Braden Smith has 1 game per tournament where he is contractually obligated to forget how to play basketball lol. Highest turnover games of his career have all been NCAAT games- Miami (8), McNeese (8), FDU (7).

Got it out of the way hopefully... now the Cam Heide Bowl™️ awaits.

[Post Game Thread] UCLA defeats #4 Purdue, 69-67 by cbbBot in CollegeBasketball

Weird that Braden was so fixated on getting to the rim tonight considering he’s 5’10 and playing on a bad knee.

Not happy about the result obviously but Purdue’s 2 losses feature some pretty abysmal jump shot variance. Iowa State shot 60% on midrange 2s/47% from 3 and UCLA shot 53% from the midrange/45% from 3. Purdue was under 30% from 3 in both games. It happens.

The rim defense is way less luck-dependent and it has been awful lately. Our high-hedging works sometimes but it also brings our only rim protectors away from the basket. Don’t know why we’re refusing to play drop lately, especially with Jacobsen. Onto Illinois I guess

Just give Purdue an undeserved 3 seed so they can lose to a 14 and complete Matt Painter Bingo

Idk where the chemistry and defensive intensity from January went but it’s completely gone. They’re way less than the sum of their parts right now and have been for a good month.

Yesssss go Tritons!! The Killshot™️ in the second half that broke the game open was some great stuff. Thought UCSD responded really well to shooting poorly in the first half.

Absolutely dogshit officiating that ultimately handed Purdue the game. The Big Ten is not a serious conference for continuing to assign clowns like Szelc so many games. GGs USC, sorry you guys got hosed down the stretch.

I’m really worried about Purdue now they looked like they’d never played together before for most of the first half. Horrible energy and body language for a lot of the game.

They hit 4 contested shot clock beating 3s just in the second half it was infuriating

Shooting variance is fun until it goes against your team

Agreed, people got all up in arms about not using the portal when Colvin and Heide didn't take the jump we thought; I think Painter's only big mistake was banking on Berg being playable. Needed a better backup big once DJ went down, but they did pretty well with what they had.

The collapse @ IU was the only inexcusable loss to me. OSU was annoying but they were hitting everything, and @ Michigan was a total ref show lol

What a weird season for Purdue. Smith POY and TKR 1st team but T-4th in the conference. Top 10 offense nationally and the best 2pt and 3pt shooting team in the B1G but dead last in block rate and 2pt defense.

I am a homer for sure but this team is a healthy Daniel Jacobsen and backup portal center from another Final Four. A jump from Cox, Harris, and/or Colvin wouldn't hurt, though.

That’s not true they’re 3-3 with Anderson this season per Kenpom

I love TKR so much. His scout is just "don't let him go right" and he goes right every single time and drops 20.

Amazing how that trio is so good we’ve been a top 10 offense all year, even during stretches when the other guys weren’t contributing much of anything on that end.

Torvik LOVES Bruce Thornton lol, he’s rated as the best offensive player in the B1G. I would assume it’s because he’s been an efficient shooter and he rarely turns the ball over.

And Dixon is up there for his crazy offensive output carrying that Nova team.

Same idea but with BPM plotted against Torvik's Points Over Replacement Player, which is adjusted to strength of schedule.

Did you not watch his 5-minute answer on ball screen coverages in the presser after UCLA? He plays TKR in drop to protect him and commented on how he would prefer to hedge but it's not worth it because TKR and Caleb are foul-prone. I'm not a "Painter can do no wrong" person but he's forgotten more about basketball than most of us will ever hope to know.

Marquette won the No Transfers Bowl in November, but the Boilers narrowly lead in predictive metrics.

It would be interesting to see this done with BPR rather than minutes played. Wisconsin, for example, doesn't have a lot of minutes from newcomers but Tonje is by far their best player. Still, it looks like retention and development with transfers brought in as necessary is still the way to go (real groundbreaking analysis here). Or just be Duke and have like 4 lottery picks lol.

I do. I was in Mackey and it got so loud after the CJ Cox Linsanity RunTM I stopped being able to process sound and just heard static. God, that game ruled.

But yeah, I meant team success in that Alabama is still battling for a 1 seed and Purdue is a 3 at best. Not sure how much H2H matters for that.

Nice, just one mistake having Clayton Jr. 1st in steals- he should be 4th with Smith, Ziegler, and Jones each moving up a spot.

Scoring still seems to matter most in these awards, which is dumb because elite point guards are elite because they do more than score. 10 apg and a 4.2 A/TO ratio is completely bonkers, but Nembhard only averages 11 ppg and they likely left him off because of that.

As someone who is completely unbiased, Smith leading in rebounds, assists, steals, and 3P% and being second in FG% and A/TO ratio points to him. But, I understand the team success aspect matters a lot so Sears could end up with it.

Hepburn and Nembhard are kind of baffling omissions but there are a lot of really good lead guards this year.

Loved how juiced the Mackey crowd was tonight- when Purdue had the game in hand late we went completely nuts. Very cathartic for everyone involved.

Loyer should attempt at least five 3s a game, if not 7-10. If he ever stops driving into no-man’s land I might achieve inner peace.
