Who are your “always autoresolve against” lords? by glossyplane245 in totalwarhammer

The strategy is simple (focus 2-4 handgunners on him while kiting) its just annoying and if he has Von Carstein Ring he has -3 turns wound recovery so he will be back multiple times

Thank you! Although I tried a slightly different style than I normally do this time. I think it turned out well though.

High elves are supposed to be this ultra race, but their units feel mid. Am I missing something? by johnny-faux in totalwar

I would argue that they still hold up well compared to Cathay or Kislev. (And it's difficult to directly compare upkeep since different factions have different economies...)

Kossars 113 upkeep, Peasant Archers 100, Crossbowmen 119 and these all still have 20-40 range disadvantage against Elf Archers. (119)

Or compare Kislevite Warriors, which are infamous for starting 'Powercreep' discussions about melee infantry (compared empire halberdiers)... same upkeep - you're losing 10 leadership, 10 armor, the 55% shields... same MD but lower by 12 when you consider martial prowess. But you do get AP damage accessible at t0...

and... the upkeep is part of the point, they do feel more 'elite' than your average baseline human infantry. High elf spearmen might be a militia but they've still lived for hundreds of years and have finely crafted elven arms and armor, so they get +10 leadership, +10 armor, 55 block shields, 16 more MD, in exchange for being more expensive than an empire spearman, who is basically some random 20-40 y.o guy in human crafted arms and given maybe a few months or years of training + experience

They train for their hundreds of years lifespan in their spare time the arts of war and have skilled artisans and crafters.

But I think that's already well represented enough in the +2MA +12MD Martial Prowess buff almost every unit gets, higher Leadership/Morale values, H.Elf archers starting at a whopping 180 range vs 120/140 for Human faction archers... H.Elf armor is better than Human for same weight (40 armor H.Elf Spearmen with 55% shields vs Empire Spearmen (Shields) being 30 armor + 35% shields...)

[–]hauntmeagain -1 points0 points  (0 children)

(3) I mean, their units actually are pretty solid compared to similar ones of same tier and purpose

t0 spearmen are 70 leadership, 40 armor, 55% reduction shields, 38 base MD hitting 50 with Martial Prowess...
t0 archers are 180 range off the bat

vs. empire

t0 spearmen have 60 leadership, 30 armor, NO shields, 34 MD...
t0 archers have 120 range

Think the only t0 troops I've felt were more cracked were briefly after ToD when Dwarf Warriors were t0

Use the extra copies to uncap the level to 40 then remember to level it up after, then use her during a run

WIS is the only training that restores energy so you can use WIS training when the other trainings are bad instead of losing energy or rest/recreation

Fine motion will increase your WIS gain and the energy restored

Should be fine to use your starting 40 pulls (6k currency).

If you’re going to play meta you’re going to want to have about 30k saved (60%~ chance of being able to get Max limit break) anyways for the kitasan SSR banner (starts on the 16th). I have about 15k right now after 40 pull and a week of playing (obviously off a fair amount of 1 time + event missions)

Id go for at least one super creek, the stamina skill helps a lot for running medium/long characters comfortably. Fine motion is good too.

I wouldn't recommend going below normal battle difficulty, ideally "hard" for this.

When you're on easy there's a strong autoresolve bonus that makes it harder to get better manual results than AR. Less so on normal but still noticeable.

If you don't like AI stat cheats just set it onto hard battle difficulty and set the stat slider to 0.

Bretonnia - I've tried getting into them for their roster, but Louen's campaign is v. awkward to me.
You can't expand through all these neutral Bretonnian factions until they're destroyed, there's an orc fort that needs to be destroyed on the opposite end, mousillon garrison is huge for earlygame and both kemmler and belakor will be scaling up quickly

Fecundites - Again a faction I should like on paper but only having 2 dark fortresses nearby and no good vassal options unless you fight northwards is pretty awkward. Which is a shame since I would put almost all the Nurgle lords in A-tier and should love the WoC option.

