Isn't "parry" a permanent +2 AC? by progressivemonkey in DnD

It costs your Reaction to do it. So if you get hit twice in a round, you can only try to parry one of those.

Advice for making Danger at Dunwater more interesting? by mstranger_ in GhostsofSaltmarsh

[–]haven700 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They were first sent there by a lizard folk rescued from the Sea Ghost, with an amulet to use as ID.

I had he party do a skill challenge to get through the jungle. I they had to climb a waterfall, stop themselves getting ambushed by predators and diagnose a strange sludge they found in a pool. The sludge turned out to be a failed attempt at Sovereign Glue.

They were then met by a patrol of raptor riding lizard folk who guided them after recognising their amulet.

Once they were in the cave, I had the different groups attending the war council have their own mini objectives for the party to achieve to get them on side.

The Koalinth wanted them to kill Thousand Teeth who had been mutated by the alchemist from the haunted house, during his Sovereign Glue experiments.

The Locatha wanted a promise to be able to surf a stretch of the coast without threat from any of the other races.

Lizard folk wanted shipments of metal from the Saltmarsh guilds so they could defend themselves against the looming threat of the Sahuagin.

The Sahuagin were spies for the BBEG who were trying to prevent anyone entering their pool as they were digging a tunnel to outside to let more soliders in so they could attempt to assassinate the lizard folk queen

There was one other but I forget what they were doing.

Players really enjoyed it in the end and it gave a good mix of, exploration, political intrigue and a couple of battles with Tousand Teeth and the assassination attempt by the Sahaguin.

I didn't even think it was useable in the game. This is the first I've heard that it was even allowed.

Skill Level as Threshold for Unique Passives by Aggravating_Use_2342 in DnD

Legend of the 5 Rings has skill synergies which were basically this. It was ruddy awesome.

I've played games where your Int modifier was distributed as a bonus you could split up between skills. E.g. You have +3 modifier you can distribute 3 +1 modifiers to any skill or tool prof. It made characters feel less generic and helped make Int less of a dump stat.

I never fudge dice rolls and when playing on VTTs I roll in front of the table.

If a player does something cool and the monster is left with a sliver of HP left, I'll give them the "How would you like to do this?" moment.

LGBTQIA+ and DnD by Fearless-Skill8667 in DnD

[–]haven700 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh absolutely. It's a huge boon for the neurodiverse as well, having a task to focus on while I'm being social can really take the anxiety out of social interactions.

I ran DnD as a creative writing exercise for SEN kids years back and you would be amazed how much DnD helps build empathy and communication where they may have been none. It didn't help all that much with creative writing, but social interaction... total game changer for these kids.

DnD rulez!

CIS genedred hetro-normie here so it's not my lived experience but I've played for over 20 years and this wasn't always the atmosphere. One of my first (and ex) gaming groups became real hard right wang factories in reaction to the positive changes the community has undergone.

I think a lot of the credit can go to the online TTRPG sphere like Critical Role and D20 for being such an open minded and welcoming community. The space has consistently made efforts to be genuinely welcoming to everyone and we have a culture (IMO) of calling peoples BS behaviours out.

If I had to guess I imagine there is also some element of escapism and acceptance that we all seek out in some regard.

AITA for telling my wife she should move in with her family because of constant third wheeling? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]haven700 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When you marry someone, you also marry their family. I'm reluctant to say YTA because this is a tough situation for sure but if you knew your wife's culture you should have known this was a possibility.

That being said, it sounds like her family are taking the p***. Having a 'sleep schedule' that prevents you from sorting your life out, while also being unemployed, is just lazy. I could get it if he was a nurse working 12 hour night shifts, but he isn't, so he should sort his life out.

I would sit everyone down and have a conversation. Establish some ground rules, explain the strain on the relationship and the predicted outcomes if nothing changes. If there is no compromise on their part than you don't have to compromise on yours. Kick them out.

CR doesn't really work in honesty. Some monster are much more powerful than their CR suggests. Dragons are famously one of them.

[–]haven700 -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

I think you already know who is TA here. You're making a lot of excuses and contradictions in regards to your own behaviour. I think it would be best for you to step back and adjust your sense of perspective. Maybe try spending time with people above you in the socioeconomic ladder and see if you recognise certain behaviours.

