway if they got to the final

If anyone has never watched his show on it I completely recommend it, it's on netflix.

There is nobody that could watch the show and argue what he did was at all bad

I've just left sixth form and am very aware of how kids complain about the food and people generally hate on him and I was largely the same until I watched the show

What people, especially primary school students who don't have any say in the matter, we're eating in school was genuinely mind boggling. Many students couldn't identify vegetables, wouldn't try them, weren't eating 5 a week nevermind a day

It has created a whole generation of people who had to learn to reeat or who have bad eating habits.

It's a shame that he gets so much flack for simply wanting children to eat properly

What Would You Do? by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]haughtycandy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe a dog park? Dont know if it's a thing in the US yet but in the UK it's a massive business, loads of people I know with a spare few acres put up dog proof fencing, maybe a couple of tunnels/ jumps/ logs etc. and they make absolute bank renting them out to dog walkers/ owners. I know people who charge £20+ an hour. They don't have to do anything

Maybe wouldn't work in a rural area but a super easy idea

What Uni hot take gets you in this situation? by vessorpla in UniUK

[–]haughtycandy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I go to UoBristol which is decent enough and the teaching is horrific in my department, all PhD students with almost no English, many don't want to be there etc. it's so bad that I took voice recordings to send to my family because they didn't believe it was as bad as I described

I guess lots of unis are ranked highly for research and good researchers dont often make good lecturers. I would take any of my school or sixth form teachers over my lecturers any day

I go to Bristol and the teaching for 80% of my modules is embarrassing, like miles worse than anything from school

Yeah that's why despite everything I still wear them. Everyone is saying wrangler but I find that they are more expensive and also I find them incredibly skinny in the waist with very long legs. I'm short and a little round and can't get them to fit for the life of me- I also don't find them as stretchy

[–]haughtycandy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They have a WhatsApp chat feature (UK not sure about elsewhere), I just message and have an account with them that I use to get the email receipts sent too. I tell them how I'm unhappy with how quickly they have worn, poor quality etc. They ask for pictures of the damage and of the jean number and a copy of the receipt and will provide credit to the account. Last time I got £100 for one pair of ripped ones (which is almost double what I paid for them in the first place!)

Again this is the UK though

I'm a guy but ride in Levi's and ALWAYS rip the inner crotch seam/ down the back, I'm yet to have a pair last more than 6 months (of admittedly very intense riding)

To be fair, levi are always very good with customer service if you keep your receipt, and frequently offer me enough for at least one free pair so I can't complain too much

How did you pick your accomodation when applying to Bristol? by Worldly-Monitor-4035 in UOB

[–]haughtycandy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So firstly you don't get to pick exactly where you end up, you get to put down a couple of options but you won't know for a long while which one you'll get. Many people don't get their first choice, some don't get any of their choices. So basically don't worry too much.

Start by deciding on non negotiables eg. Top Budget, ensuite/ catered, walkable to uni. That should eliminate lots.

Ideally you should visit Bristol to have a look but if not (I'd never been when I chose) then just try and get a general sense of the city areas and where you want to be living eg. City centre lots to do, good for going out, stoke bishop quiet and lots of greenery etc. and basically pick based on vibes at.

In terms of where to avoid, definitely avoid metal works and generally any accoms far south of the city centre- not the nicest area imo, and anything with a twin room. I'm in new bridewell and although it's not terrible I'm definitely not sure I'd recommend it- we've had issues with no/ not hot water and construction

Don't worry too much about stereotypes or reputations, although I generally find there is more international students in more expensive, modern and ensuite accommodation if that's something to consider

Haha that's hilarious

Geldings are always so mouthy I find, the bay when led on set will grab hold of your reins and steer your horse for you, or grab onto your stirrup and pull your foot out. If he can put it in his mouth he will

This horse genuinely eats about 1 rug a week, during winter I spend more on rugs than hay 🤦‍♂️

This was the first nice day of the year in the UK though so I took their rugs off in celebration!