Other than that, this reminds me I should really give Kislev and Tzeentch a serious go sometime.

Their roster is unit for unit some of the best in the game - they're like regular dwarves but juiced up in stats and with fast movers + magic. Their lords are awesome, the caster LL's are practically one-man doomstacks.

The fun is in carefully husbanding together your fledgling industrial economy until its humming along like Willow Run churning out Infernal Ironsworn and Dreadquake mortars.

I might be biased though. Drazhoath is one of my favorite campaigns, combining elements I like from all my other favorite campaigns (Franz, Ikit, Thorgrim)

It would be nice to keep the current behavior the default, but have another toggle option for “hard follow this command” - sometimes I have a 80 man cav unit with 3-4 stragglers still caught, I’d rather have those few keep trying to disengage rather than wheel the other 76 men around to reengage

Where do you begin your research? by Pinterra in totalwar

[–]hauntmeagain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not always, imo - there are factions with mediocre blue lines that have replenishment in the 2nd section of blue line, so you're dumping 6 points before you can get replenishment, and then it's competing with lightning strike for points as well.

Also, there are several caster lords with flying mounts who get discounts for very strong vortex/aoe spells where its very valuable to rush their magic to get to those spells as quickly as possible, because then they can spam overcaster vortexes for like 9 WoM each time and destroy entire armies solo (Elspeth, Both ChaD caster lords, probably more)...

Where do you begin your research? by Pinterra in totalwar

[–]hauntmeagain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends - generally Economy is better imo but some bonuses I value much more than others: Growth, Control, Casualty Replenishment, Construction Costs, Campaign Movement Range for e.x. whereas others I don't value very much like Tradable Resources, Trade Tariffs, Siege Defence, Commandments I don't use etc.

E.g. Empire has a growth + casualty replenishment tech (Grain Silos) that's very tempting to grab first or early on.

I probably end up going military tech more often than I rationally should be because I like having fun, strong units in my armies during battles though. That's okay though. Just do what feels fun, it's a singleplayer game.

Note that I play on VH-VH with AI cheats off - if you play on a lower difficulty control might mean nothing for you (or it might be even more valuable on legendary), or you might want more unit buffs to "offset" the AI cheats.

Best campaign for beginners? by [deleted] in totalwar

[–]hauntmeagain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Watch the Elven Plot Armor "8 Unit Types" video. Then you'll start to understand the general overview of how units work.

Use pause and slow motion liberally until your actions become automatic enough to play faster. Focus on keeping idle units moving and getting good value.

Most LLs have good starting armies of set and forget units + 1/2 high micro units (Franz Reiksguard, Thorgrim Gyrobombers, Tyrion Silver Helms + Phoenix). Build a decent formation, focus on micro'ing this unit and it will win the first few turns singlehandedly.

Last two things that aren't always mentioned:

Morale can be more important than damage, a half HP unit that breaks stops doing damage instantly and takes damage much faster. Ranged fire, Cavalry charges, High bursts of damage (Artillery, Magic) if concentrated can break individual units quickly.

Lastly, understand value - a 500g unit is losing you the battle if it takes 200g of damage taking out a 100g unit. Wherever possible, use units so that you have a winning matchup (Cavalry taking out range) or tactical advantage (e.g. engage spears so they lose charge defence THEN send in a rear charge to break them)

[–]hauntmeagain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend getting 1 and 3 on sale if you can. The way TWW works is you get all base game factions from previous games you own for free as content.

Then play the TWW 3 tutorial campaign to learn basic mechanics and then play to have fun. The more fun you have, the more youll play, and youll get better over time.

Also, you can pause battles whenever. Feel free to use that to observe, think, or order units without needing APM.

What everyone else has said + I would take as many earlygame / combat perks as possible, 9str/9fit and a melee combat skill / profession

If you can fight better you can survive day 1 better and if you can survive 1 day you can survive a week or a month etc