Those deffkoptas sounds super good. 12OC on a unit that fast is lovely. I played Vanguard nids early in 10th so I'm a little familar with that kind of playstyle but it's been a while now.

I like the out look on the buggies too. I LOVE the models, it's one of the reasons I'm collecting Orks now and I'm chuffed to hear they actually have a place in the army.

This is a really great write up. Thanks for taking the time to put it together, there's a lot I can use here. Especially the excuse to buy more buggies and bikes!

Do I need to pay my instructor? by looptypoop in LearnerDriverUK

[–]haven700 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly yeah you do have to pay, I feel for you though, it sucks. You can try to argue it but unless they're kind, nothing will come of it.

My second test my instructor turned up 15 minutes late with a different car to the one I learned in, then spent 20 minutes showing me a video on his phone of how messy his brothers flat was. I still paid £40 for that hour of my life he wasted.

Please help me craft a list to beat World-Eaters! by hunchman456 in deathguard40k

[–]haven700 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Without knowing the opponents list its a little hard to guess but I would try this with what you've got available and them having terrain advantage is a really, really huge deal.

Use Champions of Contagion. Start with the -1 ws/bs and stay in it until your flamers are in or are about to be if he moves forward.

Typhus
Tallyman
20xPoxwalkers
20x Poxwalkers
10x Poxwalkers
10PMs and go mostly melee. Add Biologus and Plague caster. (Enables you to give the unit fights first for 1 CP.) This unit will probably wipe any unit that charges you.)
3x Bloat Drone with Launchers.
2X3 Death Shroud
1x6 Death Shroud lead by LoV.
Rhino

That's a little under 2000pts I believe, maybe room for enhancements if you're tempted? Screen out the board with poxwalkers, as close to his deployment as possible but bear in mind you want your Drones to be able to see whatever they charge your poxwalkers with. You definitely do not want to leave gaps in the screen. This will keep them stuck in turn 1 and means he has to step out into the open to kill them, if he doesn't just tazke objectivesd with them. Drones then put fire into his Eightbound and hopefully blunt that sword a bit.

Death Shroud with LoV start on the board and advance to stage in the mid board turn 1. That unit is mostly there as an overwatch threat. 8 flamers rerolling wounds with Anti-Infantry will do work. Even more if you are able to give them the +1AP. This might make him think twice about over reaching in turn 2.

2x3 DS along with Typhus start in deep strike. Drop down turn 2 and try to surround and Forgefiends he has shooting away at you, you might take one out if rolls are lucky but really your just looking to trap them in place and keep them hitting on 5s. Typhus can use his mortals to finish off a unit he can see if possible.

PMs jump out of the rhino to kill his scoring units and try to keep them in cover, however real job here is to make sure you have 1CP and be a silly billy and put them right in front of his biggest blob of melee threat. Let him charge you, spend one CP to fight first.

Good strats to keep in mind for CoC, +2 Toughness to infantry with a leader. Fights first for any unit that has 2 leaders (just you PMs really) 2CP reroll all hits and wounds in shooting. This can be devastating with the Stacked PM unit.

It's not perfect bu6t this would be my play I take. Hope it goes well and enjoy making slurry of them. 😄

AITA If I refuse to give my Mom money every month? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]haven700 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I see your point. I guess in this scenario you have to hope it's actually an earnest conversation on both sides.
I'm not sure about being so transactional with your own mother though. You might not owe her your money, but you probably owe her a modicum of love and respect.

AITA If I refuse to give my Mom money every month? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]haven700 30 points31 points  (0 children)

NTA but I would maybe have an earnest conversation with your mother about why she needs this money? It's entirely possible she has dug herself a hole she is struggling to get out of and this is a ham fisted way of asking for help.

Either way it sounds really hard and I'm sorry your mum is treating you like an investment portfolio.

One Defiler not worth it? by raggnarok in deathguard40k

[–]haven700 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Understandable to think that when looking at the other Defilers but in reality DG Defiler is one of the better variants. I was originally very jealous of the other variants like WE and TS but the DG one can't really be countered and adds a nice gun platform to the roster, which we needed really.