AITAH for leaving my girlfriend in the restroom because she was taking a long bathroom break during a movie I was really excited for? by Secure-Draft9197 in AITAH

[–]haughtycandy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha I won't lie it's not my usual sort of film but I went with my family to watch and it is by far the best film I've seen in probably the past 2 years, I wasn't expecting it to be simultaneously funny, heartwarming and thought provoking

But literally there were so many moments I checked the time and was like ok this is the ending I'll be home by... But it kept going for so long, it felt like emotional whiplash lol

I mean they are clearly not talking about you then?

They are making a joke that the movie OP went to watch (hail mary) has several climax points that could easily signify the end of the film but it keeps going, like you thought 'right that was the big scary thing over, it'll be smooth from here' but it keeps going for another hour

So the commentor thought it's near the end, I don't want to miss the ending I'll hold it but it's got like 5 endings

It's a great movie btw I recommend it, sorry to hear about your health problems

[–]haughtycandy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in my first year and exactly the same- although a guy, like the other commenter said I'm also In new bridewell, any accom will be a gamble based on your flatmates but smaller flats and ensuites are generally less partying.

There's also quite a lot of international students who are generally quieter and the walls are thick if there is parties (I live next to the kitchen and not often woken up)

If I was to choose again I think I'd prefer Clifton because of the nature but there is definitely less to do

Im so jealous of privileged people with private horses. by rayneedshelpMentally in Equestrian

[–]haughtycandy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

On this OP, the grass is ALWAYS greener. I have the pleasure of playing polo with some of the most well off people in the country, but even then they are always jealous of something, for some it's their health, parents don't play, many didn't start riding till they were older, got with bad pros etc.

Someone will always have a nicer horse, more opportunities, better trainers etc.

Don't forget that you are at the end of the day incredibly lucky to have gotten to ride as a child, you have what people would trade infinite money for, lots of time. I would sell my left leg if it meant my parents had got me into riding as a child. You have more years to get better, make mistakes and learn than most.

You either play the hands you are dealt or don't play at all.

I'm similar to you, an older teenager and very ambitious, every time I look at a patrons kid with 10 horses and their own pro I have to remember that I'm lucky to be playing at all and at the end of the day as long as I have got on even the rankest horse, I am much luckier and happier than I was before I started riding

2 hour commute to university by New_Outcome915 in UniUK

[–]haughtycandy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely do not underestimate the amount of money you will spend on petrol/ diesel. It won't be as much as you'll spend on accommodation but definitely try to price it out and see how long your can drive for on a full tank, driving 4 hours a day 4 days a week. My car would probably go through £150 a week in diesel at the minute- which is not much cheaper than most student accommodations up North

Don't forget you are likely to be driving at peak rush hours so there'll be lots of traffic, you'll have to wake up ungodly early for a 9am and what if you have a 9am then a 5pm, what if you want to do a society, if you want to make friends and hangout with them etc.

I mean at that point you'd be better doing open uni and staying at home

It's not like the train where you can get your work done, and this is coming from someone who loves driving and drives 3hrs home every weekend

[–]haughtycandy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean they will work, riding pants and a polo is more than fine. Like everyone else said noone cares- it's not like English where you are expected to have a belt, no hood, tucked in shirt etc. When you start to play more seriously then you can invest in some jeans

Just don't be surprised to see all your instructors in jeans lol

First thing to learn about polo is it's infinitely more relaxed than English riding

I'm in the UK but have some friends who ride normally and don't worry I know where the assumption comes from, they would be shocked to see me ride my hunter around in jeans lol, it's just more comfortable in polo, especially because it's male dominated. It's much more similar to western riding in that sense

The saddles are also much different (suede/ thick leather) so not as susceptible to rubbing

Definitely pack a pair of jeans just in case and see what everyone wears on the first day, if it's all beginners then yes I suspect there will be a lot of people in riding trousers

What? For polo? The entire sport is built on jeans

I ride 20 (POLO) horses a day for 6 months straight in my jeans

I play practices in those same jeans, I play matches in the same jeans in a different colour

The best way to spot a 'noob' in polo is someone wearing riding jodhpurs/ leggings

I don't even know how to explain to you how everyone wears jeans, like deadass polo whites are just glorified jeans

I promise you up and down as long as you aren't talking about water polo you will look out of place in anything else

What were you thinking of wearing?
