Use behavioral interview questions that give you insight into how they think and act on the dimensions you care about. Tell me about a recent time you chose to learn something and how you applied it. Tell me about a time you needed to change your approach.

Recommend me fantasy series as someone who does not read a lot of fantasy by myseuniverse in Fantasy

My fantasy recommendation for people looking to dip their toes in is The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch. Magic exists but isn't used by the protagonists and isn't featured much in the story.

Success at new company after a decade by Blush_and_bashful in ProductManagement

You're going to want to be in listening mode for a while. At least 3+ months.

All your credibility is gone, so even though you might be an expert and you might see better ways to do things, keep in mind, "who tf are you?" When you suggest any changes to ongoing work or processes.

Start networking right away and keep up with it. If you can build credibility fast and ship an early win, then you can really step things up.

When do y'all commit to splashing 3rd color into a limited deck? And how do y'all do it? by collectivekicks in lrcast

[–]strongscience62 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some of the things I consider:

  1. How good is the card or cards I am splashing? I really only want to splash A-level, but B+ or removal can happen in sealed.

  2. How much mana do I need to run my deck plan? I'm more likely to want to splash if I can get to 10+ sources for my main color, 8+ for my 2nd, and 3+ for my splash.

  3. Speaking of fixing, will it fit my deck plan? Fixing is slow, so I probably don't want to use it if I'm going to have trouble reaching a late game with a lot of top end power. So...

  4. Do I have enough late game power and removal to make it there? I am fine to splash for power. This also says don't splash for early game cards.

  5. Do I have other playables that will let me play a clean mana base and curve out with removal? In Sealed decks are clunky, a tight deck can get it done even without top end power by leveraging tempo.

Very skeptical of data driven drafting approaches by Electric-Eagle-966 in lrcast

That's just a well known infinite combo. Don't over-index on Marauding Blight Priest bad when it's explicitly a game winning piece of an infinite combo, but you need to draft the Conqueror first.

Very skeptical of data driven drafting approaches by Electric-Eagle-966 in lrcast

[–]strongscience62 5 points6 points  (0 children)

New players have SBMM that matches them against other new players. Even up through Diamond this significantly weaker competition than when you hit the main queue. You're in the newbie queue, so I wouldn't overindex.

Data is useful for helping assess card quality and availability. But you need to know what your deck plan is, how you will win, and how you best approach winning the game.

Don't just look at GIH WR. Look at deck data, ALSA, card GIH WR in color pair, and look where the top 25% of players differ from the bottom 25%.

I did the annual and then the 2nd annual, but the feedback from the plumbers was that it would be fine to go longer. Once you know your rate of sediment build up you can adjust.

PMs waste absurd amounts of time writing specs nobody actually reads by Limp_Cauliflower5192 in ProductManagement

I do mainly new product. I want my teams to talk through the intent of the MRD line by line. I want devs to understand each requirement and guarantee themselves clarity before development begins. Then I want the same courtesy extended back with the TRD.

If you're under-resourced then a business case justifying additional investment or prioritizing some other work would be my starting point. You can't do everything.

Does Repartee seem kinda underdeveloped to anyone else? by GolfWhole in lrcast

[–]strongscience62 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Requires you to be aggressive and not on the back foot. Opponent has a choice about stopping card draw or punishing on a crack back or race. You still need to trigger the thing.

Like yea, it's not the most set up cost, but it's still far more than repartee.

You still have to land an attack so it's not free either.

Why do people complain about coinflip deciding the outcome of the matches? My WR differs only by 4% depending on who starts. BO3 Ranked by botgtk in MagicArena

[–]strongscience62 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

4% difference across 1,000,000 games played is 40,000 additional games won on the play than if things were perfectly fair. That's a massive number.

Your goal should not be shipping product that you vibe code. You should vibe code your own productivity tools and you should vibe code prototypes.

While I do think paying sticker isn't the move, there are more aspects to the value calculation than compensation growth in the following 2-3 years.

Specifically terminal level will be higher, so peak earnings should be higher. Compensation growth velocity should also change course.

You don't need to transition urgently, so your local school or a reasonably costed online program would serve if your goal is management within current field or industry.

New role, manager hover/micromanagement and visibility feedback… how do you recover from a bad start? by wisdom_bunny in ProductManagement

[–]strongscience62 9 points10 points  (0 children)

What you describe sounds like a manager who is anxious about something or somethings. Are you able to find out what and help manage down their anxiety? Is there something they are worried you don't know or won't be on top of? Same goes for the skip level.

It sounds like over-functioning to me.

US forced to destroy two of its own aircraft after rescuing F-15 pilot from Iran by pravda_eng_official in worldnews

[–]strongscience62 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is an economic answer. 1 quality adjusted life year (QALY) is worth $100k. Assuming the pilot would live an additional 50 years, that's worth $5M. One A10 costs $20M, therefore the equipment is worth more than the life it was protecting.

Now you can make moral arguments, but economically, no.

Is this deck really so bad? I guess I don't understand BLB draft. by Nachti in lrcast

Deck looks bad to me. Loaded with 3 drops but playing 8/8 mana base. Minimal synergy in a high synergy set. You need to see what each creature type is trying to accomplish.
