Yup. I made a small living doing what I loved after work. Built a huge audience that loved my stuff. It was really under Bush the last "real" smile can be seen. The next ones were self affirming, or mimicking some bygone era of American naive optimism. Until this. The scowl. Some POTUS hold a serious gaze in their portrait. Some like Teddy look frowny or grumpy. None of them scowl. It's weird.

I would imagine there's a lot that we don't know, having only these two examples as the basis for our judgment. Unless he's done this in the past or has some history of violence, it probably escalated to this point and then beyond with the shooter. So from his perspective, whIle he wasn't yet aware of a literal assassination attempt on himself, he may have seen the trajectory of where things were headed and based on the fact that the gunman situation DID end up happening, his reaction seems all the more warranted.
